The events of the '63-'64 school year are included in the pages that follow. We, the members of the Fricassee Staff, hope that you, the students, enjoy this yearbook, and use it in years to come to relive the happenings of your high school days, which are the most rewarding and cherished days of your life. We have enjoyed planning and making up your book and we do appreciate the cooperation of the administration, the faculty, and the students because without your help, we could not have done the work. SPRING SUMMER As the days become shorter, we say goodbye to Summer and plunge into the rush of activities always found at Baton Rouge High. There are roaring pep meetings, frantic drill practices, jammed halls, new knowledge, piling on wagons filled with hay, and kicking your way home through fallen leaves. FALL IS A WONDER! Winter Although there is still much excitement over football and basketball in the winter, the students seem to settle down and keep their minds on their studies. But no matter the season, the students of Baton Rouge High never lose the school spirit and stamina of which we are all so proud. Spring Spring is a season of happiness and love. All students seem to develop a new, glowing personality. Besides bringing with its sunshine, flowers and signs of nature. B.R.H.S. overall gain, compared to Jesuit's, was 208-140 with a 9-6 first down edge. In a frustrating second quarter, the Bulldogs scored with 12 seconds remaining in the quarter. The play climaxed a 65 yd. plow, begun by Glen Lorio's recovery on the B.R.H.S. 35. All in all, it was a fine Bulldog victory for the team and its fine coach, Ray Porta. After opening with an 86 yd. kick-off return, the Lions led 7-0, marking the only time they were to be in the lead. Six plays after Darrell McCardles' recovery of a Lafayette fumble in the first quarter, George Bevan scored, knotting the game at 7-7 after a PAT by Bill Nestler. The Bulldogs drove 78 yds. in the second quarter to score on Pierce's 18 yd. sprint. Later in this quarter, Roy Lively recovered a Lafayette fumble and a 39 yd. scoring pass from Stokes to Pierce marked the score 21-7, with Nestler adding the extra point. Lafayette scored twice in the second quarter but because of a blocked kick, the score remained 21-20. Baton Rouge took the second half kickoff and scored in four plays, driving 68 yds. with Stokes getting the score on a beautiful 54 yd. run. The kick was wide. The Bulldogs scored twice in the final quarter, Hugh Shelton scoring first on a one yard run and sub-quarterback Mike Glissen passing 24 yds. to Spike Pierce for the final score which was Baton Rouge High 40, Lafayette 20. When we did get the ball, however, we made the most of it, giving us a 19-7 victory. Scoring all three touchdowns, Spike Pierce brought his record up to eight for the season. Pierce over left tackle. C.H.s. Quarterback Stokes and Pierce teamed for the 54 yard pass play touchdown in the second quarter, Pierce plunging two yards for a score in the third to break a 7-7 deadlock. The tie breaking and clinching touchdowns came after Ricky Johnson, Bulldog center, recovered a Broadmoor fumble at the BRHS two and the Bulldogs were set up for their third and final touchdown. A 60 yard drive, helped by a 15 yard penalty against the Bucs and a 24 yard pass brought the ball up to the 12. George Bevan gained 6, Stokes picked up two, Bevan another one and Pierce going over left tackle for the final T.D. Baton Rouge 19, Broadmoor 7. BATON ROUGE HIGH 6 HOLY CROSS 30 Holy Cross's swift-striking land offense stunned Baton Rouge High with four first-half touchdowns, three within the first 17 minutes, as the power-packed Tigers dealt the Bulldogs a 30-6 defeat. The Bulldogs were dealt their first defeat following three victories. Even though the Tigers made only one TD in the second half, the damage had been done. Baton Rouge High put its six points on the score board with 6:50 left in the third quarter. David Stokes engineered a seven-play-55 yard drive, which he capped with a five yard rollout. Bill Nestler's conversion attempt was blocked. Final score. Baton Rouge High 6, Holy Cross 30. BATON ROUGE HIGH 27 BOGALOUSA 12 In the District 3-AAA opener at Memorial Sta- nley! The Bulldogs, contrary to other games, preferred to stay on the ground, collecting 250 yards on rush plays, 73 and 61 yards on sustained drives, and a 69 yard pass-interception return by End Darryl McCardle. David Stokes sprinted 12 yards for the first TD and 9 yards for the third TD. Stokes' fourth TD toss was a completion to Joe Womack of 32 yards. Pierce, Bevan, and Stokes collected 82, 51, and 40 yards respectively, leading the Bulldogs' ground assault which produced 14 first downs to the Jack's 11. Final score was Baton Rouge 27 and Bogalousa 12. BATON ROUGE HIGH 14 CATHOLIC HIGH 0 By scoring in the third and fourth quarters, the Bulldogs knocked out Catholic High's hopes for a District 3-AAA and city Triple-A upset here Friday night. The fifth win in six games didn't come easy for the Bulldogs. The Bruins came within 29 Uft to right: Jerry Craft, Ricky Johnson, Jimmy Case, John Crerneens (Centers) left to right: Johnny Gould. Bulldog halfback Spike Pierce, however, sprinted 23 yards and with the help of the official climaxed a 58 yard third period drive. He later intercepted a Catholic High pass late in the fourth quarter to set up the six-pointer for Hugh Shelton as the Bulldogs took the Bruins, 14-0. BATON ROUGE HIGH 19 BOLTON 0 A game which was expected to be a toss up between both teams because of a rash of Canine injuries, resulted in a seventh Bulldog victory. Spike Pierce, playing with a bandaged hand, intercepted three key passes. He also accounted for the Bulldogs' second six-point when he stepped one yard through left tackle to climax a 37 yard drive which required nine plays. The first touchdown came when Stokes made a fake to Shelton, pulled the ball back and went 55 yards around left end just 52 seconds after the Pierce sweeps around left end Pierce crashes through line, C.H.S. 43 (Wing-backs) Left to right: Butch Hclvcston, George Bevan, Joe Womack, Johnny Gregory (Ends) left to right: Darryl McCerdle, Jim Davidson, Larry Randolph, Floyd Giblin, Roy lively. The Bulldogs scored twice in the second quarter. From the 29, Stokes and Hill advanced 19 yards in three cracks at the Reb mid-section. Stokes then faked to Shelton and kept around his right side, sprinting for the corner flag. Nestler converted for a lead of 7-0. Shelton completed the second TD with a kick from Nestler bringing the score to 14-0. Pierce set up the third Bulldog marker with a 22 yard return to the Rebel 10. From two-and-a-half yards out. The Tigers scored twice in the scond quarter and added a field goal in the last quarter. It wasn't until late in the third quarter that the Bulldogs could get something going for them. In the third quarter, the Bulldogs moved on a 64 yard drive going over into the fourth quarter. Stokes started the drive with a 12 yard pass to Floyd Giblin. Shelton and Pierce added 12 more yards in efforts. Picking up two more first downs, we were finally stopped at the Tiger 18. Final score, Terrebonne 17, Baton Rouge High 0. BATON ROUGE HIGH 20 ISTROUAAA 6 A crowd of 18,500 watched the Baton Rouge High Bulldogs dethrone Istrouma's District 3-AAA championship hopes in Memorial Stadium. It was the Bulldogs' third victory in four district starts and eighth in ten games. BRHS's seven-diamond and variation of a wide-tackle six defenses did the job and contained the Indian's running game Friday night, holding the Tribe to a net of 16 yards on the ground. Except for a few passing plays, the Bulldogs seemed to know where the Injuns were going before they got there. Istrouma's only TD was concluded by a 12 yard pitch to Dousay 1:10 before the finish. BRHS's George Bevan, Roy Lively, and Spike Pierce, made interceptions, picking off three Istrouma aerials. The Bulldog attack, spearheaded by Pierce, Shelton, and Stokes grinded for 178 yards. The Bulldogs attempted seven passes including a 27 yarder to Stokes by Pierce, bringing BRHS its second TD. A 13-play drive of 55 yards brought BRHS's initial score. Not only was the win Baton Rouge High's first since 1960 but it was the widest margin in the series since 1949. Baton Rouge High now goes 45 d on as District champions in to the playoffs against the New Orleans Catholic league for state championship. Final score, BRHS—20, Istrouma—6. BATON ROUGE HIGH 6 JESUIT 22 Jesuit's Blue Jays defeated the Baton Rouge High Bulldogs in a quarterfinal Triple-A playoff game attended by a few 3000 spectators on a rainsoaked night. Baton Rouge High started out as if to make short work of their opponents, moving 63 yards in only seven plays for a score made by Fullback Hugh Shelton. The Jays quickly retaliated, completing a 16 yard play putting Jesuit in the lead. The lead was maintained by the Jays the rest of the evening. The final outcome sent the Jays on to another playoff but left the Bulldogs in the field, insofar as State Championship was concerned. Final score was Baton Rouge 6 and Jesuit 22. With the close of the football season, we walk eagerly from the field onto the BASKETBALL courts, and set our sights on the district championship. OUTSIDE the classroom, we greet with wonder the many beautiful scenes left by the North Wind and Mr. Jack Frost, who are strangers to our southern ways, but add to the beauty of a LOUISIANA WINTER. 117 118 basketball ’64 A shrieking whistle blew; a boisterous crowd and a last second field goal are all enjoyable parts cf our school year during basketball season. As the Fricassee goes to press the Bulldogs' record stands at ten wins, thirteen losses, but this by no means tells the whole story. Of the twelve defeats the Bulldogs have lost by more than 5 points in only 3 of those games. As the teams battle down to the wire we may be behind, but we do know that the Bulldogs should never be counted out. On Bullpup Day, the Sophomores came to school to get acquainted with their schedules. As the days went by, they seemed to get bolder. This year a sophomore was selected to attend the FBLA spelling contest. Many of them worked in the guidance office and library. Many took part in various organizations. There were several talented people in the Thespian plays. The members of this year's class at Baton Rouge High have proven to the upperclassmen that they can and will do their best to represent BRHS to the best of their ability. The Baton Rouge High School A Cappella Choir has toured over 5,000 miles and eleven states in the last three years. This Choir has been chosen to represent the state of Louisiana at the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D. C. and at the Battlefield of Chickamauga, Georgia. It is composed of sixty selected singers and was organized in 1959. The choir performs many times each year at local functions and has given a concert in the United States Capitol. It has made a superior at every music festival it has ever entered.
