Presented By Bayfield High School Bayfield, Colorado SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE These young people are our nation's most valuable resource. Issuch a resource to be exploited for selfish reasons, or is it to be developed for the betterment of all mankind? It is the responsibility of the citizens in every community to provide adequate education for their youth to meet the problems of tomorrow as well as those of today, and it is questionable whether this community, or this country will continue to exist without the optimum of educational means. In September, 1945, three months after the close of World War II, we, the seniors of 1957, started up the ladder of learning. There were nineteen of us, twelve boys and seven girls, under the kind and guiding hand of Miss Eidson. Of those original nineteen members, three still remain in the class, Marie Morrison, Gary Amon, and Elmer Powell. After having passed the first rung on the ladder and becoming second graders, we continued on in the quest of knowledge. With Mrs. Mohney leading the attack, the year passed quickly and we became seasoned veterans in addition and subtraction, reading, and other intellectual pastimes. (Art?) George Cooper entered in March. Promotion into the third grade left two rungs behind us. Mrs. Folsom took over in this portion of our climb, and guided us into the realms of long and short division. Sandra McVicker joined the ranks. By the fourth grade, this business of learning had become old stuff. Mrs. Ostwald stood be- fore us that year, giving us our first glimpses at geography and science. The fifth grade and there were four rungs below us on the ladder. Now we were really getting somewhere. Miss Largent was our teacher and gave us our first good taste of English grammar. Among many other entrants that year we gained three regulars, La Vina Wommer, Millard and Gene Gilbert, After steaming through the fifth grade with flying colors, we sailed on into the sixth grade. With Mrs. Smith at the helm we explored the mysteries of strange and unknown decimals and fractions. We also gained another regular crewman, Bette Graves. Mrs. Smith, remained with us, through the seventh grade. Dorothy Frost and Sam Hickman joined the pack. Mrs. Crowell took over when we reached the eighth rung on the ladder. A little algebra and quite a lot of science gave us a taste of what high school was going to be like. Ted McKinnis entered. In September, 1953, we took the long step from grade school to high school Initiation toughened us to the routine and we really began to enjoy it. Mrs. Short, also in her first year at Bayfield High School, was our sponsor. As sophomores, we had the responsibility of initiating the freshmen and many grudges held from the previous year’s initiation were settled. Parties were the extent of our class sponsored activities. Shirley Thompson and Wyoma Randall entered. The Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom and Prom and the Junior Play were highlights of our junior year. A Hawaiian theme was used at the banquet and Jack Norris’s band played for the prom. Our play was entitled, You’re Only Young Once.’’ We also sponsored two dances, the Thanksgiving Dance and the Valentine’s Dance. Both Mrs. Short and Mr. Starbuck were class sponsors. Tiodorita Lucero became a class member. We are now on the twelfth rung on the ladder. It will be the last for many of us, while others will venture farther up the ladder. We have sponsored two dances this year, Thanksgiving and New Years, and still have to give our play. Our final fling will be the sneak sometime in April. Graduation will be the ninth of May. Steve Law and Mice Groves entered this year. They bring our final number to seventeen. PROPHECY Dear Les, I thought you might be interested to know what happened to the Senior Class that we sponsored in 1957. Do you remember what a beautifulvoiceShirley Thompson had? She has surely put it to good use. She is now a night club singer at Harold’s Club in Reno, Nevada. I went to the fights the other night at the Bayfield Stadium. Out into the ring stepped a familiar face. (In a moment the body followed.) It was Ted McKinnis now known as Jack Dempsey H. George Cooper, head Chemist of the Bayfield Chemical Laboratory, and his assistant, Marie Morrison, had dinner with me the other night. Marie had stars in her eyes but all George had was chemicals. Gene Gilbert and Elmer Powell made the first trip to Mars in a space ship that Millard Gilbert constructed in his spare time. Being prospectors and bachelors they, of course, did a little prospecting. They brought back some lovely specimens of red gold. They plan to make a return trip as soon as the class reunion is over. Now a little more about Millard. He is one of the greatest jet mechanics that has ever been known. As in the old days he goes at it slow and lazy but as usual everything comes out perfect. Two people have taken leave of these wonderful United States; Steve Law went back to his old homeland, Alaska. Wonder of all wonders. Do you know what the boy did? He built a bridge across Bering Strait that will provide an intra-continental highway. Sam Hickman is ambassador to the deepest, darkest, Africa.1 heard he is married toa lovely little head hunter. Just guess who has your old job? Sandra McVicker!!! She teaches commercial subjects in Bayfield High SchooL You should see the admiring glances she gets from those young sprouts. Wyoma (Randall) Richards and Tiodorita (Ulibarri) Lucero were happily raising their own little families, when suddenly they decided they liked children so well they now are running a nursery in Silvertoa They have around 100 children in their little home. We even have a preacher in our midst. Jim Thomas is preaching in the Bayfield Church. I have been to services there and he preaches quite well. La Vina Wommer finally got her rich cattleman. He was originally from Texas but moved up and took over the Wommer Estate. They have a private plane besides 3 or 4 cars. She is still the same old LaVina though. Goes out and rides a horse from morning till night and comes in looking like a bum. Dorothy Frost also lives on a cattle ranch. She is queen of the King Ranch. She owns so many thoroughbreds that she told me even she doesn’t know the number. Her husband. King of the King Ranch, is Gary Amon. They havequite a large ranch so Gary made him a private drag strip. He is helping to cure the juvenile delinquency, you know, by keeping the teen-agers off the high- ways. Betty Graves really made a name for herself during the last war. World War m She became famous as a surgeon. She joined the Wacs and spent her time in the Pacific Islands curing the soldiers of lovesickness and radiation poisoning. Alice Groves is now chief of the Southern Ute Nation. She is the first woman chief. She just returned as a representative of the Utes to the President. Well, Les, that is all the Seniors so guess I had better close. We will be happy to see you at the class reunion in May, 1967, a little over three months from now. Yours truly. Sybil Short WILLS try v (Gary'trmon) (Gene Gilbert) (Bette Graves) I.
