SENIOR DELEGATES The Senior Delegates, representatives from each senior home room, transacted all business during the senior year. At regularly scheduled meetings, under the leadership of class advisor Mrs. Helen McHugh, the delegates discussed the suggestions of the represented home rooms. It was the responsibility of the Senior Delegates to count the votes of class elections, plan the class trip, organize senior activities, and boost homeroom spirit. We owe our sincere thanks to Mrs. McHugh and the Senior Dele- gates for making our senior year a memorable one. v f Q 32' ' CLASS Dear Class of '59, It was over one hundred years ago that a group called The Forty- niners set out to find gold. Today, a group known as The FIFTY- NINERS is ready to start on its way to seek fame and fortune. It leaves a historic record in the halls of Bassick High School. It was during the Sophomore Class Party that we discovered we had talent ranging from pantomime to singing and soft shoe. Nina Culetsu, Donna Johnson, Joe Bernard, Kathi Steene, Kathy Lehmann, Barbara Cone, Janet Taylor, and Diana Roy were just a few of our talented per- formers. As juniors we blinded the sophomores and freshmen with our new rings, and on Class Day we proudly paraded as official seniors. It was during this year also that the girls of the Class of '59 walked 05 with the most votes for the best song and cheer on All Girls' Day. We certainly were proud of ourselves. The class trip was different for the first time in a good many years. Instead of the annual trip to West Point, we spent the day at Happy Acres. Those who were daring enough to venture into the icy water went swimming, while the rest of us played tennis and shuliieboard or just lis- tened to the latest tunes coming from the jukebox. A hot steak sandwich certainly hit the spot with us on that cool June 7. Martha McCauley brought fame to Bassick and the class of '59 when she won the city-wide Voice of Democracy Contest. She presented her tro- phy to Miss Gallahue, Acting-Principal of Bassick, during our class assem- bly. In the fall of our senior year we met Mr. Bernard Shapiro, our new Principal, and Miss Mary Louise Rafferty, our Dean of Girls. Our turkey dinner definitely tasted better after our victory in the annual Thanksgiving Day game this year. That was a very happy occasion for Bassick students AND the football team, as co-captains Tony Wiencko 1, I 48 ,5' -.' .A A ' P ,355 I H ,- af, A 5445.2 g :hw , ' ' ,175 'JN' 'B-in ' Lawn Irina! Q' HISTORY The Lion's Den Bassick High School June 5, 1959 and John Olson led the Lions to a ROARING 18-12 victory over Roger Ludlowe. It was after that game that Tony, Bassick's great passing quarter- back, was selected to the All-District team by the M.B.I.A.C. coaches. Ron Millard, Eileen Bjorken, and Betsy Ruoss made Clark Gable, Joan Bennett, and Kim Novak look like amateurs as they really put on a performance at the Senior Play, Time Out for Ginger. The annual Mothers' Tea was well-attended-as the clean up com- mittee will tell you. Many mothers were pleasantly surprised to see how effectively their daughters arranged and served a lovely tea. Our Key Club, under the direction of Mr. William Haffner, did another fine job this year filling baskets for the needy at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Lester Lanin had nothing on our Bassick Sophisticats who presented some great music at our Bassick-Fairfield hop and other dances. The Senior Prom, the highlight of all school social events, exceeded our expectations, and we all had an exciting evening. Class Day, the last official school day for the seniors, arrived, and everybody duded up and paraded the halls, signing Yearbooks and saying last farewells to the teach- ers. After Class Day exercises, the long-awaited moment came-GRADUA- TION! The Senior Choir, under the direction of Mrs. Lilyan Zigun, gave a most magnificent performance. Handkerchiefs and tissues were much in evidence as tears flowed copiously. The reason? Four years of hard work, dashing into class at the last second, working all evening on a homework assignment and finding out the next day that it was the wrong one, and for some of us, sitting in detention because of a misdeed. As we look back, it was all in good fun and we really enjoyed ourselves. Our trials, tribulations, laughter, and joys have enabled us to reach another goal in our lives, and we leave Bassick with fond memories! There's not much more to say except that we have the greatest group of guys and gals anybody could ask for, and we'll be looking forward to the class reunion in 1964! SENIOR PLAY A girl on the football team! Ridiculous! Who is this girl? She's Ginger Carol, wonderfully portrayed by Betsy Ruoss, in the Class of '59's presenta- tion of Time Out for Ginger, directed by Miss Mae McNulty. Ginger's father,.played by Ron Millard, is an understanding football enthusiast. Mrs. Carol, Eileen Bjorken, expects Ginger to be as lady-like as her two sisters- joan, played by Mary Ann Gniadekg and Jeannie, Martha McCauley. Gin- ger's non-athletic boyfriend, Tommy Green, played by Jim Pavliscak, and Jean's athletic boyfriend, Eddie Davis, played by Ed Kelly, add to the en- joyment of the situation. Some offer stu- dents recognition for outstanding scholastic achievement. Others offer students an opportunity to perform services for the school, to display and develop talents, and to pursue hobbies and special interests. Still others supplement classroom learning or prepare students for their chosen vocation. All, however, help the students to grow in leadership, responsibility, and a spirit of cooperation with others. The Student Council, under the direction of Mr. Sidney Goldstein, is a dy- namic organization devoted to student government at Bassick. It is the job of the Council to express student opinion on various school issues. Led by Ronald Millard, the Student Council, composed of all homeroom presidents, discussed and voted on many new proposals this year. SCHOLARSHIP-LEADERSHIP ii i if ,ieriit Among the organizations at Bassick which are designed to recognize high achievement is Scholarship-Leadership. Members, only juniors and seniors, must have attained an average of eighty percent, must have demonstrated leadership ability, and must have been elected by their classmates to receive Scholarship- Leadership pins. At an awards assembly this year, Mr. Bernard Shapiro presented silver pins to five percent of the junior Class and gold pins to five percent of the Senior Class. The lucky recipients may wear their pins for one year, at the end of which the pins must be retumed. At graduation, outstanding seniors are awarded gold pins which may be kept permanently. ww fb ... In February, eleven juniors and twenty-four seniors were in- ducted into the Society, previously composed of thirteen members. During the year, the Society, under the guidance of Miss Miriam Mallay, sponsored a very successful sale of Thanksgiving corsages and a donut sale. With these funds the Bassick Chapter of the National Honor Society set a no- table precedent - a reception in the school library for the new members and their parents on the evening of their induction to the Society. USHERS' GUILD The Ushers' Guild, under the guidance of Miss Helen Ferriter, is both an honor and a service organization. Its members are junior and senior girls who have attained an honor average. At the first meeting of the year, the girls elect a senior as head usher and a junior as assistant head usher. It is their duty to see that enough girls have volunteered their services for every assignment. The Ushers' Guild serves at both school and community affairs. U. S. HISTORY DEBATING CLUB The Debating Club, under the direction of Miss Marie B. Cooney, meets bi-monthly to debate topics of current interest. Membership is open to all seniors studying United States history. At each meeting the Club first plans its next debate, chooses a topic, and appoints two teams. After this, the debate for that meeting is presented. Such controversial and timely topics as the voting privilege for eighteen-year-olds, the effectiveness of U.S. foreign policy in the Berlin Crisis, legalized gambling, and the Supreme Court decision on segregation were discussed this year. Debating Club forces students to be aware of current issues and to be able to defend a point of view with forceful, logical reasons. YEARBOOK STAFF The Voice Literary Staff published tive issues of the Bassick Voice this year. The Voice, directed by Mr. Bernard Siller, also entered the 35th annual contest for school publications, sponsored by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The financial half of the newspaper is handled by the Voice Business Staff. For the third consecutive year, the ad space was oversubscribed, thanks largely to Co-Salesmen of the Year, Barbara Graham and Maureen Shea. This year several members of the Yearbook Staff, organized in early Octo- ber, attended the Connecticut Scholastic Press Association Conference, at which they heard discdssions on organization, layout, and criticisms of yearbooks. This trip helped to bring new ideas to the 1959 Voice. 9l First row, l.-r. GIRLS' ATHLETIC LEADERS' ASSOCIATION The G.A.L.A., under the supervision of Mrs. Myrtle Humphreys, has pro- vided many interesting and varied activities for the girls at Bassick. The pro- gram has included horseback riding, tennis, hiking, soccer, bowling, swimming, and basketball, all of which the girls have enjoyed greatly. Two initiations proved to be highlights of the year's activities. Other popular events were Sports' Night, in which both students and faculty participated, and All Girls' Day, at which the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes competed in song, cheer, and comedy athletic events for the judges' votes.
