PUBLISHED BY THE 1958 SENIOR CLASS OF BAYARD HIGH SCHOOL BAYARD, N This book is the story of a school year in Bayard High School—1957-58. There were friends, fads, finals, frustrations, some failures, and much fun . . . Remember when band rehearsals disturbed the early morning silence of B.H.S. with “E Pluribus Unum” or “To a Wild Rose”? And there were those little surprises to make your school day a little less routine. The faithful lockers that sheltered lunches would empty pronto after that last morning hell. BMiiiimi - There were phys ed classes to build your body—and your mind. Who says it doesn’t take mental coordination to stay on top of a human pyramid? It was 3:55, the end of a day—every day. that was never quite the same. Were you in shop class? Remember when you almost lost a finger because you were using the band saw and also trying to watch the girls’ phys ed class play ping-pong in the next room? Gb- On some Fridays, there were pep rallies to boost morale and let off steam. When the band played that last march, vou were dismissed . . . TO THE CLASS OF '58: VOICE OF THE ADMINISTRATION My congratulations to you upon your having successfully completed your high school education. Your several records and achievements, both as individuals and as a class, have established an enviable record. In this period of the atomic age and man’s attempt of the conquest of space, we have a few terms which may be likened to your past experiences as well as those you may have before you. “Launching pads” may be compared with your home environment, education up to now, and church influence. I trust this background training has inspired you to be well-prepared citizens. The “Countdown” has been in operation the last few weeks—those final moments of great anxiety. The success of the “blast off” which follows immediately the countdown depends entirely upon past preparations which must be correct to every minute detail. We hope our school has prepared you. In other words, we want no fizzles or duds. If all plans and actions are properly executed—no missing parts or plans—you will go into “orbit.” That means success! Your success does not depend upon the height of your orbit, but rather “are you in orbit.” Upon your graduation, you will face a new and different world. I hope each of you is prepared and will successfully go into “orbit.” My best wishes go with you. IVAN CHRISTIAN Superintendent To inspire Youth to do their best; To counsel and guide them toward worthwhile goals; To encourage them to continue their education; To trust them and to realize they will carry on where we leave off ... Preparing to “take off” for our last and most important year at B.H.S. are senior officers: Nellene Foreman, Secretary, Bob BreningTreasurer, Duane Laeger, President, Dave Cunningham, Vice-President. The capital being tabulated by the class sponsors, Mrs. Mansfield and Mr. Stine, is not nearly so valuable as the time and advice that they devoted to making our senior year productive and memorable. 17 HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1958 We started as real down-to-earth freshmen, the lowest things in BHS, and blessed Mr. Butts with the privilege (?) of being our first sponsor. Mr. and Mrs. Willey acted as our class parents, and Alan Plummer, Fauna Trout, Harlean Yekel, and Richard Specht were our class officers. Darlene Lundgren, Jerry Burge, and Bill Wallesen represented us in Student Council. We tried our wings as sophomores with Mr. Engles, our sponsor, and Mr. and Mrs. Little, our class parents, urging us skyward. Fauna Trout was elected president, Gary Faessler, vice-president, Carmen Lewellen, secretary, and Alan Plummer, treasurer. Student Council representatives were Darlene Lundgren, Paul Sauer, and Jerry Burge. At the close of this second year of high school, the juniors allowed us to serve at the prom, “Candyland,” and we labored to decorate the stage for baccalaureate. We had a successful flight as busy juniors. Our sponsors were Mr. Knepper and Mrs. Cunningham; Mr. and Mrs. Plummer were our class parents. David Cunningham, president, Judy Speer, vice-president, Harlean Yekel, secretary, and Ronnie Leis, treasurer, led us through a memorable year filled with activity. We gave our class play, “Green Valley,” received our class rings, campaigned for offices in County Government, and worked to decorate for the Junior-Senior Prom, creating a twilight garden scene “Deep Purple.” Alan Plummer was elected as Student Council vice-president, and Paul Sauer, Fauna Trout, and Darlene Lundgren were our representatives. The National Honor Society tapped Fauna Trout, Judy Speer, Alan Plummer, and David Cunningham; the school traditions were handed down to Duane Laeger—Honor Yoke, David Cunningham—School Spirit, and Alan Plummer—Athletic Letter and Book of Knowledge. In our senior year under the leadership of our class officers—Duane Laeger, president, David Cunningham, vice-president, Nellene Foreman, secretary, and Bob Brening, treasurer—we prepared for our departure from BHS. Guiding us were Mrs. Mansfield and Mr. Stine, our sponsors, and our class parents, Mr. and Mrs. Plummer. During this last year of high school we contributed our greatest amount of participation in school activities. Alan Plummer, Student Council president, was assisted by the secretary, Judy Speer, and the representatives, Ronnie Leis, Paul Sauer, and Darlene Lundgren. The class play, a mellow-drammer called “Pure as the Driven Snow,” was presented to help finance the printing of the ’58 Tiger; we also sold candy and magazines to further this project. Paul Sauer and Phyllis Little were honored as ’58 Basketball king and queen, and Barbara Chase was selected to represent us in the D.A.R. essay contest. We were honored with the prom, “Fantasy in Blue,” and we were faced with decisions concerning scholarships and our immediate futures. Then came sneak day, the Ice Capades, class night, honors gained and lost, Commencement night and it was over. High school for 35 was a thing of the past. To the blast of rock ’n’ roll, clad in “Ivy Leagues,” and eager to enter the world of adults in that International Geophysical Year of 1958, we left BHS to “launch” ourselves in our respective orbits, remembering that “Looking longingly at the top of the ladder avails nothing; it is the climb that counts.” 18 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF THE CLASS OF 1958 We departing graduates of Bayard High School, being of sound mind and in possession of sober judgment, do now make our final bequests to those who remain in dear old B.H.S.
