In the middle of a chemistry lecture on phenoe-formaldehyde resins, Bill’s vision blurred and he was soon whirling through space. When his vision cleared he found himself on a jet transcontinental airliner. The stewardess came toward him, as he asked the plane’s destination. The helpful stewardess said the plane was flying to Hollywood. Bill looked around him, and saw that the passengers consisted almost entirely of people from the Bayard High School Class of 1957. He knew that EUNICE KAISER, the stewardess, had been elected “Miss Airline Hostess of 1967”; and he wyas curious about the other passengers. He recognized DONALD BRODERICK, whom he had seen polishing gold bricks in Fort Knox; and SARA CONTRERAS, who had always wanted to be a lady evangelist. CLARENCE HIEGEL, SHIRLEY FEIL, LARRY SITTNER, and JOHN SIEGFRIED were surprised to see Bill and were eager to tell him about their occupations. Clarence said he had become a scientist and his latest invention was a “Never Fail Football Preventative.” Shirley Feil announced that she was happily married to a Texan. Evidently Shirley enjoys Texas jokes because she was starting her seventh scrapbook. John Siegfried said Larry Sittner was a doctor in Aunt Bessie’s Doll Hospital, but didn’t volunteer any information about himself. Larry explained that John held breath-taking exhibitions by parachuting from such towering places as the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Chimney Rock. Near the rear of the plane there was another cluster of friends. SANDRA BURDEN asked Bill to come back and sit with them. She said she was the personal advisor to the President. LORETTA HILL informed Bill that she was a highly-paid personal secretary to a bubble gum magnate, none other than PAUL McDANIEL. BONNIE JEFFRES declared that she had entered a race at the Indianapolis Speed-Nvay and now was the first person to break the sound barrier driving a car. Bill told PAT NERUD he had seen her many times on television and thought she was doing very well replacing George Gombel. ANGIE SANCHEZ was very modest as she told Bill that she had been elected “Mrs. Homemaker of New York State.” MONTE FEATHER, president of a bee factory in Red Willow City, Nebraska, brought out samples of his honey for the group. Bill returned to his seat for the landing in Hollywood. As he descended from the plane, he saw a welcoming committee made up of his acquaintances—LEONARD DE1NES, who directed most of the Academy Award winners of 1967; RUDY NEGRETE, coach of the Oklahoma football team; CLINTON WILLEY, house speaker in the Arkansas senate; ROBERT SCHLEGEL, mayor of Gering, Nebraska; GINGER SCHMUNK, proprietress of an exclusive dress shop in Redington, Nebraska; and TOM VERA, pro-football player for the Los Angeles Rams. The committee told Bill that they were a delegation sent to escort the members of the Class of 1957 to a premiere of JOHN ENSSEH’S first movie entitled, “The Three Bums.” DELORES SCHAFFER said she appeared on television as a Dutchhopper, and GLADYS SAUER said she was combining two careers, that of housewife and nationally-known script writer. LAURA McDANIEL mentioned being a personal barber to the President. As Bill waited in the lobby, RICHARD BECKER came up looking very adventuresome and said he was back from a space trip to Venus. Richard and Bill began wondering about some of their friends who were not at the premiere. Bill knew that RAYMOND LEIS had won the triple crown on a horse called Sparkplug. Richard said that KAREN KORELL was the best missionary you could find in the deepest, darkest parts of South Dakota. Just then JANICE BUCK-HAMMF.R, STANLEY COLLAMORE. JOANN HUBBARD, JOHN LIAKOS and VIOLET McDANIEL came to ask Richard about his trip. Janice, since she had been singing at the Crane Club, commented that she saw lots of her old classmates, such as JIM KRANTZ, who won the Talking Marathon of 1967; HARVEY EIRICH, who ran the 3-minute mile at the last Olympic games; LARRY NUSS, who wyas appointed “Honorary Salesman of Lower Slobovia”; and ROBERT SCHAFFER, who was campaigning for the office of Secretary of Agriculture. JOHN LIAKOS said that life was never dull for him since he was elected president of the Eligible Bachelor’s Club. STANLEY COLLAMORE said he was on leave from the Navy, and JoAnne said she was running Hubbard’s Academy for Cheerleaders. VIOLET McDANIEL admitted that she wyas elected “Miss Carhop of 1967.” As Bill found his seat in the theater, he saw CHARLOTTE COMSTOCK, a physical therapist; BOB KIRCHHOFF, a typical American millionaire; GWEN McKIE, an excellent recruiter for the undertaking business; LARRY DALBEY, minister of the Methodist Church near Angora, Nebraska; DALE SCHOENEMAN, who owned a watermellon farm in Alaska: and DICK McGEE, director of the Navy Band. Bill heard someone calling his name over and over. He began to float away from his friends. Abruptly Bill woke up as the teacher tapped him on the shoulder saying, “You will never pass chemistry if you don’t stay awake in class.”
