.Af-2. ' ' - , ..,..1,-...-w-x.f- The B A frA VIA N 727925 M Editorials HE old era is almost over, the new, almost begun. The new opens a new road: Mysteries to unravel, seen and unforeseen happenings and greatest of all many opportunities, a good number of which are new. We are going to love this magnilicant edifice khich we have seen rise, brick by brick, piece by piece. It will demand out utmost, we will give our utmost. We are deter- mined not to fail, not to slip a notch, to keep the torch ever burning. Finally no matter what happens, if necessary, we'll sacrihce till we bleed, we'll drain the last drop. B.I-I.S. and her representatives have always stood for the ideal-in sport, in the class room. and in other places where the character of her students may be shown. This, in its greatness, has always represented the spirit of this school. School spirit! Ho-w many times I have heard that expression used by students, alumni, teachers and friends of the school! At times during the past year it has seemed that our school spirit was shaken, tottering te a fall, but the fall never came. No, and I believe that it will never come, for that indomitable spirit which has come down to us through the years is going to have a new home, with the new year, a home where it may live and thrive better than ever before. I wish to appeal to the pride of you Freshmen, Sophomores and juniors, and especially you, my fellow Seniors, who will not have the honor of attending the new school, to strive to your utmost to keep that glowing coal, that imperish- able spark burning, and to fan it into a steady blaze which shall betoken the glory and honor of B.H.S. to the four corners of the globe. Applause, self-seeking ambition and glory, oH:ice, popularity, praise, wealth. even though they are vain rewards and bring but empty joys, all tempt and allure us. But genuine greatness manifests itself in true service, loyalty, and good will. Each one of us has his own special job to fulfill, his own task to perform, no mat- ter how humble that task may be. The torch is ours to carry on, and let our beacon light be honor, and our watchword, truth! Each smallest effort is helping all humanity, each better thought, each earnest word is kindling and keeping '-tire the spirit of democracy and helping toward the glorious universal uplift. No drop but serves the slowly lifting tide, No dew, but has an errand to some flower. No smallest star but sheds some helpful ray. What is it that Batavia lacks, complains of lacking, advertises that it doesn't possess, yet makes little effort to acquire? Spirit! Real, genuine school spirit. The spirit that wins, The spirit that makes a school unconquerable in contest. The spirit that makes a man get up and dare anyone to defy him in saying that his school, his teams, his societies are not among the best. N
