The action took place in present day England where Reverend Toop and his far-from-ordinary-wife, Penelope, occupy the vicarage. Early in the first act a spinster, Miss Skillon, made her appearance. Miss Skillon, it appeared, had her eye on Reverend Toop before his marriage and had consequently used every means to show her dislike for Penelope. The action became complicated when Penelope's old friend, Clive, just happened to show up and the couple left to spend an evening out. Adding to this confusion were Reverend Humphrey, the Bishop, and an escaped Russian. After much running around trying to establish the identities of the men in the play, the Russian was captured and peace was restored. The curtain closed just as another round of confusion was about to begin.
