7 Oevi ‘P teette . . , The Senior Class of 1957 dedicates “The Tiger” to Mr. and Mrs. Jake Krantz in appreciation for the guidance and understanding which they have rendered our class during the five years they have served as class parents. This opportunity for expression is a happy one for us; now we can say publicly what we have felt privately about this Class since your junior high school days. You have been a vital part of our lives. We have worried about some things and hoped for the best. Yet we’ve loved you and have been proud of you, too. We are proud to have been Class Parents for this Class of 1957. We hope that the future holds only happiness and prosperity for each and every one of you personally. Mr. and Mrs. Jake Krantz '77teA4 i 2e pKMt t To The Class of 1957: Graduating Seniors, you are completing one phase of your life and are about to embark on another. For some this phase is a stepping stone to future college and vocational training while for others this phase will end your formal educational training. We hope that the problems encountered and experiences gained while attending Bayard High School will have prepared you well for meeting the problems and experiences that you will face in the future. We wish you success and happiness in all your future ventures. A job well done is a sound foundation for happiness. Sincerely, NORVAL R. TROUT Principal To The Class of 1957: I offer my congratulations to the class of ’57 and particularly the annual staff and sponsor, Roma Jean Mansfield, for this fine annual. This no doubt will be a treasured reminder of the many happy hours, days, months and years spent acquiring your education in the Bayard High School. As a final word—permit me to admonish you of the following: Be self-reliant, be industrious, be quick to decide favorably on moral and spiritual values, be ready and willing to serve mankind and above all, be demanding of self discipline and finally, be a continuous learner. My best wishes go with you. IVAN CHRISTIAN Superintendent Standing: Elnora Shimp, Secretary; Ivan Christian. Superintendent. Seated, left to right: F. E. Raymond, E. A. MacDonald, V. F. Plummer, J. Senior officers from left to right: Gwen McKie, Secretary; Larry Sittner, President; JoAnne Hub-hard, Treasurer; Vice President, John Liakos.- These senior officers were kept busy during this school term helping to make sneak day, the ice capades, class night, the senior breakfast, and other activities successful. The two senior class sponsors, Mrs. Mansfield and Mr. Stine also contributed to the success of the various events and made these activities possible. 4 In the fall of ’53 the freshmen elected Larry Sittner as class president, Clarence Hiegel as vice president, who later served as president when Larry Sittner moved away, Dick McGee as treasurer, and JoAnne Hubbard as secretary to lead us through our first year. For our class sponsor we chose Mr. Butts. Mr. and Mrs. Jake Krantz were elected for class parents. For freshman entertainment we held two parties and a class picnic. We were very proud the night that we beat Gering and won the N.P.V. championship. Our sophomore year was a very successful one. The class officers were Eddie Schaff, president; Stanley Collamore, vice president; Janice Buckhammer, secretary; and Wanema Cummings, treasurer. Our Student Council representatives were Karen Korell and Sandra Burden. Our sponsor was Mr. Tillman and Mr. and Mrs. Jake Krantz were our class parents. JoAnne Hubbard was crowned the first basketball queen ever to reign at B.H.S. As sophomores we decorated the gymnasium for senior baccalaureate. We felt privileged to serve at the Junior-Senior Prom for which the theme was Moonlight and Roses. For the big job ahead of us during our junior year we elected Sandra Burden as president, Karen Korell as vice president, Pat Nerud as secretary, and Gwen McKie as treasurer. Our sponsors were Mrs. Cunningham and Mr. Knepper. Representatives were Jim Krantz, Stan Collamore, and Dale Schoeneman. Janice Buckhammer was elected football queen. We were proud of our first class play, “More Than Meets the Eye.” Our biggest project was the Junior-Senior Prom with Candyland as our theme. School traditions were handed down to the following students: Book of Knowledge, Sandra Burden; School Spirit, Karen Korell; Athletic Letter, Harvey Eirich; and Honor Yoke, Larry Sittner. One of our most thrilling moments was when we received our junior class rings. As seniors we worked harder than ever. Our senior officers were Larry Sittner, president; John Liakos, vice president; Gwen McKie, secretary; JoAnne Hubbard, treasurer. Our class sponsors were Mrs. Mansfield and Mr. Stine and our class parents were Mr. and Mrs. Jake Krantz. Our Student Council representatives were Jim Krantz, president; Karen Korell, secretary; Dick McGee; Sara Contreras; and Pat Nerud. Mr. Mekeel helped us with our class play, “The Skeleton Walks.” We sold magazines to finance our class projects, then we worked very hard to assemble the “Tiger” under the supervision of John Liakos, editor; and Sandra Burden, associate editor. Mrs. Mansfield was the sponsor. During an impressive induction service Dick McGee, Larry Sittner, Alan Plummer, Fauna Trout, David Cunningham and Judy Speer were tapped for National Honor Society by the old members, Karen Korell, president; Pat Nerud, vice president; Charlotte Comstock, secretary; and Sandra Burden, treasurer. Our DAR representative was Pat Nerud. The senior class presented its share of B.H.S. royalty. The royal couple who reigned over the Band Ball were Sandra Burden and Jim Krantz. Eunice Kaiser was a lovely football queen, and Pat Nerud and Tom Vera reigned over a successful basketball season during which Bayard won the District Class “B” Tournament. The seniors were entertained by the junior class at the Junior-Senior Prom which carried a theme of Deep Purple. Seniors who were chosen for the Hall of Fame were Pat Nerud, Janice Buckhammer, Jim Krantz, and Tom Vera. The Seniors enjoyed a trip to the Ice Capades at Denver. On May 6 they sneaked away to spend, a carefree sneak day out of school. The seniors completed their last year in which they followed their motto, “Be not simply good, be good for something.” Class night and Baccalaureate came in rapid succession and then graduation. The ceremonies followed the senior’s theme, lavender and white with the class flower, the orchid. As the dignified strains of the graduation march filled the air, the class of 1957 received their diplomas and passed slowly out of Bayard High School. In the middle of a chemistry lecture on phenoe-formaldehyde resins, Bill’s vision blurred and he was soon whirling through space. When his vision cleared he found himself on a jet transcontinental airliner. The stewardess came toward him, as he asked the plane’s destination. The helpful stewardess said the plane was flying to Hollywood. Bill looked around him, and saw that the passengers consisted almost entirely of people from the Bayard High School Class of 1957. He knew that EUNICE KAISER, the stewardess, had been elected “Miss Airline Hostess of 1967”; and he wyas curious about the other passengers. He recognized DONALD BRODERICK, whom he had seen polishing gold bricks in Fort Knox; and SARA CONTRERAS, who had always wanted to be a lady evangelist. CLARENCE HIEGEL, SHIRLEY FEIL, LARRY SITTNER, and JOHN SIEGFRIED were surprised to see Bill and were eager to tell him about their occupations. Clarence said he had become a scientist and his latest invention was a “Never Fail Football Preventative.” Shirley Feil announced that she was happily married to a Texan. Evidently Shirley enjoys Texas jokes because she was starting her seventh scrapbook. John Siegfried said Larry Sittner was a doctor in Aunt Bessie’s Doll Hospital, but didn’t volunteer any information about himself. Larry explained that John held breath-taking exhibitions by parachuting from such towering places as the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Chimney Rock. Near the rear of the plane there was another cluster of friends. SANDRA BURDEN asked Bill to come back and sit with them. She said she was the personal advisor to the President. LORETTA HILL informed Bill that she was a highly-paid personal secretary to a bubble gum magnate, none other than PAUL McDANIEL. BONNIE JEFFRES declared that she had entered a race at the Indianapolis Speed-Nvay and now was the first person to break the sound barrier driving a car. Bill told PAT NERUD he had seen her many times on television and thought she was doing very well replacing George Gombel. ANGIE SANCHEZ was very modest as she told Bill that she had been elected “Mrs. Homemaker of New York State.” MONTE FEATHER, president of a bee factory in Red Willow City, Nebraska, brought out samples of his honey for the group. Bill returned to his seat for the landing in Hollywood. As he descended from the plane, he saw a welcoming committee made up of his acquaintances—LEONARD DE1NES, who directed most of the Academy Award winners of 1967; RUDY NEGRETE, coach of the Oklahoma football team; CLINTON WILLEY, house speaker in the Arkansas senate; ROBERT SCHLEGEL, mayor of Gering, Nebraska; GINGER SCHMUNK, proprietress of an exclusive dress shop in Redington, Nebraska; and TOM VERA, pro-football player for the Los Angeles Rams. The committee told Bill that they were a delegation sent to escort the members of the Class of 1957 to a premiere of JOHN ENSSEH’S first movie entitled, “The Three Bums.” DELORES SCHAFFER said she appeared on television as a Dutchhopper, and GLADYS SAUER said she was combining two careers, that of housewife and nationally-known script writer. LAURA McDANIEL mentioned being a personal barber to the President. As Bill waited in the lobby, RICHARD BECKER came up looking very adventuresome and said he was back from a space trip to Venus. Richard and Bill began wondering about some of their friends who were not at the premiere. Bill knew that RAYMOND LEIS had won the triple crown on a horse called Sparkplug. Richard said that KAREN KORELL was the best missionary you could find in the deepest, darkest parts of South Dakota. Just then JANICE BUCK-HAMMF.R, STANLEY COLLAMORE. JOANN HUBBARD, JOHN LIAKOS and VIOLET McDANIEL came to ask Richard about his trip. Janice, since she had been singing at the Crane Club, commented that she saw lots of her old classmates, such as JIM KRANTZ, who won the Talking Marathon of 1967; HARVEY EIRICH, who ran the 3-minute mile at the last Olympic games; LARRY NUSS, who wyas appointed “Honorary Salesman of Lower Slobovia”; and ROBERT SCHAFFER, who was campaigning for the office of Secretary of Agriculture. JOHN LIAKOS said that life was never dull for him since he was elected president of the Eligible Bachelor’s Club. STANLEY COLLAMORE said he was on leave from the Navy, and JoAnne said she was running Hubbard’s Academy for Cheerleaders. VIOLET McDANIEL admitted that she wyas elected “Miss Carhop of 1967.” As Bill found his seat in the theater, he saw CHARLOTTE COMSTOCK, a physical therapist; BOB KIRCHHOFF, a typical American millionaire; GWEN McKIE, an excellent recruiter for the undertaking business; LARRY DALBEY, minister of the Methodist Church near Angora, Nebraska; DALE SCHOENEMAN, who owned a watermellon farm in Alaska: and DICK McGEE, director of the Navy Band. Bill heard someone calling his name over and over. He began to float away from his friends. Abruptly Bill woke up as the teacher tapped him on the shoulder saying, “You will never pass chemistry if you don’t stay awake in class.” yu U i Ted Kraus Duane Laeger Ronald Leis Bob Lewis Phyllis Little Darlene Lundgren Linda Maxcy Jack Mues Darrel Parker The sponsors of the junior class, Mrs. Cunningham and Mr. Knepper, throughout the “56-57” school year, donated many hours of time directing the work in preparation for the Junior Class Play and the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. The start of a very exciting and busy year began with the Junior Class Play. Their thrill of the year, however, was the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. Taking charge of the Senior Commencement ended the 56-57 year for the Juniors. Leading the Juniors through the year were, from left to right: Vice President, Judy Speer; Secretary, Harlene Yekel; President, David Cunningham; and Treasurer, Ronald Leis. Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Plummer, the class parents of the Junior Class, dedicated both time and effort to the preparations for the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet and many other activities of the class.
