Superintendent's Message Do you remember the song that advised in hauntingly sentimental lines, Whatever will be, will be? You may have made the mental note, Beautiful, but is it true? and then you answered your own question with, If it is true, it's both soothing syrup and retching poison . How right you are. But how popular this what’s-the-use-ism turns out to be! The soldier shows it when, between dying gasps, he says, That shell had my name on it. The racing driver lias the same idea when he predicts, I'll be around until my number comes up. ” And it’s the same with the sick man, re- covering from a one-in-ten chance, when he smiles through his pain, I guess my time isn’t just yet. It is a terrible thing, but we humans get comfort from imagining that we are trapped by the circumstances of life, forced to make choices that we never want to make, shunted off into situations that compromise or embarrass us, tricked and cheated by the world and its contents maneuvered into an unequal struggle with tragic misfortune. But are we right? Do we not control our own destiny? We must take the re- sponsibility of what we do, or do not do. Should our acts determine what we are. Whatever will be, will be is not the theme song for this school just as it is not for the individual members of it. To the first grade we say Welcome. To the seniors we say good-bye and ask Did this school really do the very best for you and Did you really try to take advantage of your opportunity? Your Superintendent, Thomas W. Hill It seems like every year passes a little faster than the last one. This 1967- 68 school year has not been an exception. I would like to think that we have im- parted at least a small amount of meaningful, useful, knowledge to you students during this past year. If we have accomplished this, then we can look back on this as a successful year. To the graduating seniors, I hope we have given you the necessary tools to go on in your chosen areas and become successful. We who remain here at Bayfield High School, would like to thank you for what you have given us over the past four years. Tom James Principal Memories brought back by an annual are treasured ones of old friends, games won and lost, your first formal dance, your date with a dream for the prom, that test you worked so hard to pass, the time in chemistry you made hydrogen sulfide gas and stunk up the whole building, and hundreds of other things having a certain fondness in the recollection. May it ever be thus and may this annual be thus to you. In years to come may the memories you recall when thumbing through its pages be pleasant ones which bring a lump to your throat and stars to your eyes. E. Duane Workman 3
