Senior Class History “ Before Us Lies the Timber, Let Us Build” (Drama in Four Acts) Act I FRESH FRESHMAN: As the curtain rose, one hundred fifteen timid, frightened freshmen stepped onto the stage. Before them lay the timber, and they started building. These freshmen, on the firm foundation set up by the faculty and shod board, began to build their first floor, the lower story. Mishaps occurred which served to diminish their number somewhat, hammers dropped on toes, splinters hurt their hands, grades toppled which led their whole attention to pa’s woodshed. After building their first story, the accidents had splintered the class down to only eighty-five carpenters. Then as they began to buildim their second story, the curtain fell. Act II SHY SOPHOMORES: The curtain rose. Only eighty-five characters were left, each still supplied with timber, nails, hammers, etc., with which to build a sturdy second story. Some of our female members ran into some knots in the timber and so the knot took its toll. The justice of the peace then supplied a knot that clinched things, and thus our membership fell. A few of our carpenters slipped and fell, a few hit their thumbs wifh their hammer, a few were fired and a few resigned and so their class dwindled down as the second act drew to a close. A picnic was enjoyed before the curtain fell on their second year of building. JOLLY JUNIORS: Act III Only seventy-five characters were left after the hard ordeal of the second act during which a rigid second story was built. But there was plenty of timber left and so they continued building. Among the things that helped to complete the third story in fine shape was the class play “Moon River Rancho,” a western comedy. Jerrene Cross and Bradford Benton with the other members of the cast played to a full auditorium. Then, on April 26, the Juniors entertained the Seniors with a Rainbow banquet. The significance of this banquet from the Juniors was that the Seniors might find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. And so, the third act neared the end; a splendid three-story building was erected but it was yet incomplete. Thus the situation stood as the curtain gracefully descended to earth. Act IV SATISFIED SENIORS: The curtain rose on the last act and fifty Seniors were left to construct the building with the remaining timber. Football Captain Benton led the boys on the gridiron through victory and defeat. Jo Fricke was crowned Football Queen at the first home game. Then as the basketball season got under way it was seen that Bayard had a championship team. Captain Ninegar, with the rest of the team won the North Platte Valley Championship. Actors and actresses started work on the annual Play Festival. “Ile,” the winning play, with Jerrene Cross and Lew Walter cast in the leading parts, received the rating, “Excellent,” at the district play tournament. As the month of April came into being many high school activities began to take shape. First, the music contest on April 3 and 4 with three seniors receiving a “Superior” rating—Louise Duerkson, violin; Jerrene Cross, medium voice; George Mason, trumpet. The Juniors worked hard but not in vain on the 1936 Junior-Senior banquet, for the Seniors felt well repaid for their efforts in high school by this well-planned banquet. And then, as the year drew to close, the Seniors presented their class play, “The Fool,” with Lucille Ericson and Bradford Benton playing the leading roles. Then as the Commencement Exercises ended the Seniors named it the one and only Bayard High School. The curtain fell on the drama and a new one was commenced with fifty carpenters left to erect their next building of learning. (6)
