It is our hope that by dedicating our yearbook to our Class Parents, we have been able to express our gratitude and our sincere appreciation for all they have done as advisors and friends. We are proud to have been class parents for this Class of 1961. You have all worked hard to arrive at this phase of your education, and we trust that somewhere along the way we were of some help. May we wish you success and happiness in all of your future ventures. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Bastron To the Class of 1961: Congratulations to the class of 1961 for your successes. Also, congratulations upon this fine annual. No doubt, it will hold treasured memories of your enjoyable high school days. As a final reminder, permit me to say: Be a continuous learner; be ever willing to serve society in a constructive way; do not lose sight of moral and spiritual values; put self-discipline high on your list; and finally be industrious and self-reliant. As you leave your high school, I wish you continued success and happiness for the future. IVAN CHRISTIAN Superintendent Our Administration To The Class of 1961: Congratulations to the Class of 1961 for fine achievements and cooperation during your four years of high school. The action took place in a theater. As the play began, a stage set for 500 years in the future was seen. Soon afterwards the lights went out and a shot was fired from the audience. In the next second the lights went on and John Randall was found dying on the floor. Following Randall's death, came Sergeant Kennedy and his Chinese Assistant who were attending the theater that night. They narrowed the suspicion down to five people in the audience. In the action that followed, a second murder—that of Naomi Edwards just as she was about to reveal the name of the first murderer—as well as the comedy provided by Mrs. Inglefritz and her child took place. Finally, it was revealed by Lee that a sinister spy ring to which Randall and Mrs. Edwards had belonged had been operating in the theater. The Murderers were brought to justice and all ended well. 18 Soon afterward. Sergeant Kennedy took over and questioned members of the audience. JiasJzetha I S 7uacfJor '61 R. Wombacher, R. The action took place in present day England where Reverend Toop and his far-from-ordinary-wife, Penelope, occupy the vicarage. Early in the first act a spinster, Miss Skillon, made her appearance. Miss Skillon, it appeared, had her eye on Reverend Toop before his marriage and had consequently used every means to show her dislike for Penelope. The action became complicated when Penelope's old friend, Clive, just happened to show up and the couple left to spend an evening out. Adding to this confusion were Reverend Humphrey, the Bishop, and an escaped Russian. After much running around trying to establish the identities of the men in the play, the Russian was captured and peace was restored. The curtain closed just as another round of confusion was about to begin. Sandra Chapman, Cheryl Amend, Alex Karloutsos, Harriett Henkel, Marva Elder The One-Act Plays were held on March 7. Four plays were given. The casts for the plays were chosen from all four of the high school classes. The best play— Nobody Sleeps —was sent to contest where it received a Superior rating. Out of the four plays three people were chosen to receive Tiger Awards for their portrayal of a character in a play. Dressed semi-formally, Band members and their dates had an enjoyable evening of dancing under the Japanese lanterns. 30 Opera Cast Takes A Bow This year, Bayard High School opened its doors to a new and different idea. For the first time, an opera was presented in B.H.S. The chorus department produced Amahl and the Night Visitors written by Gian-Carlo Menotti. The story of Amahl and the Night Visitors tells of a small, crippled boy and his poor widow mother. One night they are visited by three kings who are following a star to find a newborn babe, the King of mankind. Amahl, not having a gift of his own to offer to the child, offers to send his crutch. As he presents his crutch to the visitors, Amahl is healed. The kings deem this a miracle; therefore, Amahl departs with the kings to give thanks to the newborn king himself. We must not lose sight of our star! Don't you dare hurt my mother! 31 JKixecf GAorus FOURTH ROW: L. Bauxbaum, D. Ostermiller, N. Speer, L Elliott, V. Bastron, G. Rein, L. Graf, B. Kniss, D.
