The 1956 Oracle Annual presents a record of life at Bay View during the school year 1955-1956, which is only one in the forty-two years since a few pioneer teachers and students answered the bell on opening day at the new barrack high school on Russell Avenue. The story of Bay View's past is one of growth and progress. Dur- ing the years 1918 to 1922, a new building arose to crown the hill on Lenox Street. Enrollments grew until the annual roster went well beyond two thousand in the numbers who came each year to use the various opportunities for learning. At times, important crises in the history of our country brought changes to our very classrooms, as well as to the life of every boy and girl. There were distress-filled days of nation-wide depression and years when war cast heavy shadows on the lives of all. The new in education, the new in methods and equipment, made their way into our classrooms and into the curriculum through the years. A film or slide proiector now aids a class in science, history, or art, tape recorders prepare programs, electric typewriters speed the work of prospective secretaries, a course in aeronautics leads our boys to challenging careers in aviation, and especially enriched courses in English, science, history, and mathematics prepare students for competency in meeting and understanding life. The years pass and Bay View goes on, continuing in its contribution to the march of progress, enduring in its loyalties and ideals, and constant as the unflinching gaze of the gargoyles that have surveyed the varying scenes below for some forty-two years now.
