The Tigers put a pass rush on the Yutan quarterback in the Coach Begley and Coach Lentz listen in awe of the ref's first round of state playoffs, call. Jamie Yakel throws a pass during the state playoff game against Yutan. The 1984 football season ended with an 8-3 record with losses to Grant, a C-2 team, a loss to Kimball, a class B team, and a loss to Valley. The Bayard squad outscored their opponents 226-159. The Tigers had 131 first downs compared to their opponents' 101 first downs. The Tigers compiled a total of 1780 yards rushing for the season, outrushing their opponents who had 1391 yards. The first round of the C-l state playoffs opened with the Bayard Tigers against the Yutan Chicftans. On Octo ber 31, the Tigers showed their determination as they defeated Yutan in front of a home town crowd by a score of 27-14. This win advanced the Tigers to the second round of the playoffs at Valley. This was a game controlled by turnovers. The Tigers went into the lockerrooms at halftime with a 14 to 7 lead but could not hold on as the final gun had Valley ahead by a score of 20 to 14. Coach Begley commented the 1984 football season was very enjoyable as we watched a young team mature. Led by an excellent senior class, many team and personal goals were met. This is the second year of the PAC 11 conference, and Bayard has yet to lose a conference game. The 8-3 season produced many exciting moments throughout the season. This was my most satisfying season in coaching because we reached down deep for every possible ounce of determination to make this a super season. 38 Gridders End Season 8-3 Tigers are watching from the sidelines waiting to go in as Coach Brandt gives instructions. A couple of the ups were wiping out Morrill in their season opener and beating Oshkosh for the first time since the seniors were 7th graders. One of the big downs was losing Coach Wallace for part of the season. His heart attack had a great emotional effect on him, the team and assistant coach Langhofer. Coach Langly took over the team and led them through a good deal of the season. Coach Wallace was back in time only to suffer a very disappointing regular season loss to Bayard's arch rival Bridgeport. They also were crushed by Oshkosh in the N.P.V. tournament to take fourth. The District tournament brought more than disappointment to many of the Lady Tigers. The girls went into the tournament with high, expectant hopes, only to get them washed away by Bridgeport in the first round. The loss not only ended the season for the team, but it ended high school volleyball careers for four members of the team. Four seniors leave Bayard High. From there they beat two good teams at state and made a appearance in the finals, but lost its first and only game to Arlington and finished runner-up. Jamie Yakel made first team in the State tournament class C selections with Rich McDaniel and Kyle Kiesel making Honorable mention. The three were also regional selections by the Star-Herald with Jamie making first team. Coming back to Bayard, State Runner up for a second year in a row, the Tigers really have something to be proud of. The State Tournament will be a memory that will not easily be erased. Now you've reached the highest mark And looking back to the very start There are so many Remember Whens That were made with special friends. Remember when, your freshman year. There was that dash of first day fear. Looking forward to setting goals. Preparing yourself for your high school roles. Establishing yourself as someone who could While keeping your mouth shut as freshmen should. Not daring to question, argue, or pry But going through life without asking why. Developing character along with your friends. This is the start of some of your favorite Remember Whens. Your sophomore year, remember when. The class of 85's hard work really began. One step higher, with one year behind. The goals of Varsity were set in your mind. Dreams were beginning to shape and to mold. Believing in yourself and trying to catch hold. All settled in and accustomed to the load. Trying to adjust to life's rocky road. This is a part of the many Remember Whens' That weie made with special friends. Experience in sports was coming of age. Making it difficult for opponents to gage. How long it would take for B.H.S. to fall. Never realizing you always gave your all. Displaying class for all to see. Setting an example of true quality. Becoming leaders in your own special w,ay. Growing in poise with each passing day. This is a part of the many ' Remember Whens That were made with special friends. Remember when, at graduation last year. You began to see that your own special day was drawing near. And now it appears, believe it or not, The days between surely aren't a lot. Looking back, the memories are there. Most are so vivid you can still remember where, The most embarrassing event that happened in your life, Really wasn't consisted of too terribly much strife. The time has come for Remember Whens to be made with some very special friends. Now it's the time to look ahead. For signs of fortune to be read. Yesterday is gone and tomorrow is here. And there is a place for a new kind of fear. May you hold your heads high with whatever you do. The class of 86 is proud of you. Do lecall the Remember Whens And always remember the very special friends. Remember when, your junior year. The class of 86 was inflicting fear. Michelle Rose I
