HALSTED Our sponsor, Mr. Halsted came to Bayard High School from Burlington, Colorado. His friendliness and willingness to help in all our class projects have made him a grand friend and a truly wonderful sponsor. —12— WE THE SENIORS Recall the year of 1935 when seventeen of our present fifty-three seniors were just starting to school at the North Ward School. They were Harry Amend, Ruby Brinkman, Duane Castellaw, Helen Candlin, James Cadwell, Violet Ehrhart, Jean Goll, Marilyn Huck, Fred Hageman, Patsy Lambert, De-lores Pinske, Ann Richter, Betty Splittgerber, Roger Stelk, Charles Shaw, Jackie Thompson, and Dolores Varela. During the years more students have come to Bayard, while others have moved away, attending school elsewhere. Some of them have returned here to complete their education. The faculty was astonished by the eighty-two freshmen who enrolled that warm autumn day in 1944. We elected Mrs. Hopple and Miss Gregg as our sponsors. Mrs. Candlin was our class mother. Our officers were: president, Roger Stelk; vice-president, Jerry Lincoln; secretary, Marilyn Upton; and treasurer, Lee Hiegel. Several of the boys took part in athletics, chorus, and B Club, and some of the girls enrolled in G. A. A., chorus, and Pep Club. Seventy-one sophomores returned the next year. Our co-sponsors were: Mrs. Raymond and Mrs. Person. Mrs. Candlin was again class mother. We elected for president, Lee Hiegel; vice-president, James Holm; secretary, Duane Castellaw; and treasurer, Charles Reifschneider. Sixty-five happy juniors got their class rings the next year. Mr. and Mrs. McCarthy were elected as class parents. Mr. Franklin was our sponsor. Our officers were: president, Charles Shaw; vice-president, Helen Candlin; secretary, Ruby Brinkman; and treasurer, Ruth Kramer. The climax of our junior year was our class play Best Foot Forward and the junior-senior banquet and prom which was an Hawaiian theme. Now at last we are Seniors. We make up the Sandburr Staff and the annual staff. Nine of our outstanding members, Lee Hiegel, Donald Speer, Dolores Varela, Jackie Hoyt, Ruby Brinkman, Helen Candlin, Violet Ehrhart, Jean Goll, and Mary Ellen McCarthy became members of the National Honor Society. Mr. and Mrs. McCarthy are our class parents and Mrs. Raymond and Mr. Halsted are our sponsors. Mr. Halsted is also our annual sponsor. We elected Russell Durnal as our president; Jean Lane, vice-president; Elaine Rakes, treasurer; and Dolores Varela, treasurer. We regret to leave our fellow classmates and Bayard High as we look back over the years and think of the fun and the parties and picnics we have enjoyed. —13— Lee Hiegel, Jean Goll, Don Speer -14- BRAINS Lee Hiegel Ruby Brinkman WHO'S WHO BEAUTY Violet Ehrhart Charles Shaw MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Helen Candlin Russell Durnal POPULARITY Jean Goll Charles Reifschneider CLASS WIT Roger Stelk Elaine Rakes FOOTBALL GUEEN AND CO-CAPTAINS MOST ATHLETIC Wesley Sell Ann Liakos STANDING: Dolores Varela, Jackie Hoyt, Ruby Brinkman, Lee Hiegel, Don Speer. The Tiger players are chosen from the annual One Act Play festival held in the spring. Each year the five best actors and five best actresses are given a pin to indicate their membership. PROJECTOR OPERATORS Bayard High is very fortunate in being able to offer a good program in visual education. A new DeVry 16 mm. proector was purchased by the board of education a year ago and is used nearly every day by teachers to show motion pictures illustrating and enriching the subject matter presented in the various classes. The movie projector is also used to present March of Time and other outstanding films for convocation programs. A group of high school boys has taken over the responsibility of operating the projector for all the films presented at B. H. S. and North Ward. These boys receive credit as well as valuable experience. The senior projector operators as pictured above are: Lee Frakes, Roger Stelk, Bob Heyl, Hugh Rath. Junior operators are: Harley Axford, Robert Langhofer, and Jim Schwindt. LIBRARIANS TOP ROW: Ann Liakos, Jackie Thompson, Dorothy Hubbard, Delores Bauer, Donna Rogge, Virginia Holm.
