F V N ATHLETICS BACK ROW: Ronald Cornell, Earl Stahl, Gerald Chalcraft, Robert Sharp. FRONT ROW: Kenneth McCormick, Ronald Ehrke, Roy Fritz, Richard Graves. During the fall and spring, the activity period is used for dia- mondball practice. The Junior High basketball team played 6 games during the season. They competed in the Grade Tournament at Columbia, and were the con- solation winners. The basketball team was coached by Mr. C. J. Beitelspacher. In track the grades entered the County Track meet. Entrees were Kenneth McCormick, Roy Fritz, Gerald Chalcraft, Robert Sharp, Elaine Bishop, Lois Gabel and Betty Lorenzen. The grades placed 3rd in the meet, scoring 32 points. MUSKQ l Music in the first four grades includes ear training, vocal ex- ercises, note reading, and rhythm exercises and songs. Upper grade music has included Music Appreciation this year. The text- book used was UPreludeU from the series Hhaking Friends With Iusicn. Some of the records listed in the textbook were studied very thoroughly. Vocal exercises, ear training, rhythm, note reading and solo and group singing were part of the course. More than fifty percent of all grsde school pupils studied music on some instrument in l9AO-Ll. Violin, cello, cornet, and clarinet classes were organized. Each pupil paid a small rentalpywh ' fee for the l 5355 ' X IN. A instruments. Members of these classes played solos at 5 monthly pro- ? grams, a n d l small groups played ensemble numbers. 50
