The new opens a new road: Mysteries to unravel, seen and unforeseen happenings and greatest of all many opportunities, a good number of which are new. We are going to love this magnilicant edifice khich we have seen rise, brick by brick, piece by piece. It will demand out utmost, we will give our utmost. We are deter- mined not to fail, not to slip a notch, to keep the torch ever burning. Finally no matter what happens, if necessary, we'll sacrihce till we bleed, we'll drain the last drop. B.I-I.S. and her representatives have always stood for the ideal-in sport, in the class room. and in other places where the character of her students may be shown. This, in its greatness, has always represented the spirit of this school. School spirit! Ho-w many times I have heard that expression used by students, alumni, teachers and friends of the school! At times during the past year it has seemed that our school spirit was shaken, tottering te a fall, but the fall never came. No, and I believe that it will never come, for that indomitable spirit which has come down to us through the years is going to have a new home, with the new year, a home where it may live and thrive better than ever before. I wish to appeal to the pride of you Freshmen, Sophomores and juniors, and especially you, my fellow Seniors, who will not have the honor of attending the new school, to strive to your utmost to keep that glowing coal, that imperish- able spark burning, and to fan it into a steady blaze which shall betoken the glory and honor of B.H.S. to the four corners of the globe. Applause, self-seeking ambition and glory, oH:ice, popularity, praise, wealth. even though they are vain rewards and bring but empty joys, all tempt and allure us. But genuine greatness manifests itself in true service, loyalty, and good will. Each one of us has his own special job to fulfill, his own task to perform, no mat- ter how humble that task may be. The torch is ours to carry on, and let our beacon light be honor, and our watchword, truth! Each smallest effort is helping all humanity, each better thought, each earnest word is kindling and keeping '-tire the spirit of democracy and helping toward the glorious universal uplift. No drop but serves the slowly lifting tide, No dew, but has an errand to some flower. No smallest star but sheds some helpful ray. What is it that Batavia lacks, complains of lacking, advertises that it doesn't possess, yet makes little effort to acquire? Spirit! Real, genuine school spirit. The spirit that wins, The spirit that makes a school unconquerable in contest. The spirit that makes a man get up and dare anyone to defy him in saying that his school, his teams, his societies are not among the best. Faculty Wffritefllps lNote-l, the Batavian, take this opportunity of thanlring you, the Faculty, on behalf of the Staff and Students, for your goodfellowship in adding to my contents these most interesting personal touches.l To the Class of 1923 It has been the aim of the faculty of B.H.S., during your four years' stay with us, to instill into your minds and hearts a zeal for loyalty, service, good sportsmanship and fair play. If we have been successful in our attempt, we will consider our efforts amply rewarded. Wfithout these qualities the brightest and most clever person becomes a liability rather than an asset to his community and to his nation. B.H.S. has always stood for these virtues. May all members of this class be true to the traditions of their Alma Mater. HOVVARD D. VVEBBER. Be Prepared. May this be the motto of the students of our school. Education is money well invested. Your education can not be taken from you. There are many institutions ready to receive you. Advance! Be Prepared. HERBERT T. COMFORT. To my friends, the Class of '23, ' It seems to me that there is enough brain power in this world to make its machinery go, and there are also opportunities for the special training of this intellectual acumen. But there are certain invisible qualities which I have seen in you, the lack of which wrecks civilization, truth, justice, loyalty, a fine sense of honor, the capacity for sacrifice. These are the things to which I would have you hold fast. MYRTA E. HUNN. Success to the members of the class of 1923. Success in life is not so much a matter of talent or opportunity as of concentration and perseverance. ALTA LOWE. Do not think- I will if I can, but practice- I can if I will. ANNA L. MOYNIHAN. The latchstring will always be out at the door of Room 1 for the members of the class of nineteen twenty-three. MARION H. SHORT. In character, in manners, in style, in all things, the supreme excellence is simplicity ' MAY G. SWEZEY. Life is short-too short to get everything. Choose you must, and as you choose, choose only the best-in friends, in books, in recreation, in everything. MEAME BEAL- Vaincre sans effort on triomphe sans gloire. ' ISABEL PRENTICE. EPTEMBER, 1919, marks an epoch in the history of B.H.S., for on that solemn day one hundred and forty students, fresh from the bathtub and with shining shoes and faces, entered this venerable pile. As most of them expected to graduate in four years they called themselves the class of '23. 'Early in the year they organized. Burdette Hawks was chosen first president and the vice presidency was assigned to George Boughton. Upon the youthful shoulders of Richard Ogden was placed the Financial burdens of the class, while John Barnes was selected to wield the class pen. . , The Freshmen first gained publicity by coming in second in the Senior Play ticket selling contest of 1920. They were somewhat mollified by the great party held at the Y.M.C.A. No hard drinks or feelings were permitted. The following year we returned, Freshmen no more, most of the boys with their first long pants and high collars and the girls with abbreviated skirts and hair nets. In a short time a meeting was called and the class organization took place. Weblier Young was chosen to guide us thru this eventful year with vice president Louise G. Delano as his moral support. To Anna A. Rogers was entrusted the sacred class book. Kenneth A. Henderson was given the privilege of extracting dues from his fellow classmen. A nickel receipt book sufficed him for the year. It happened that as usual the A.A. was embarrassed by the lack of the root of all evil, so a football movie benefit was undertaken and a cup offered the class selling the most tickets. Naturally we won the cup and what boy did not burst at least two vest buttons when the little tin trophy was presented. Yep, we had a banquet. The orchestra played to a full house and full stomachs. - To relieve the, monotony the Sophs won another cup for selling twice as many tickets as the rest of the school for a movie benefit to aid starving European children. Winniiig the box in the Senior Play contest was a cinch. Old Pop Time turned his wheel again so we became Juniors at the begin- ning of the third year in B.H.S. True to our slogan Carry On we carried 011 everything which had a spice of life in it besides carrying off the Freshman banner. At the beginning of the year we elected the following officers: President, Ensign Devoeg vice president, Virginia McCurdyg secretary, Dorothy McAlpineg treasurer, Warren Delano. We generously permitted the Freshmen to win the hrst ticket selling contest. . Dear Mr. Prophet: In reply to your letter asking about the welfare of those of the class of '23 I have been able to lind the following facts: I Otto Steiner was defeated for election for Mayor of Squeedunk, Ohio, by Carl Gay, champion marble performer. In Texace, Michigan, Webber Young for many years has run that notorious gambling hell, The Bowl of Blood. Only last Saturday night Ewell Stull, the daring revenue agent, entered the place and were it not for the clever wiles of Dorothy McAlpine and Lucille Hamilton the daring tight girls, Tom Canty, the owner, would have had a big fine to pay local justice Albert Duerr Webb Young has his old friends, Toni Corey, Berdie Hawks and Harold Ball, to thank for their steady patronage of his place. All three are bootleggers Nick F iglo in Georgetown has received his pastor's degree and will soon have a new church. He will be greatly aided by Tom Gannon, the fiery anti-tobaccoist in his reform work. In York, California, Ensign Devoe has a hard time ,defeating John Callahan for the office of president of the board of education which is composed of such educators as George Boughton, Lester Brown and Oliver Dietschier John Barnes, Leo- Batten and Helen Atwater are leading an expedition to prove the world is round. Two of their most fervent supporters are Robert Carr writer, and his wife, Lillian Bleur Herman Dargusch proved the old theory of gravity by dropping off the Wool worth building and just missed Bill Root, the baker boy Monday, june 4, 1932, Ray, Colorado There was a double wedding today when Cecelia Miller led Carl Eberhart to the altar and 15 minutes later Gladys Eustance had Harold Langdon in the yoke. Tony Gerace having had an organ left him has bought a monkey and now he is on the streets gathering the kids' pennies. However, I-Ioole Tagett with his dancing bear, furnishes Tony with a lot of competition and only last week Tony's wife, Charlotte O'Brien, almost killed him with a liat iron Donald Landon, Okay, Minnesota, writes his chorus girls have hit town. His chief attractions are Viola Hovey, former wife of Dick Ogden, saloon keeper Helen Lehmann, whose first husband Ed Robbins poisoned himself with Eskimo Pies. and last but not least Veronica Riggs the daring tight rope walker W :Ears . ,vw 'Lmtsi 355' The BATAVIAN IQ23 Clarke Merrltt the loud mnnstcx and lns dex out xxlfe lxnhcl VV1rc were xeu 1nd19,11 n1t ox er the tloum llNlCLLIlLN d1splnccl by thc bold hnsscs Roy RIIQSOIIII Bermce Colhster who last ueek had hex 'nms rut oif Ill Thornton Puces cheese factorx has slgned '1 tontratt to pl tx the 1ole of Venus 1n Lmdsley Crotker s famous PI'OClllLflOl'l Loxe s Old Su eet bong Undez Cahtorma Marlon Gnbb IN it'll'Il1l0' 111 '1 new pnture just 1ele'1sed by pxoduccr Abc Nl urtzman ent1tled Uncle Tom s C'llJl!1 Cr1t1cs say that Maly Bosscler s xole as llttle Ima IQ xerx eftef.t1xelx plax ed R nso Oklahoma Nlrs Delano formerly Ethel Burke of Batav1a a11d w1fe of our two gun Xlay or IVarren Delano has started a movement on foot to 2ll7Ol1Sl1 the use of Cl1Sp1ClOI'S 1n the home Loretta Crehan and Eleanor Ha1tz her two aggress v ndes hope to make th1s a natxon ulde movement Bert Tagett the toun bum wl1o poses for an1mal crackers 111 Hxlda Geloneck bakery saxs that he 1S ln strlct opposltlon to the SP1tOO11 movement Rexo Texas Paullne Gehrmg the rxch DLISIIICSS woman has secured a monopoly 111 baby carnages and scrub uoman Ruth Vmcent IS afra1d her klds w1ll be terrlbly bon legged Professor XVIIIIHHI VValters has dlscontmued g1v1ng UIUSIL lessons by tl1e request of h1s pup1ls parents Hxs spouse LOUISE Delano says she doesnt know what they are gomg to do for a hvmg WALTER DAVISON Prophet A terword am on my xx ay to press and 1n qulte a hurry but I just had to pause long enough to g1VC my readers the last word about oux prophet I have looked up all about h1m Professor Dav1son employed by '1 p1ClxlC factory as cl1em1st and I have been told by rel1able mformers that when he Wmrp th1s p1Opl'1CCy he was labormg under great mental straln He had been 1gageo for months 1n research work ndeavormg to determme the exact numbe1 ot p1ckles 1n a dozen 1n the m1dst of the arduous labor of comp111ng th1s prophenc data D2lV1SOl'l suffered a complete mental collapse and was unable to Hmsh the task It IS to be oped that th1s knowledge w1ll soften the hearts of the members of 23 so that th V may read has final document W1th less of censure for has sms of OITllSSl0l'l -'IG commxsslon and more of char1ty for h1s lamentable phght BATAVIAN '23 f -- ,,..1 , .ef-T:.......--,f.,f-,f.--m.-- - . Mr. Comfort spoke on the aid of music in bringing about good fel- lowship wherever one goes. Mr. Randall then referred to the guest of the evening as an honor to the school, his parents, and the community. McAvoy could take with him the knowledge that he had done his duty by his Alma Mater. Mr. Randall then asked McAvoy to say something to the boys- In his earnest and feeling man, ner, McAvoy said he had merely tried to do his duty by B.H.S. He had tried to put the best interests of the school always. before his personal desires.. I know I have made some enemies, but I have also made some mighty good friends. The next speaker was Miss Fowler, to whom had been assigned McAvoy's record. As it was a farewell banquet the title appeared on the program as The Vanishing Man. McAvoy is aptly described' in Robert Browning's epilogue as One who never turned his back but marched breast forward, Never doubted clouds would break, Never dreamed, though right were worsted, wrong would triumph. He will ever remain in our minds as one who was a help to everything pertaining to the honor and glory of his Alma Mater. Theiethical as well as spiritual value of music has long been accepted and now that it has a definite place in our High School course' not only as a delightful recreation Cas we have shown in assemblyj but at the same time taking rank with other school subjects in culture and Regents credit, there seems to be no limit to possibilities for the future of the subject provided there continues the interest and enthusiasm shown by this line group of boys and girls of B.H.S. Our Glee Clubs and Orchestra are permanent organizations. Then there is room not only for one orchestra but for two or more. What about our school dances in our new gym? Not one double quartet but several. Not one or two cheer leaders but song leaders as well. And our B games. We need only to prove to the community and school our need and desire and ability to do these things. The music calendar of any High School indicates a va.riety of occasions for which such org ' .t' necessary. and for our ganizaions are well nigh Now that we have the spirit and desire and ability, let us co-operate toward the highest ideals in beautiful tone, quality, and chorus singing to the end that we shall study and make possible a hne musical comedy or operetta. The co- operation of all departments including musical organizations and other depart- ments of the school will do much to give us the ideal school that we all want. MRS. It is not adieu, it is not good-bye, because me shall always have our memories of each other. The Seniors do not say good- bye to the old school building because, buried, its tomb will be in their hearts. We have laughed and played, we have carried on together, and swear that we shall continue to do so, either as active members or as alumni of B. H. S. Our one, our only regret is, that we have seen strife and sorrow enter in at the doors of our-old school building in its last days. But then-that is only the bitter-sweet of life. The only taint of farewell is a legacy left by our Seniors-sincere effort, hard work, hard play, joy in living the everyday life, fair play, a vision of truth and justice-and, always and ever, now and forever, that one fundamental, Carry On.
