THE YEAR IN REVIEW School began September 12th with Mr. Harold McColum as superintendent. He also teaches Speech and presides over the Order of the Wooden Horse. Mr. Hilton, our coach, teaches com- mercial subjects and sponsors the Senior class. Languages are taught by Mrs. Peterson, who sponsors the pep club. From Durango came our Math, Chemistry, and History teacher, Mr. Evans. He keeps his eye on the Sophomores. Mrs. Jenkins teaches every afternoon, and sponsors the Freshmen. Last but not least, Mr. McTaggart. He teaches music to all grades and sponsors the Juniors. He came to us from Texas where he taught last year. Grade school teachers, from the first through the eighth are: Mrs. Holgate, Mrs. Crowell, Mrs. Falicon, Mrs. Kelly, Miss Largent, Mrs. Beuten, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Morris. Miss Lucas resigned as third-grade teacher and the grade was taken over by Mrs. Falicon, who came from Colorado Springs. The first social affair of the school was Freshman Initiation. After that they were officially recognized as High School students. The annual Carnival was a hit. We net about $200. There was everything in the way of entertainment, even a movie with the school’s new motion picture projector. Our classes have been broadened by pictures which go right along with them. Next came our pre-season Basketball Tourney. There were only four teams entered: Pagosa, Utes, Ignacio, and Bayfield. The Champs were the Pagosa Buccaneers, a prophecy for the year. Although we had our school buses all year, we went to Silverton for our first basketball trip. Incidentally, Silverton beat us, but the trip was worth it, after all. The bus drivers are Phil Sapp, Ivan Parks, and Jimmie Frahm. We gave a Christmas Music Festival on Dec. 21. There was chorus music from all grades and a Christmas carol sung by every grade. Everyone in High School Music classes seems very enthusiastic about it. School took up on January 3rd after Christmas vacation. The highlight of that occasion was Mr. McColum’s mustache. Immediately after that every boy in High School appeared with a mustache. Guess they didn’t fertilize them enough, because theirs soon disappeared. The date set for the Junior play was Friday, January 13th. The play was postponed in remem- brance of Wayne Smith, who died January 12th. Since he had a leading part in the play, it made finding another actor to fit his part necessary. The play, “The Phantom Bells,” was given January 18th with a record attendance crowd. Our school was closed for two weeks because of polio. This really was necessary because Mr. Hilton and Mr. McColum were under quarantine and there was such a polio scare at the time. Mary Ann Murray took polio, and no one knew how many of her classmates she had exposed to the polio bug. Directly following vacation, the student council went to work on putting out our annual. It is hoped that school and the annual will be out about the same time. At the Durango Basketball Tournament, Bayfield made a good showing but was eliminated after their first two games. They played Silverton and Mancos, both of which were good games. Silverton took the Championship after fighting for her life with Pagosa. Here at home we had our own Inner-class Tourney. In the boys’ teams the Seniors proved winners over the Freshmen, the Sophomores taking the Juniors. The girls entered the Tournament with the Rag Mop (Juniors) versus the Wild Geese (Freshmen). The Junior girls took the Cham- pionship and the Senior boys defeated the Sophomores after a close battle for the Championship title. We have yet to look forward to a Spring Music Festival which is scheduled for April 7th. About a week later is the Fine Arts Festival in IXirango. Many of the music students have practiced solos and duets and the boys and girls choruses have their numbers almost ready. The Seniors have begun practice on their play, “The Elusive Bachelor,” which they will give in April. The play cast includes every Senior. Also, away off in the dim future is the Junior-Senior Prom. The Juniors plan to stage a nice banquet with the money earned from the play. And then comes the day we are all looking forward to, Graduation Day. The Seniors will graduate (they hope), school will be out, and another three months of vacation will begin.
