Commerce f The fall of '37 marked our entry Into the educational world--a group of youngsters unaware of the problems, triumphs, and experiences which lay ahead. Only six of our present thirty-one seniors began their studies in the Bayard City Schools that year. They were Ronald Barkdoll, Gary Hoxworth, Robert Langhofer, Leroy Leikam, Kenneth Rystrom, and Jack Shaw. Since that initial year we have lost many students from our class, but we have also gained new talent and new energy from students joining our group. ft was a class of fifty-four that entered Bayard High in 1946, destined to become the Golden Class of '50. Miss Margaret Stephens was our sponsor, and Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Barkdoll were class parents. Our officers were: President-Kenneth Rystrom; vice-president-Delores Lind; secretary-Fred Brown; treasurer-Virginia Holm; Student Council Representative-Ronald Barkdoll. High school was strange to us; and, in fact, many of us were strangers to each other. In order to become better acquainted, we gave a party during the second semester, but invited only ourselves. Our roll had decreased to 47 by the time the Mid-Century Class entered B. H. S. as sophomores. Mr. Jack Wier was our sponsor, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lind our class parents. Our new officers were: President-Glenn Speer; vice-president-Ronald Barkdoll; secretary-Alice Michal; treasurer-Paula Wall -esen; and student council representative-Joan Bangert. We took a greater interest in our school and its activities. In the latter part of April, we gave a May-Day party, this time inviting the entire school. Although we lost a little money, we had a lot of fun. (And took pride in earning our fair share of the honors.) Another milestone was reached as the members of our class became juniors and became upperclassmen. We had an active year ahead of us and elected our officers to head us through our various activities. Pat Anest was chosen President; Lynn Heintz-Vice-president; Paul Anest-Secretary; Gladys Kleim-Treasurer; Mr. Victor Weidensee our sponsor; and Dr. and Mrs. K. F. Rystrom class parents. Our first real activity was a carnival in November. It was a great success and did much to build class spirit within our group of 39 students. Beyond Reason was our junior class play, presented in December. It surely was a spooky affair, but we enjoyed haunting the old sanatorium. The day our class rings arrived was a day to remember. We were sure we had chosen the finest in the history of our school. Undoubtedly, the biggest event in our junior year was our Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Our theme was A Little Bit of Holland and our decorations and program were designed to carry out the name. For the first time the Prom after the Banquet was held down town at the V. F.W. Hall. By the time the gym was completely cleaned after the banquet, we were a real class, welded together into a solid mass of friendship. Joan Bangert, Pat Anest, Lynn Heintz, and Kenneth Rystrom were selected to receive the school traditions and to carry them for the next year. It was with real dismay that we received our final marks as juniors--not to come together again as a group until the next fall. But the summer soon passed—and then we were seniors. We elected these officers: President-Bob Yekel; vice-president-Robert Langhofer; secretary-Ronald Barkdoll; treasurer-Alice Michal, and later Kenneth Schneider; student council representative-Glenn Speer; Mr. Aldon Sobie was our sponsor, and Dr. and Mrs. Rystrom were again chosen class parents. At first it didn't seem real that we were actually publishing The Sandburr and that we were really going to edit the annual. ---And then we did it! ! When a planned trip to Gering Fell through , we went anyway. An afternoon of excitement, four car loads of seniors, Scotts Bluff Monument, Lake Minatare—and six hours makeup. Even so, it did the trick--we had real class spirit, a type we had never dreamed possible before. As this is written, the 1950 Tiger is all but completed. It is our hope that it will serve as a living memory of the wonderful days in B. H. S. during the '49-'50 school year. Our senior class play will soon be started. Following that will come the Junior-Senior Banquet--only this time it will be we who are the guests. Then — graduation!! Indeed it seems such a short time since we first drew for our seats in the freshman study hall. The months and years have rolled by, almost unnoticed. We are about to leave dear old Bayard High behind forever—to enter into the world with a will and a purpose. And so to you--the underclassmen, we leave with you the traditions of our school Be yours to hold them high! ! f Robert Langhofer B Club 4 Movie Operator 3, 4 Vice-President 4 Chorus 3, 4 Vocal Clinic 3, 4 Track 2, 3, 4 Basketball 2, 3 Football 1, 4 Sandburr 4 Annual Staff 4 Virginia Holm Chorus 1, 2, 3, 4 Sextette 2, 4 Vocal Clinic 1, 2, 3, 4 Football Queen 4 Librarian 2, 3, 4 Sandburr Staff 4 Small Choir 2 Class Treasurer 1 Annual Staff 4 Bob Yekel Entered from Scottsbluff 3 B Club 3, 4 Sandburr Staff 4 Annual Staff 4 Band 3, 4 Brass Quartet 3 Brass Sextette 3 Dance Band 3, 4 Football 3, 4 Basketball 3, 4 Track 3, 4 Boy’s State 3 Chorus 4 Vocal Clinic 4 Beyond Reason 3 One Act Plays 3 Class President 4 Student Council 4 Band President 3 LeRoy Leikam Phys. Of this number, twenty-five were boys and fifteen were girls. Edna Schoeneman dropped out in October but Wanda Huddleston and Darlene Libsack joined the class for the second semester swelling the class list to forty-one students. After getting back to school and seeing all their friends again they held their class election September 9th. The following officers were elected: President Vice-president Secretary Treasurer Student Council Rep. Class Parents Sponsor James Toland Jerry Leever Patricia Petersen Bernice Suhr Roger Deal Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Stockwell Mr. Paul Phillips To help earn class funds, the juniors sold hot-dogs, pop, candy bars and the like at the Bayard-Mitchell football game here Friday evening, October 14. Every junior is proud of his or her class ring which was selected early in November and delivered in February. Naturally the juniors think their ring is the prettiest ring in school. After much preparation, the juniors gave the first class party of the season, an Armistice Night box social that was enjoyed by the students and faculty. That Brewster Boy was selected as the class play. It was a sparkling comedy of youth, full of clever lines and situations, that pleased every person who saw it December 13, and 14. Between the second and third acts the class gave Miss Huhs, their director, a lovely gift in appreciation of her services. The really big event of the junior year was the Junior-Senior Banquet which was given May 5th. Everyone worked hard and made the affair a real success in honor of the Class of ’50 .
