•.V;V;: iC% r- i •V isn 1959 WOLVERINE BAYFIELD HIGH SCHOOL BAYFIELD, COLORADO We dedicate this book to the future students of B. H. S. who will roam these halls and gamer their learning in this, OUR NEW BUILDING, with the hopes that it will mean to them what old B.H.S. building has meant to us. SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE This annual is a pictorial story of another year of school. For the seniors, it is their last year in the public school system. I sincerely hope that they can look back to twelve years of mental and emotional as well as physical growth. Forall others, I hope that this annualis a reminder that twelve years is a very short time in which to prepare for a career or college and to use the coming years to better advantage. In your adult years you will be able to scan through your annuals with remem- brances of good times, participation in activities and sports, good friends, favorite teachers (and those not so favorite), but most of all I hope that it will be a reminder of the knowledge you gained not of the opportunities you may have lost. BOTTOM ROW -JetuC., NinaP., Kay W., Donna T., Wylena H., Jerolene P., Leroy W. HISTORY We, members of the Senior Class, entered the first grade in the memorable fall of 1947. Mrs. Caldwell taught most of us our ABC's and how to sit still. Al- though it was tough, most of us made it on to the second grade. By that time we were pretty well acquainted. Mrs. Mohney started the school year with us only to turn it over to Miss Green for the rest of the term. Marvin Lewis, Emma Edwards, Billy Carpenter, and Arlene Harris joined the gang that year. Our third grade year, with Miss Lucas and Mrs. Falican as teachers - we will all remember. There was lots to learn that year, poems, and even jokes. As that was the year the rural schools consolidated, we had a few more join the troop - Judy Gil- bert, Alden Naranjo, Doris Blackmore, Gerald Ludwig, Katherine Stahl, Bonnie Cundiff, and Lucille Cundiff. Leroy Webber and Everett Burch left us. The business of learning, was old stuff after promotion into the fourth grade. Mrs. Kelley sat behind the teacher's desk to start us out in our geography and science lessons. Everyone felt quite important that year. We contributed to the fish pond at the school carnival, and were permitted to attend the home football games. Barbara Norman from Amarillo, Texas, and Barbara Stephens from Denver en- tered. Barbara Stephens also left that year. Our fifth grade wasn’t much different from our fourth grade. We had the same teacher and dug a little deeper into the subjects. Georga Russell from Ignacio and Tony Mascarenas were our only new entries in the class that year. Nina Powell left. Entering our sixth grade, the first year of junior high, we were old veterans of this thing they call learning. Mrs. Parks was to give us our instructions that year. History was really flung at us, but we made it through in spite of it. We lost two members and gained two that year. Katherine Stahl left us, and Bobby Lindly from Durango joined us and left again after a few weeks. Kathryne Hayes from Carlsbad, New Mexico, obtained membership. To be able to say we were seventh graders sounded pretty good to us. We learned quite a bit about the Hopi Indians, and even had our teacher, Mrs. Jenkins, show us how to carve Ka China dolls. We acquired a terrarium and different members of the class contributed to it. A few brought water snakes which got loose in the room and were never found. We had a salamander for whom we gathered snails regularly every morning. A few boys also learned that going on STRIKE only meant long division problems for punishment. Our class welcomed four new members - Vicki Gilmore, Tommy Evans, and Wilfred Martinez, only to lose all three soon. Gary Forsythe evidently felt he was tough enough to stay with us. The eighth and last year of grade school saw us looking up to Mrs. Crowell as teacher. Nina Powell returned, and the class became acquainted with Stella Mar- quez, from Denver, and Johnny Salazar. Our enrollment increased that year with the Moss school children coming to Bayfield. Jerry Bowers and Drue Dye came, along with Jack and Jerry Haga, whom everyone was always calling the wrong name. Our graduation at Mesa Verde was the highlight of the year. All but one attended, and everyone truly enjoyed himself. Enjoyment was laid aside now as the entering freshmen endured initiation. The moon was bright that night, but most of us saw more stars, whipped green sour cream, and vinegar than we did moonlight. We were served with great delicacies such as punch ( ?) and raw egg sandwiches. Our rolling stomachs were soothed by a high school hop in our honor. Class parties were enjoyed by all that year, thanks to some of the mothers of the members. We celebrated the last day of school by having a horseback ride. Entering with us on our new orail in high school life, were Marvin Arnold, Bonnie Luke, Phyllis Heffington and Alvina Box. Four, who finished the eighth grade with us, but did not enter the ninth, were Stella Marquez, Drue Dye, Jetta Cooper, and Wilfred Martinez. As sophomores, we had the pleasure of welcoming the freshmen into high school. Our initiation helped let off a little steam that had been accumulating during the past year. To help our financial situation, Mrs. Hopkins, our sponsor for the second year, helped us pick movies to have every other Friday. There were a few class parties during the year, and a horseback ride on the last day of school. We were to gain two new class members, Kenneth Vaughan from Rifle, and Georgia Duncan from Norwood. Everett Burch returned from Ignacio after being gone for a few years. Phyllis Heffing- ton left us to go to Texas. There was much to look forward to our junior year - choosing our rings, and our play - Custers' Last Stand. We sponsored the Christmas dance, a great success. The Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom was given with Paradise of the Deep as the theme. Bob Wegher's band played. Richard Evans from San Gabriel, California, joined us and two old classmates returned, Alvina Box and Phyllis Heffington. Emma Edwards and Jerolene Percell, two long time classmates, left. Again, Mrs. Hopkins directed us through the perilous moments. Our senior and last year for many of us is really the year we'll remember. Johnny Salazar and Georgia Duncan left us and we added three more new members, Ron Luttig from Lewisville, Nebraska, and Catherine Cundiff from Pagosa Springs, and Jerolene Percell from Durango. The number is now standing at twenty-nine, the largest graduating class B. H. S. has had, and we are eagerly looking forward to receiving diplomas. Twelve who started together will finish together. They are Everett Burch, Paul Davenport, Dan Gosney, Donald Grush, Keith James, fred Kesselring, Martin Mor- rison, Adrian Murray, Larry Mullen, Jerolene Percell, Nina Powell, and Lonne Sower. Looking into the future, we have our dance to sponsor, our play to choose, our trip to plan, (ready Mr. Ferrick?), and most outstanding of all, our graduation to attend. We hope that those who follow us through the halls of B. H.S. will find their Moments To Remember as pleasant as those of the class of '59. . Everybody had to go to the hospital before the reunion to visit KENNETH VAUGHAN, where he is recovering from a sprained thumb which he received while defending his world championship in Tiddly Winks against the leading contender, GARY FORSYTHE. His nurse has been his old classmate, DORIS BLACKMORE, and his doctor is LONNE SOWER, who is a sprained thumb specialist. JUDY GILBERT and BARBARA NORMAN, two of the country's top singers, . will sing their newest hit, which their manager says will be their biggest hit yet. LARRY MULLEN, now a big Texas sheepman, while flying to Bayfield, read In the paper that his stewardess, JEROLENE PERCELL, gave him, that KEITH JAMES had lost in the race for Senator for the third straight time. His campaign manager, PAUL DAVENPORT, cannot see why KEITH only gets three votes each election. JACK and JERRY HAGA, DAN GOSNEY, and JERRY BOWERS were recently rescued from the Pacific Ocean, where they lit after their fifth unsuccessful try to he the first men on the moon. They were rescued by DONALD GRUSH, the new Commander of the Coast Guard. The three CUNDIFFS, BONNIE. LUCILLE, and CATHERINE, drove up in their three Cadillacs from their ranch in Mexico, The Rancho El Cundiff. The food for the party was donated by FRED KESSELRING, who recently purchased the Bayfield Locker Plant with back pay. The food was delivered by his number one delivery boy, MARTIN MORRISON. KATHRYNE HAYES and GEORGIA DUNCAN, the new janitors at B.H.S. have signed a contract to clean up the gym after the reunion. ADRIAN MURRAY recently took over his Uncle Arthur's TV Dancing Show. One of his dancing teachers is another B.H.S. graduate, ALVINA BOX. Patrolman EVERETT BURCH and hotrodder NINA POWELL were late because Judge RON LUTTIG had summoned them to court for dragging on Main Street. RICHARD EVANS, PHYLLIS HEFFINGTON, and GERALD LUDWIG Hew in from Hawaii where their oil company finally struck something; but it was only a false alarm, because it was only the Pacific Ocean. All in all, a good time was had by everyone and another reunion was planned in ten years. JUNIORS Bill Newton Earlena Cramer Janice Luttig, Paul Evans.
