VO On Oc VO We the Wolverine Staff of 1967-1968 would like to dedicate this annual to Arleta Phillips daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Phillips; Born Nov. 22, 1949. Passed away August 12, 1967. 2 Superintendent's Message Do you remember the song that advised in hauntingly sentimental lines, Whatever will be, will be? You may have made the mental note, Beautiful, but is it true? and then you answered your own question with, If it is true, it's both soothing syrup and retching poison . How right you are. But how popular this what’s-the-use-ism turns out to be! The soldier shows it when, between dying gasps, he says, That shell had my name on it. The racing driver lias the same idea when he predicts, I'll be around until my number comes up. ” And it’s the same with the sick man, re- covering from a one-in-ten chance, when he smiles through his pain, I guess my time isn’t just yet. It is a terrible thing, but we humans get comfort from imagining that we are trapped by the circumstances of life, forced to make choices that we never want to make, shunted off into situations that compromise or embarrass us, tricked and cheated by the world and its contents maneuvered into an unequal struggle with tragic misfortune. But are we right? Do we not control our own destiny? We must take the re- sponsibility of what we do, or do not do. Should our acts determine what we are. Whatever will be, will be is not the theme song for this school just as it is not for the individual members of it. To the first grade we say Welcome. To the seniors we say good-bye and ask Did this school really do the very best for you and Did you really try to take advantage of your opportunity? Your Superintendent, Thomas W. Hill It seems like every year passes a little faster than the last one. This 1967- 68 school year has not been an exception. I would like to think that we have im- parted at least a small amount of meaningful, useful, knowledge to you students during this past year. If we have accomplished this, then we can look back on this as a successful year. To the graduating seniors, I hope we have given you the necessary tools to go on in your chosen areas and become successful. We who remain here at Bayfield High School, would like to thank you for what you have given us over the past four years. Tom James Principal Memories brought back by an annual are treasured ones of old friends, games won and lost, your first formal dance, your date with a dream for the prom, that test you worked so hard to pass, the time in chemistry you made hydrogen sulfide gas and stunk up the whole building, and hundreds of other things having a certain fondness in the recollection. May it ever be thus and may this annual be thus to you. In years to come may the memories you recall when thumbing through its pages be pleasant ones which bring a lump to your throat and stars to your eyes. E. Duane Workman 3 Office Girls: V. Kimball, V. Our classroom was the Presbyterian church annex. Of the beginning class six are still here to graduate. They are: Marie Cundiff, Beverly Beaver, Steve Ancell, Jerry Abernathy, Joe Dee Fahrion and Lorna Wommer. We managed to survive the first grade and pass on to the second and Mrs. Cockreham. We felt very impor- tant to be moving into the old yellow schoolhouse like regular students. Those of the class of '68 who joined us this second year were Bill Stagleman, Ross Gosney and June Box. One of the things we remember about the third grade with Mrs. Ostwald is the fact that if we didn't know our multiplication tables we couldn't go to Music. Our fourth grade year was spent with Mrs. Caldwell. We had a swingin’ end of the year party with Mrs. Caldwell taking us to her ranch for a mountain climbing outing and picnic after. Dona Frost and Sharon Rather joined us in the fifth grade. Mrs. Pinckert was our keeper. We entered into the world of business by having a school supplies store in our room. Sixth grade was great. We were so grown up-changing classes-different teachers. We had an all day end of the year picnic at June Box's. During the seventh grade we remember the hay ride given by the 8th grade with Mr. Wyant taking us on a hay ride from Bayfield to the Dam with a weiner roast at the Dam. On Jr. Play Day we presented the play Cleanest Town In The West . Diane Bush came to us during our 8th year. We placed in the Homecoming float contest. We presented the play Getting Grade Graduated , with Lorna Wommer as Gracie. We all felt so very grown up and impor- tant at Graduation. Afterwards we had a Pizza Party and dance at Lorna Wommers. Our Freshman year brought us Donna Wade and Freshman initiation. We were over being such big wheels and being in High School, maybe even a little scared. Ross and Raymond were on the A basketball team and we took consolation at Denver. As Sophomores we gained Vickie Parks. We didn't feel as out of place this year. Ross and Raymond were on the A basketball team and we were real proud of them. They were runners up for state champs. Our Junior year Dora and Florinda Lucero and Charlie Staley came to us. We were grieved by the loss of Raymond Lucero and Arleta Phillips. We had a lot of fun preparing and giving the Prom. We had for our theme In The Misty Moonlight . Ross and Steve were on the A basketball team that took us to Denver. They came so close to winning it almost made us cry. Also this year four of our boys, Jerry Abernathy, Steve Ancell, Bill Stagleman, and Ross Gosney played on the football team that won the State Quarterfinals. Our Senior year we were proud to win a free day from school by selling the most tickets for the Carnival. The P. E. class of '68 consisting of Seniors: Donna Wade, Dona Frost, Janie Richardson, Judy Mankins, Marie Cundiff, Pat Campbell, Florinda and Dora Lucero honored Bayfield by defeating Durango and Farm- ington at Basketball and winning the trophy offered at the San Juan Basin Play Day. New Students are Tom Dodd, Janie Richardson, Pat Campbell, Darwyn McBride and Don Hill. 14 13 CLASSES 1ST ROW V. Amon D. Archuleta D. Atkinson L. Bassett D. Baxter B. Buckner 2ND ROW S. Burch E.
