As the fifth ship ofthe WASP-class multi-purpose amphibious assault ships, Bataan's mission is to enable the Navy and Marine Corps team to accomplish a seamless transition Ci . .from the seal' to the land battle. Bataan has participated in Gperation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom I and II, While supporting combat operations in both Afghanistan and Iraq. During OIF II, January-March 2004, the creW's mission Was to offload Marines from 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force C2 MEFJ, along With their equipment and ammunition, into Kuwait in order to help stabilize Iraq. In 2005, Bataan was the first U.S. Navy ship present after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast. 7 ig . 'Maw Q

Deployment in Review After six months and approximately 30,000 nautical miles, ships of the Bataan Expeditionary Strike Group CESGJ, led by the multi-purpose amphibious assault ship USS Bataan CLHD SJ, re- turned to their home ports July 3. Bataan serves as the flagship of the Bataan Expeditionary Strike Group CESGJ, which is comprised of the Bataan Strike Group, commanded by Captain Pete Fanta, Commander, Bataan Strike Group!Amphibious Squadron CPHIBRONJ 2, and the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit CMEUJ based out of Camp Lejeune, N.C., commanded by Col. Gregg Sturdevant. Bataan Strike Group includes PHIBRON 2, Bataan, USS Shreveport CLPD 121, USS Oak Hill CLSD 511, USS Vella Gulf CCG 725, USS Nitze CDDG 945, USS Underwood CFFG 365, and USS Scranton CSSN 7561. The ships of the ESG departed their home ports Jan. 4, and began a regularly-scheduled six-month deployment in support of Maritime Operations CMOJ and Theatre Security Cooperation QTSCJ efforts in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet Areas of Operations CAOOJ. While in the U.S. 6th Fleet AOO, Bataan and PHIBRON 2 enjoyed port visits in Palermo, Sicily, and Marmaris, Turkey. Sailors and Marines aboard Bataan safely completed their south-bound transit through the Suez Canal in late January, and entered the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command CCENTCOMJXUS. 5th Fleet AOO. There, Bataan stayed busy, providing support for several MEU and joint Navy!Marine Corps exercises. Bataan was off the coast of Djibouti for exercise Image Nautilus, Kenya for Edged Mal- let, Qatar for Eastern Maverick, and Kuwait for MEU sustainment training. Additionally, the Bataan ESG joined with carrier strike groups also deployed to the region to form an Expeditionary Strike Force to demonstrate U.S. presence. The mighty warship stopped for port visits in Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates and Manama in the Kingdom of Bahrain. While off the Horn of Africa, Bataan crossed the Equator and had a crossing-the-line ceremo- ny to initiate a ship full of pollywogs into King Neptune's realm. Bataan also moored in Jordan for exercise Infinite Moonlight and liberty missions in support of TSC Ships of the Bataan Strike Group completed their north-bound transit through the Suez Canal in early June, concluding operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet AOO. Upon return to 6th Fleet, Bataan, Shreveport and the 26th MEU supported the Secretary of Defenseis visit to France for Normandy remembrance ceremonies. Bataan also helped provide security for the President of the United States' visit to Albania. The final stop for Bataan was at Naval Station Rota, Spain, where the crew, along with the crews of Oak Hill and Shreveport, and the 26th MEU, worked diligently to prepare the ships and the MEU for their return to the United States. The crew of the mighty warship was also able to enjoy some liberty at their final port visit of the deployment. With the number of exercises and operations that the ESG completed, one thing that stayed a strong focus throughout the deployment aboard Bataan was the upkeep of training and qualifications. During the deployment, Bataan Sailors earned nearly 3,000 new damage control qualifications and 483 new Maintenance and Material Management qualifications. A total of 282 Sailors earned their Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist qualification and 281 earned their Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist qualification. After successfully crossing the Atlantic Ocean, Bataan stopped in North Carolina, offloaded 26th MEU personnel and equipment, and brought aboard friends and family members for an over- night tiger cruise before returning to Naval Station Norfolk. 9
