COMMANDER CLIFFORD P. BARNES Commander Barnes is a native of Vllarm Springs, Georgia, and a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1951. He first served on board USS Bowan lDD-782l. Following that tour of duty he attended Submarine School and became a qualified Submariner while serving in USS Archerfish iSS-3111 from June 1953 until October 1955, when he was ordered to USS lVlenhaden lSS-3771. Following a 20 month tour in lVlenhaden, he served as Operations Officerfhlavigator aboard USS Catfish lSS-339i until August 1960 when he was ordered to USS Barbel lSS-580l as Executive Officer. In July 1963 he assumed command of USS Corporal lSS-346l. In July 1967 he was ordered to the Office of Chief of Naval Operations until April 1969 when he reported to USS Saint Paul lCA-73l as Operations Officer. Commander Barnes assumed command of the Bausell in August 1970 and was relieved as Commanding Officer by Commander J. W. Tomion in February 1972. Commander Barnes' present station is with plans and operations with the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

COMMANDER JACK W. TONIION Born in Fowlerville, Michigan, Commander Tomion was commissioned in July 1955. Prior to being commissioned, Commander Tomion received the degree of Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan. He first served aboard the USS Northhampton lCLG-1l. Upon completion of his initial sea tour in November 1958, Commander Tomion became the Assistant Liaison Officer at Vietnamese Naval Headquarters. In July 1960 Commander Tomion was assigned to the USS Leary lDDR-87Ol where he served as Operations Officer. From April 1962 until December 1963 he was Desk Officer in the Western Pacific!South Asian Branch of the Politico-Military Policy Division of the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington, D.C. Commander Tomion then joined the Staff of Commander, Middle East f0l'C9 as Aide and Flag Lieutenant. His next assignment was as Combat Information Officer aboard the U53 Chicago lCG-11l until October 1967. He then served aboard the USS Rupertus CDD-851i as Executive Officer and in May 1969 returned to Washington for a tour of duty with the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff which immediately preceded his assignment as Commanding Officer of the Bausell.

LIEUTENANT COMMANDER JOHN E.WHlTELY Jr. Lieutenant Commander John E. Whitely Jr. graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1960 and came to Bausell from duty with the Naval Advisory Group Vietnam. Prior to that he had an incredible fifty two month tour aboard the USS Floyd B. Parks lDD-884l where he served as Gunnery Officer, First Lieutenant, ASW Officer, and Weapons Officer, followed by a tour as Staff Operations Officer for Escort Squadron Five. He is a graduate of the Naval Post Graduate School, lVlonterey, Weapons Engineering Curriculum and received a Master of Science Degree in Electronics Engineering in December 1970. Lieutenant Commander Whitely relieved Lieutenant Commander Nlicheal A. Cuseo in lVlay 1972.
