The Park . . Idle Ease end. Change . It is pleasant in spring and early summer to stretch out comfortably under thc trees that fringe the pond in Hum- boldt Park, so nearly within the shadow of the school. Nothing seems to bring on drowsiness quite so quickly as watching, through half- closed eyes, the sunlight file tered into tiny golden stars by the trees-winking sauci- ly on the barely moving water. Just as pleasant is lying on some earthy-smell- ing hill and seeing the tips of the trees seem to dip into the water and set the tiny rip- ples chasing each other from shore to shore. And all these beauties, almost a part of the school campus, are enjoyed. The green lawns lure students during their lunch periods. The lake tempts to a half hour of canoeing. The tennis nets, stretched tautly, sug- gest a swift game or two. Often on a particularly love- ly day the entire park is dot t e d with art students sketching industriously some tree or clump of bushes that strikes their eyes, or, as is more often the case, just loll- ing on the grass pretending to gaze about them in search of inspiration. The biology c l a s s e s, too, periodically swoop down on the park, very systematically, in search of Qhorrible word that seems to banish all the beauty and change the park into a vast laboratoryj bugs,'. Mem- bers of the creative writing c l a s s occasionally saunter along the winding paths, per- haps to find suggestion for a poem in a slowly opening Water lily or material for a, story in some i n c i d e n t brought to mind by the War Memorial. Thus the beauty of the park serves the school.
