Last year the Bayard High School Track Team experienced a very successful year. They won the Bridgeport Invitational meet, Mitchell Invitational meet and Alliance Night meet; placed second in the Scottsbluff relays, third in the Western Nebraska meet and defeated Minatare in a dual meet. Bayard won three firsts at the Western Nebraska meet, Chavez winning the mile and half-mile, and Bob Meredith the high hurdles. Don Meredith won second in the 440 and Selwyn Cook third. Benton won third in the pole-vault, Ross Putman won fourth place in the high hurdles at the Western Nebraska meet. LeRov Stewart ran the 220 in 24.5, getting second place at Bridgeport. The team made a very fine record in the ScottsblutT Relays, winning three firsts and three seconds. Don Meredith came very close to a Western Nebraska record in the 440 when he ran it in 52.4 at the Mitchell invitational meet. Lettermen were: Benton, Capt. Krbes, Chavez, L. Stewart, Putman, D. The 1933 basketball season rolled around with five lettermen back: (’apt. Stewart, Putman, Strizek, B. Meredith and Taylor. Coach Young had high hopes for a winning team. Bayard took the lead in the Western Conference, and held it nearly all season, a nd as a result they went into a tie for first place, together with Minatare and Alliance. This was their second conference championship in two years. At the Western Nebraska District Tournament held at Mitchell on March 16-17-18, Bayard won the right to represent Western Nebraska at Lincoln by defeating Mitchell in the final game by a score of 18-14. At the State Tourney. Bayard was eliminated in the first round by Falls City, 32-9. Bayard placed two men on the All-Western team. Stewart at forward on the first team and Putman at guard on the second team. Three of Bayard’s men were placed on the All-Tournament team: Strizek. forward: Taylor, center, and Putman, guard. Miss Carlson is sponsor of the organization with Esther Strizek as president. Jo Loewenstein. vice president and Ruth Ollech. secretary-treasurer. The girls this year have had training in calisthenics, baseball, basket ball, tumbling and tricks and have enjoyed it very much. One of the main features of the year was the intra-mural basketball tournament. The Seniors won the championship in a hard fought game with the Juniors. Last year a system of points was organized by which girls earn points for certain sports, training rules and certain unorganized activities. Many girls received awards, a gold pin for earning six hundred points and the second award, a letter “B for twelve hundred points. S- q — —.....u ? — 15 —
