Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1962 volume:

presented by The Senior Class Bayard High School Bayard, Nebraska I “Along the Oregon Trail” is the story of the BHS 1961-62 annual. Do you remember . .. when band practice disturbed the early morning silence of BHS with “Sweet Adeline Rock” or “Hello. My Baby?” the clamor of feet beginning another school day? 2 TO THE CLASS OF 1962: Congratulations to the class of ’62 for your successful completion of your four years of high school; to your sponsor, Miss Eloise Schwab; to the annual staff; and your class sponsors. I would wish that each of you discipline himself to be reverent, obedient, ambitious, truthful, punctual, and enthusiastic in all your activities. My ambition in life is: to inspire youth to do their best; to counsel and guide them toward worthwhile goals; to encourage them to continue their education; to trust them and to realize they will carry on where we leave off. Your successful future is based on these qualities. Your friend, S. V. CHASE, Superintendent The Administration Speaks TO THE CLASS OF 1962: “All ivho have meditated on the governing of mankind have been convinced that the fate of empires depends on the education of youth.” ARISTOTLE Let us hope that the years of public school education have brought to each of you a better understanding of your responsibilities, and the desire to bravely assume them. In addition to the subject matter taught each one has had the opportunity to learn to adapt and adjust to change. It is my sincere hope that I may have in some way contributed to your future success and have aided you in acquiring the ability to keep abreast with the ever increasing pace of world affairs. ECHO—“You were much too harsh, much too harsh!” The girl is insane!” One-Acts Create Suspense The Running Tide, Mooncalf Mugford, and Echo, were the names of the one-act plays presented this year by the dramatic department. The productions were filled with dramatic suspense which captured the audience’s imagination during the entire performance. Mooncalf Mugford was chosen as the outstanding play to compete in the district speech contest on March 22 at Sidney. MOONCALF MUGFORD—“Can't you see them spirits? Them little green spirits standing by the sea chest over in the comer?” “tAumbo Jumbo” Presented The Junior Class play was a hilarious mystery farce called “Mumbo Jumbo.” The story took place in a New England home which was built on the county line. After several deaths, much confusion, and many laughs, the plot was revealed, the murderers were captured, and the play ended with a bang. The play held record attendance for any production given at the school and was enjoyed by everyone who witnessed the action. The sight of a dead Chorus girl is too much for Tweety and Mrs. Custer. The Bridgeport, Mitchell, and NPV meets all proved to be quite exciting when the Bayard tracksters displayed their skills. Outstanding members of the team were Eddie Contreras who broke a thirty-two year record with a time of 56.4 in the 440 yard run and Keith Frakes who broke Bayard’s shot put record. All the boys showed great determination in making their team the best their coach had ever seen. Boosting the boys on through an undefeated football season, a successful basketball season, and an outstanding track season were the five Jr. Hi cheerleaders. After much practice, the girls dressed in blue and white, cheered the boys to victory. Lelt to Right: B. Amend, J. Morris, C. Wimmer, P. O’Neal, S. Schmall. The recent installment of math facilities has proven useful for both Jr. High and High School scholars. Students writing research papers have found the modern material in the library helpful in their search for knowledge. I wonder what the name of that book is! And it’s so easy to use for giving tests. I wonder how many will flunk this time? Just think, we get to eat it too! Does it polish fingernails too? Block Schedule Adds Zest to Jr. High Classes New advancements in schedules, desks, and academics have been introduced in the Jr. High during the past school year. The block system integrated the study of English, social studies, spelling, and mathematics. The modern desks have contributed to better study conditions, and the new classes of home-ec. and shop added variety and interest to the regular curriculum. Now, if you draw it right, it should work! Is it always that difficult? JUNIOR HIGH The windmill pumped water from its source to areas where moisture wras vitally needed by the settlers; furthermore. To You We Dedicate This Book 0 0 0 Mr. Stine and Mrs. Bowden were the Class Sponsors during our junior and senior years, and Mr. and Mrs. “Speed” George were the Class Parents. We, the members of the Senior Class, confided in these people and were never rebuked; needed kindness and always received; and asked for aid and were given their time. We can never show the love to you that you have given us. May this dedication be a token of our extreme gratitude to you for giving so freely of your time, your talent, and yourselves during two extremely difficult years of our youth. A Night in “Blue Hawaii” A tropical evening was enjoyed by the juniors, seniors, faculty, and their guests in a setting of “Blue Hawaii,” the theme of the 1962 Junior-Senior Prom. A banquet, planned on a Hawaiian theme was highlighted by the playing of the trumpet trio. Toastmaster, Bob Kniss, introduced speakers, Mark Rogers, Jay Belden, Jama-lee George, Sharon Kaiser, and Superintendent Mr. Chase. Following the Banquet, the hosts and their guests began dancing among palm trees, volcanoes, and against a background of a Hawaiian mural. Everyone who attended enjoyed a very unusual evening. 78 Songs sung by the trio added to the Prom festivities. Servers present all guests leis. Against a background of Hawaii, the Hi-Tones provide dancers with Hawaiian music. Harriett and Isidro jitter-bug under the palm leaves. Class Night — The Greatest Colossal in the History of BHS On May 22 a record crowd filled the High School auditorium to watch a TV spectacular, “The Don Stine Show.” The evening was marked with entertainment and was followed by one of the greatest presentation of awards BHS has ever seen. The members of the class performed acts and commercials ranging from dramatic presentation to uproarious comedy. The entertainment was followed by the awarding of honors and scholarships, and the Class Prophecy read by the gypsy, Mrs. Bowden.
