In this country, where educational opportunity for all the children of all the people has raised literacy to a higher standard than has been achieved in any other land, the schools need no apologist. Education here is evolutionary in nature, with new ideas, new concepts, new practices being introduced from year to year. There is nothing static about the American school. Better ways to bring learning to the young are always being sought and introduced. Symbolic of the ever-changing school scene is the televi- sion theme of this Oracle. Bay View is proud to have been selected as one of the schools participating in the nation- wide experiment sponsored by the Ford Foundation. But this experiment is only one of many being carried on in the school. There is no lock step in the curriculum here. Under a well- developed guidance system each student is placed according to his demonstrated ability, each is impressed with his own responsibility for learning. There is a broad curriculum-a curriculum designed to serve students of varying capacities and interests. Be it in the sciences, the humanities, the voca- tions, or the arts, there is something to interest and to chal- lenge the student. In each of these areas there are special classes which enable the student to develop his special skills to the extent of his capabilities. A dedicated faculty and a flexible curriculum make it possi- ble to serve effectively all of the children of all the people in the Bay View community. wf

Careful GUIDANCE Helps fhe Sfudenf When the Bay View High School senior has com- pleted his thirty-two credits for graduation and is ready for the next step, at work or in college, he has had the benefit of careful and continuous guidance during his four years of high school. A staff of counselors and his homeroom teacher were at all times ready to help him -to plan a logical pro- gram of studies to meet his needs, to give help if some scholastic or personal problem temporarily blocked his progress, to provide direction for his future, vocationally and academically. Even before the student left the elementary school, he prepared for his coming to high school with the assistance of members of the guidance staff. He met the counselor who was to be his special advisor during the next four years, he was given a mathematics ability test to determine his selection of high school math studies, and he planned with his counselors, and with his eighth grade teacher and parents, the course he would take in high school. MR. WILEY, Counselor Chairman Page Twenty six MR. DONDLINGER, Vice-Principal On that important day of his arrival at Bay View, he was not afraid or unsure, thanks to his pre-school coun- seling and the freshman handbook, Your First Day at Bay View High School, which he had received earlier. Instead, he was ready and happy to join the thirty or forty other freshmen who were to live and work to- gether in one homeroom during their high school years, supervised by one homeroom teacher, and guided by one class counselor. Throughout his career at Bay View he found his coun- selors and homeroom teacher a constant source of help - personally, scholastically, and vocationally. There were further tests at various times, for reading skills, aptitudes, and intelligence. There were group guidance sessions during the Wednesday life advisement periods, for discussion of acceptable school and social conduct, harmonious personal relationships, job opportunities, and other topics vital to the young person in the formative years of his life.
