They recognize the principle that the ultimate responsibility for the mainten- ance of high standards of education lies with the citizenry of the community. We graduates would like them to know that their fine efforts and accomplish- ments have been greatly appreciated by us throughout our three years at Bassick. To these citizens, as a token of our sincere appreciation, we, the Class of 1954, dedicate our yearbook. MR FRIEDRICH G ROTH Pr1nC1pal 4 MISS HELEN LOCKWOOD Assistant Principal MISS MARY I. SENIOR DELEGATES The Senior Delegates, pictured above, form the steering committee of the Class of 1954. These delegates, a boy and a girl from each senior home room, meet regularly with their class advisor, Mrs. Rose Iodice, and the six senior officers. At these meetings they discuss all impending class business, plan for future activities, and report any ideas and suggestions from the students in their home rooms. They must also report back to the home rooms just what transpired at the meetings. In this way everyone in the Senior class is well informed as to current happenings in Bassick. Another important duty of these delegates is to collect class dues, because it is from these dues that all class expenditures are met. With so much work entailed in making 1954 the successful year that it was, a great vote of thanks must be given to Mrs. Iodice and the Senior Delegates. 14 17 A44 Robert Namlan Presldent CLASS ADVISOR Frank Herrera Treasurer SENIOR OFFICERS or THE CLASS or ,54 Deborah Bogm V1ce Presldent Robert Mark Co Dlrector SG Johanna Olayos Secretary MRS ROSE IODICE Loxs Johnson Co Dlrector '17 CLASS OF 1954 PROPHECY Early one mornrng rn 1974 Robert S Namran was gently awakened by the affectronate krss of hrs St Bernard In a keg around the dogs neck was Bobs breakfast a gallon of Errckson Orange Jurce Bob nodded a sleepy greetmg to hrs valet Walter Bendrk who then turned the knob of Bob s most cherrshed antrque an authen trc 1954 radro The Drck DeSant1 Culture Hour opened wrth Joan Matey s latest composrtron Bebop on the Rhme Followmg thrs beautrful rendrtron by D Leroy Rrce famous concert vlolrnrst Namran and valet patrently lrstened to Good mornrng everyone thrs rs Jrm Krnsella, your frrendly announcer Drd you know that rn a recent natronwlde survey rt was drscovered that 99 out of 100 hrgh school puprls used Andy Prppas admrt slrps9 Just send us a sample of your prrncrpals handwrrtrng and twenty five cents rn corn and Andy wrll personally forge a very reasonable facsrmrle And now Gabbmg wrth Gabler Great thrngs are happenrng rn the socral world today' Betty Erhardt Vanderbrlt out standrng woman of the year rs havrng her annual luncheon brrdge at the Floordorf Astorra thrs afternoon Promment women attendrng are Jean Benjamrn Nobel Prrze Wrnner for her lrshed by Davrdson Dober and Dlukenckl Bar bara Soloff sensatronal new opera star and those great UN 1nterpreters Ann McNerl and Margre Fenrck And now the latest news from Hollywood Renowned movre producer Jack Blowers has made a new drscovery rn the per sonage of allurmg Grace Moore Sensatronal new Romeo of Davrd Hartmans latest release rs Gary Engler By the way we understand that Eleanor Palmesr has Just been appomted make up artrst for Metro Greenwood Mayer at a fabulous salary And now a word from our sponsor Lerners lrttle gym surts Wrll fill your hearts wrth glee And at Basslck Hrgh School They re a necessrty' Thrs IS Pat Schmrdt brrngrng you your morn rng sport news The world of athletrcs rs rn a turmorl Under the expert coachrng of Frank Chrrsty Bassrcks mrghty eleven has won the state football champronshrp An all rubber tennrs racket has just been mtroduced by Arnre Fagan 1974 wrnner of the Carr Cup Incr dentally we have just recerved news from our portable rowboat that Arthur Abramowrtz has Just swum the ragrng Rooster Rrver And now a few chosen words from a well chosen sponsor Is thrs Jrttery Jet age gettmg you down? SE IOR PLAY Bassick's most talented seniors were on stage the night of December 4, to present the gay, romantic comedy, Take Care of My Little Girl. The plot was a sarcastic tale of life in a college sorority house. Liz Erickson, skillfully portrayed by Betty Lee Baum, had a taste of this life and found it cruel and shallow. After a brief romance joe - Peter Venman. All the performers under the expert direction of Miss Mae McNulty, were excellentg Ann McNeill as the clothes-conscious Dallas, and Marylyn Tomancak as the intellectual Casey were particularly outstanding. Many faculty members and students worked very hard backstage to make this production the suc- cess that it was. SE IOR MOTHER ' TEA Tiny dolls dressed in caps and gowns daintily brought out the theme of the Sen- ior Mothers' Tea - Graduation. On Feb- ruary 17, the library was filled with over one hundred mothers, who, from the friendly hum of conversation, seemed to be enjoying themselves a great deal. Each mother received her name tag, appropri- ately shaped like the graduation mortar board, and was graciously welcomed by Mrs. Rose Iodice and the class ollicers. The delicious food prepared by the senior girls was arranged at one end of the library. Judy Berry, general chairman of the tea, acted as mistress of ceremonies and intro- duced the excellent entertainment. There were vocal solos by June August, Mary Jane Dicku, and Dolores Lojog and a piano solo by Joanne Bovick. A pleasant back- ground of piano music was provided throughout the tea by our own very tal- ented Joan Mat'-y. ix 4-xA' 51: ' - REU IG PACT Havlng spent three memorable years together at Basslck we members of the Class of 1954 pledge our selves to meet ln reunlon five years hence ln 1959 The reunlon commlttee conslstlng of the class officers shall 1nform all class members of the tlme and place of thls meeting It IS our slncere hope that all members rega dless of resldence SOC1al pos1t1on to reaffirm the bonds of fr1endsh1p whlch we here have formed Although we do not know what awa1ts us durmg the next five years we leave Basslck Wlth hope and falth ln a peaceful frlendly world that w1ll be free from all prejudlce and hate We the officers of the Class of 1954 promlse to fulfill the terms of th1s pact Presxdent Robert Nam1an V1ce Presxdent Deborah Bogm Secretary Johanna Olayos Treasurer Frank Herrera Curl Co D1rector Lo1s Johnson Boy Co Dlrector Robert Mark 63 , - , . 7 7 , T . , . .. , or occupation, alone or with husband or wife, will unite 7 7 9 ! I -'N 13 ? -, K ,, 'x ' GERMAN CLUB Under the supervision of Mrs. Pearl Roberts, Der Deutsche Verein, or, as it is more commonly called, the German Club, has had an extremely successful year. The officers of this organization are as follows: Richard Coburn, president, Germaine Paul, vice president, joan Matey, secretary, and Werner Vogeler, treasurer. At the monthly meetings of this club, the members are introduced briefly to the culture and customs of the German people whose language they study in the classroom. Aside from the educational features of this organization, it has a varied social program, which has made it especially enjoyable to the enthusiastic students of German. One of the events of the year was a trip to a local German restaurant for a typically German meal. At another time, the members gathered at the house of their club secretary for a delightful picnic. The food for this affair was that national German dish wurst and saurkrautf' First row, l. to r.: Irene Lebedowicz, joan Rastas, Joan Matey, Werner Voegler, Richard Coburn, Germaine Paul, Mary Pelle, Sylvia Kochiss, Carol Frocherback, Margaret Linkewitz. DRAMATIC CLUB All the Bernharts and Barrymores of Bassick High are represented in the popular Dramatic Club. Their talent is displayed in the dramatic assemblies and - most important of all, in the Senior and Spring Plays. Although there is always much excitement and nervousness backstage on the night of a production, thanks to the expert coaching and confidence of Miss Mae McNulty, the Dramatic Club advisor, every Bassick play is a great success. Moreover, the members of the Dramatic Club insist that they have twice as much fun putting on the play as the audience has watching it. Officers of this active organization are president, Philip Swaimg vice president, Joan Berkowitz, secretary, Penny Pilottig and treasurer, Nancy Buckhout. The Dramatic Club is open to the mem- bers of all classes, and many a thespian who had only a tiny part in some produc- tion in his or her sophomore year has become the star of the evening as a senior. 77 Q1- First row, l. to r.: Mary Lika, Lucy Spigarola, Carol Nerkowski, Rosalie Hall, Ellen Brown, Lola Munson, Elsie Alberghini, Loretta Bedini, Ann Oreski, Eileen Gay, Marilyn Fisher, Bernice Wakely, Gail Dean. LIBRARY SQ AD Bassick's Library Squad is one of the most valuable and important school organizations. Under the direction of Miss Mary Killian, its members assume the responsibilitiy of carrying out all the administrative duties necessary to run a library smoothly and efficiently. However, although there are always members of the squad in the library from opening to closing, they know that they must counterbalance their work with an active and well-planned social program. Among events which the Library Squad enjoyed during the past year were a Thanksgiving Party, a banquet, and a spring picnic. There was also the Annual Induction Tea for new members held after their training period was over. It was at this tea that the new girls received their pins. Officers of the Library Squad are president, Elsie Alberghinig vice president, Loretta Bedinig secretary, Elaine Boscainig treasurer, Eleanor Van Kovicsg and social directors, Ellen Brown and Anna Oreski. 78 ORCHE TRA Under the painstaking direction of Mr. Stephen Gaspar, the Bassick High orchestra has risen far above the ranks of the ordinary high school ensemble. Its tones are clear, its performance smooth, and the music well selected. The frequent orchestra rehearsals are compensated by the excellent showing this group makes whenever it performs. Some of the most outstanding events on the orchestral calendar are the school assemblies, the Spring Concert, and the Senior and Spring Plays. At these last two productions, the orchestra provides incidental music between the acts. Led by student director, Joanne Bovick, the orchestra seems to get better at every performance and brings much credit upon Bassick. This success can be directly traced to the old adage that Practice makes perfect. Certainly this organization of talented musicians rates high in the list of Bassick's extra-curricular activities. L. to r.: Allan Aaron, Orlandus Briley, Mark Gross, William Thielen, Stanley Lessler, Stephen Raffel, Carol Drew, Isabel Laracuenta, Nancy Banks, jerry Mangines, Seth Weingarten, Joanne Bovick, Elizabeth Bray, Mr. Stephen Gaspar, Katherine Merrit, Marvin Lebowsky, Robert Babycos, Roger Hathaway, Jack Carpenter, Lilli Rogers, Vincent Yurksaitis, Frank Herrera, Paul Leninger, Timothy Kline. SCHOLARSHIP-LEADERSHIP The juniors and seniors pictured above make up one of the most distin- guished and exclusive organizations in Bassick. These students have been selected by their classmates to receive the coveted Scholarship-Leadership pin. They were chosen on the basis of their excellent scholastic records and their outstanding leadership abilities. In the middle of October, at an extremely impressive assembly, Mr. Roth presented silver pins to five per cent of the junior class, and gold pins to five per cent of the senior class. These pins many be worn by the recipients for only one yearg at the end of that time the pins must be returned. On the final night of graduation, permanent gold pins are presented to worthy seniors. Truly a holder of a Scholarship-Leadership pin may feel justly proud and honored that his fellow classmates esteem him so highly. These pins are donated by the members of the United Civics Clubs of Bridgeport, who realize the tremendous need for training leaders and scholars. SCENIC ARTISTS Though the Scenic Artists never come in front of the footlights to take their well deserved bows, their talents are vital to the success of all Bassick's dramatic productions. These students work not only during their art classes, but after school as well to make sure that the Christmas Assembly has an appropriate background or that the color scheme for the Senior Play set is satisfactory. Mr. Henry Walsh, head of Bassick's art department, supervises this group and is always ready with some constructive criticism or a helpful suggestion. The mem- bers of the Scenic Artists, besides doing their invaluable part to foster school spirit, gain excellent experience in the field of stagecraft - experience which will stand them in good stead later in life. Bassick's thanks go to this fine crew of artists whose expert settings add immeasurably to the atmosphere of the annual productions. LE CERCLE FRANCAI Le Cercle Francais is one of Bassick's most popular clubs. It has fifty active members who participate in the monthly meetings. The oiiicers are president, Susan Schwartzg first vice president, Judy Nelson, secretary, Alice Hartleyg and treasurer, Betsy Buckhout. Social chairmen are Judy Sagarin, Anna Kaku, and Dianne Creaturo. Under Miss Miriam Cohen's guidance, French Club mem- bers have derived great benefits from this organization. One of the outstanding activities of the year was a trip to New York to see the Ballet de Paris, starring Leslie Caron. Naturally everyone who was fortunate enough to be part of this group enjoyed the performance immensely. There was also the annual picnic at which the members played basketball and baseball, sang French songs, and ate hot dogs and French fried potatoes. 82 STAGE CREW The Stage Crew always lives up to Bassick tradition by doing a Lion's share of work. Its members are always on hand to do whatever is necessary to insure the success of any Bassick activity. To enumerate just a few of their many duties and responsibilities, they operate the projectors for classroom and assembly movies, they are in charge of all the backstage mechanics, such as pulling the curtain, ringing the doorbell, etc.g for all the Bassick plays and productionsg and they are always at hand to bring on and remove chairs at assemblies. For this last feat, the stage crew can always be assured of a generous round of applause from the audience. Mr. Warren Brown sponsors this group, and its student officers are Paul Brown, foremang Bob Ruge, vice foreman, and Don Sabo, yeo- man. L. to r.: Fjed Kunesch, John Casey, james Dowling, Robert Ruge, Paul Brown, Bernard Hanlen, Donald Sabo, Robert Samwald, Vincent DeLeon, Mr. Warren Brown. ORDER OF BASSICK SECRETARIES The Order of Bassick Secretaries is one of the school's most highly esteemed organizations. Its members, as the name would imply, are all in the secretarial course, and they have gained entrance into this group by evidencing excellent scholastic records. The O. B. S., as it is usually called, is further limited by accepting only seniors. The ten 1954 initiates charmed the school with their adorable little diplomas and caps on initiation day. The officers of this group are president, Ruth Tiffany, vice president, Sophie Hallasg secretary, Patricia Shorrock, and treasurer, Janet Starr. Miss Elaine Cooper, advisor of the O. B. S., graciously opened her home for the first meeting of the year. At another meeting, the girls heard a speaker discuss interior decorating, and the social program included a very enjoyable day in New York. FUT RE TEACHERS OE AMERICA The Future Teachers of America, as the name indicates, is an organization of students who plan to enter the teaching profession. Miss Mary jane Gallahue, dean of girls, is the sponsor of the Bassick chapter. The diversified program of this group offers its members the opportunity to get acquainted with the require- ments and the type of work of their chosen vocation. As part of this plan, the members participate in discussions, listen to guest speakers from various Teachers Colleges, and actually spend time observing the methods of selected elementary school teachers. The F.T.A. annually sponsors a cake sale and a spring tea to which they invite future teachers from the various schools in the country. The officers of this organization are president, Harvey Pauling vice presi- dent, Jean Heanue: secretary, Virginia Schultz: treasurer, Mona Faulknerg social chairmen, Ruth Hoffman and Elsie Alberghini. 85 COMBINED CHORUS Under the direction of Miss Grace Laing, the chorus is one of Bassick's most outstanding organizations. Although the members of the chorus sing primarily for their own amusement and enjoyment, they do present a number of performances during the year. Their appearances, such as at the Christmas Assembly and at Class assemblies, are always loudly and deservingly acclaimed. In the middle of April selected members of the choruses, together with the Choir and the other musical organizations presented their annual Spring Concert - a truly memorable event. The Girls' Chorus also planned and took part in the tableaux for the Chanukah pageant at the Klein Memorial in early December. Many members of the chorus were fortunate enough to be among the group from Bassick who went to the Metropolitan Opera House to hear a performance of La Boheme. CHESS CLUB The Bassick High Chess Club is the source of some of the best chess players in Connecticut. Having captured the League Championship of Southern Con- necticut, for 1953, the Chess Team also won all of its 1954 matches with such teams as Stamford, Central, and East Norwalk. By scoring over twenty succes- sive victories, Bill Bakosi, captain of the Chess team has broken the all-time Bassick record for consecutive wins. The other members of the Chess Team are John Halsey, Robert Kursman, Stanley Lessler, and joseph Zuckerman. As all the members of the team are underclassmen, with the exception of the captain, the team can look forward to a very bright future. The entire Chess Club meets every Tuesday after school with its sponsor, Mr. Albert Fleischer, to play prac- tice games, and to go over the rules, regulations, and stratagies of this intriguing game. Bill Bakosi also acts as president of the Chess Club, and Susan Schwartz is secretary. All the members learn to appreciate the line points and mental stimu- lation of this ancient game. Seated, l. to r.: Ronald Burde, Jean Lucas, William Bakosi, Susan Schwartz, john Halsey, Gerald Breiner, john Barabas, Alexander Dobieski, Rita Golden. Standing: Howard Davidson. STUDE T COUNCIL The Student Council, the student governing body in the school, is an out- standing example of democracy in action. The Council is made up of the presi- dents of each home roomg and through these representatives, all Bassick students have a voice in Bassick's rules, regulations, and activities. One of the chief pro- jects of the 1954 Council was the newly inaugurated plan of Freshmen and Sophomore Orientation. These plans included the distribution of informative booklets to all Bassick newcomers, guided tours of the school, and a welcoming assembly, at which three upper-classmen told the assembled students of the benefits to be derived from their years at Bassick. The Student Council also sponsored the popular Rebel Ramble to supplement the athletic fund, and completed the collection for the 'purchase of a plaque to honor the Bassick war dead of World War II. The officers of the Council, who worked closely together with Mr. Earl Brown, faculty advisor, are Frank Herrera, president, Susan Schwartz, vice president, Bob Namian, treasurer, and Nancy Roda, secretary. AKE-UP QUAD Behind the scenes of Bassick's plays and assemblies, the Make-up Squad is hard at work transforming normal Bassickites into grey-haired matrons or little five-year-olds. These girls meet bi-monthly with Miss Florence Huntress to learn the fine points of applying make-up for stage and normal wear. In the course of these activities they also learn a great deal about a number of cosmetics and their uses. As one of the highlights of the year, the club traveled to New York, where they saw a famous Broadway production. In this painless manner they learned a first hand lesson in the art of make-up. Officers of the Make-Up Squad are Eleanor Palmesi, presidentg Grayce Horvath, vice presidentg Marjorie Volkening, secretaryg and Aracelis Velazquez, treasurer. 89 5' , M Tl First row, 1. to r.:- Elaine Plukas, Barbara Chasse, Marie Barbien, Eileen Murray, Pat Doley, Joan Wells, Georgia Paulos, ,Iacquiline Coburn, Marietta Schwickert, joan Tassinero. UNIOR RED CROSS One of the most hard working of Bassick's extra-curricular organiza- tions is the Junior Red Cross. Its duties are of the utmost importance, and the ideals for which it stands are inspiring. The National Red Cross was founded ninety years ago to combat and alleviate the miseries and hardships which accompany all disasters from full-scale wars to fires and floods. Bassick's junior Red Cross has its small but important part to perform as part of this national organization. Red Cross delegates represent every home room in the building, and, under the enthusiastic leadership of Miss Joan Dougherty, send out Christmas boxes and many other gifts to unfortunate and disabled children. Through its annual school-wide collection, every Bassickite can, and usually does, become a member of the American Red Cross. 90 VOICE LITERARY STAFF The excitement and hard work of publishing our school newspaper centers around the Voice Literary StaH. Each year Miss Barbara Ciglar, faculty advisor of the Bassick Voice, selects the most promising and capable writers in the journalism Club for mem- bership on the Literary Staff. All the members of this staFf are experienced juniors and seniors. It is their duty to write, correct, and rewrite all the articles for the paper. As the deadline for the paper nears, the students on the staff can be seen busily interviewing pupils and faculty, hunting for school news, and peeking around corners in a perpetual search for gossip. After the deadline closes, the group must correct the galley proofs and write those last minute fillers. Heading the 1954 stat? are Rita Golden, Editor-in-Chiefg Debby Bogin, Feature Editorg and Seth Weingarten, Sports Editor. Seated, l. to r.: Robert Kursman, Rita Golden, Seth Weingarten, Deborah Bogin, Judy Nelson. Standing: Susan Schwartz, Judy Sagarin, Arthur Schipul, Barbara Esner, Patricia Siller. '--- ,, pn U. S. HISTORY DEBATING CLUB The Debating Club has always been one of Bassick's most lively extra- curricular activities. This club meets twice a month after school with Miss Marie Cooney to discuss and debate some of the important issues of the day. Most of the debaters are seniors in Miss Cooney's history classes, and they are very conscious of current events and public questions. Two of the most lively debates of the season were Resolved: that the curfew for children under fourteen should be rigidly enforced and one on McCarthyism. A question and answer period follows each debate, and earnest Bassickites can be found quietly for not so quietlyj discussing the topic long after the meeting has been adjourned. Officers of the Debating Club are president, Roger Lerner, vice president, Jane Hathaway, secretary, Barbara Sololfg and treasurer, William Stansfield. Besides providing enjoyment for all its members, this organization offers invaluable experience in the art of debating and argument. A CAPPELLA CHOIR The A Cappella Choir, directed by Miss Grace Laing, is one of Bassick's pride and joys. This group of sixty selected vocalists is known throughout the school and throughout the city for its excellent performances. The choir sings at many important functions during the school year, such as the Christmas Assembly, the Spring Concert, and the All-City Choir Festival in December. In March the group traveled to Hamden, Connecticut to display their talents before a panel of very experienced judges. As usual the Bassick Choir received very favorable notices. Much hard work goes into the perfection of the Choir's repetoire, and they meet every day for intense rehearsal. Whenever the A Cap- pella Choir, impressively garbed in their traditional maroon robes, step before an audience, one may be assured that they will be enthusiastically received. Officers of the choir are president, Ray Johnson, vice president, Audrey Teschg secretary, Ann McNeil, and treasurer, Frank Herrera. 93 5 vi NATIONAL HONOR S OC I E TY First row, I. to r.: Ann Sugden, Carol Bowns, Marietta Schwickert, David Hartman, Judy Nelson, Debby Bogin, Martin Levin, Susan Schwartz, Margaret Fenick, Jane Hathaway. ATIO L HO OR SOCIETY Membership in the Bassick chapter of the National Honor Society is one of the highest achievements a worthy Bassickite can attain. The members of this select group have not only demonstrated their outstanding scholastic ability, but also have proved themselves to possess three other important qualities- those of character, leadership, and service. Officers of this group are president, Martin Levin, vice president, Debby Boginq secretary, Judy Nelson, treasurer, David Hartman. Guided by Miss Rose Costa, the Honor Society planned and enjoyed an active social program for the year. Included in their list of activities were a very successful candy sale and the annual spring picnic. This picnic was, as always, one of the highlights of the year. In the middle of February, the group, with Audrey Tesch as chairman, held its solemn and impressive Induction Ceremony. At that time properly qualified juniors and seniors were received into membership. 94 FUT RE URSES OF AMERICA The Future Nurses of America is composed of those girls who plan to study nursing after their graduation from high school. This organization meets on the third Monday of each month with Miss Olive Donnelly, Bassick's very popular school nurse, to talk over career plans and to obtain practical views of dillerent aspects of the nursing profession. In this light the members this year especially enjoyed lectures given by registered nurses, and their visits to the municipal hospitals where many of them will take their training. The annual social calendar of the F.N.A. included a Christmas party, a cake sale, and a spring picnic. This year, for the first time, the girls received official F.N.A. pins. The oflicers of this group are Suzanne Kirk, presidentg Grace Tvardzik, vice president, Barbara Busser, secretary, Joan Stockman, treasurer, and Gail Middlebrook, director of social activities. M 1 ASSICK OICE BUSINESS STAFF There is always a constant hum of activity around room 301 both before and after school. The reason for this can be traced directly to the hard-working members of the Bassick Voice Business Staff who run busily in and out of that room to confer with their faculty advisor, Mr. Emanuel Kleinwald. On the capable shoulders of this group rests the responsibility of managing the financial end of both the Yearbook and the school newspaper, which comes out five times a year. Their first job of the year is to obtain subscriptions for these school pub- lications from the student body. They must then hustle around Bridgeport to solicit advertisers to help make up the deficit incurred the publishing of the Bassick Voice. The Business Staff must also direct the circulation of these pub- lications when they are distributed. The members of this group not only do a vital job for Bassick, but also gain invaluable experience in the goings on of the business world which they plan to enter in the near future. Seated, l. to r.: Kathryn Molloy, Sheila Brown, Katherine Turko, Annette Kleban, Jane Moore. USHERS' GUILD The members of this organization have the responsibility and pleasure of usher- ing at all of Bassick's performances as well as those at the Klein Memorial. The coveted membership in this group is based on scholastic attainment. In the past year these girls have been present at numerous concerts, benefits, and plays, where, dressed in evening gowns or their traditional maroon smocks, they dis- tributed programs and seated the arriving guests. They perform their duties in a capable and charming manner, always reflecting credit upon Bassick. The biggest event on the Ushers' Guild calendar is, of course, graduation! On this exciting night. every member of the Guild is on hand to make sure that things run smoothly and that guests are properly seated before the processional begins. Officers of this group are senior head usher, Rita Goldeng assistant head usher, Jane Hathaway. Anna Kaku is junior head usher, and her assistant is Elsie Alberghini. ,l !W25w First row, l. to r.: Lilli Rogers, Jolan Kovachs, Marcia Davis, Gerri Mangines, Elizabeth Bray, Kathy Merrit, Bruce Eddy, Joseph Romano, john Kobsar, Paul Leninger, Robert Babzcos, Timothy Kline, William Hanley, Harvey Paulin. BAD Pep, zest, and spirit are musts at any football game, and the Bassick High School Band, directed by Mr. Stephen Gaspar, does everything in its power to bolster these qualities in the rooting section. At these games, the band, clad in the colorful green and white uniforms, is always ready to break into a rousing chorus of Cheer, Cheer for Bassick High, A'The Green and White are out to Fight, or any other school favorite. Besides the above mentioned performances, the Band also plays at school assemblies, the annual Spring Concert, and at the pep rallies. Its repetoire goes from bop to pop, and its music always makes easy listening. When the band meets with its usual hearty acclamation, the band members are apt to forget the long hours of rehearsal that preceded the performance, none-the-less, these rehearsals are vital to its continued success. 98 TAMP CLUB A rather recent addition to Bassick's list of extra-curricular activities is the Stamp Club. It was organized in 1952 to give all Bassick stamp enthusiasts an opportunity to display and discuss their common hobby. The officers of this group are Arthur Schipul, presidentg Gerald Gaynos, vice presidentg Robert Johnson, secretaryg and William Stansfield, treasurer. Led by their advisor, Mr. Louis Sebestyen and by the above-mentioned students, it has had a most success- ful year. At their bi-monthly meetings the members avidly study all types of stamps - especially those of the United States, and they collect first-day covers as soon as they are issued. In February old stamp plates attracted everyone to the New Haven Historical Society and to the Peabody Museum. A few of the members of this organization have even joined the Bridgeport Philatelic Society as junior members. Plans have been made to expand the scope of the club next year so that it will also include coin collectors. Though few members of the Photography Club become experts in the field, everyone enjoys the weekly meetings, where he can display the latest photographs straight from the dark room, and perhaps receive a few tips on how to improve them the next time. The purpose of this club is not only to further the enjoyment of photography, but to teach young photographers the art of taking clear and effective pictures. The members are also taught about developing, shading, and enlarging their Films. Some of the better photographers are assigned to cover various school events for newspapers, the Yearbook, and for display on the Bassick Bulletin Board. The members of this organization, the advanced Latin students, try their best to live up to this motto, which means, 'LNot for school, but for life. This group has given its support to various chari- table organizations throughout the school year, and they also presented the school auditorium with a state flag, complete with standard and emblem. The junior Classical League enjoys many social events during the year, such as their very successful picnic. In a more educational vein, this organization supplements the curricular work by delving into the history of old Rome. These selected girls, sponsored by Mrs. Myrtle Humphreys, girls' gym teacher, perform their twirling and marching feats at all Bassick football games and pep assemblies, and they constantly astonish their fellow students with their complicated and intricate routines. Though the Twirlers must spend long hours practicing and perfecting their synchronized actions, this hard work is well compensated by the acclaim they receive at their frequent appearances. Their swirling white and green uniforms and plumed hats are well known to all Bassick students. The 1954 Twirlers have added a recent innovation to their performances in the person of Harriette Dorman, who deftly executes numerous acrobatic stunts. These girls, like the cheerleaders, receive their coveted emblems immediately before the Thanksgiving game. Judy Moody is the able head Twirler. I02 YEARBOOK STAFF From the first days of October to the mid-March deadline, the enthusiastic students comprising the Yearbook Staff worked busily to produce this record of Bassick, 1954. The imaginative layouts and sketches which give the book its character were created and worked out by Mr. Henry Walsh and his talented Art Staff. All during the school year flashbulbs were kept popping by Yearbook photographers to permanently record memorable events and everyday occur- rences at Bassick High. The literary staff, headed by Editor-in-Chief, Susan Schwartz, worked steadily with Mr. Richard Mayer to produce and compile all the written material included in this volume. The students and their faculty advisors tripped athletically up and down four flights of stairs to coordinate the work of the art department on the third floor, and the Literary Staff headquarters in the basement. However, all their efforts are justly compensated by the pub- lication and distribution of the 1954 Yearbook. Working with Mr. Charles Neary, these delegates, one chosen from each home room, have done a wonderful job to supplement our athletic funds. One of their main jobs during the year was the sale of Booster tickets. This year over 1200 tickets were sold - a number of them to the enthusiastic F ather's Club. Both the athletic fund and the student body benefit greatly from the sale of Booster tickets, the former because they provide a source of ready money at the start of the football season when it is needed most and the latter because they are permitted to attend all games at a reduced rate. These dele- gates have also acted as a liaison between the Faculty Advisory Committee and the student body. BASKETBALL TEAM The 1954 basketball season got underway at the end of December, and the Bassick team emerged victorious from their first game, with Harding. The Lions also beat Harding in their second seasonal tussle. The members of this team gave their all at every game, and they proved themselves to be one of Bassick's best Basketball Teams. The most exciting game of the year was against Fairfield. The score had remained almost equal throughout the entire game, favoring first one side then another. Then, as everyone was tense with excitement in the last few seconds of the game, one of Bassick's players scored two badly needed points to win the game for the Lions. Vandy Kirk was the high scorer for the year with Stilts O'Donnell running a close second. Mr. Harry Lyon coached the team, and Glenn Canfield was student manager. 107 ,l T'- mfg, 151 I-le, First row, l. to r.: Bob Mark, Rudy Poklemba, Gerald MacDougall. From the beginning the team had to cope with a lack of reserve strength and an excessive amount of injuries. One of these injuries, much to the disheartenment the entire student body, kept star halfback Rudy Poklemba off the gridiron for most of the season. However, despite all handicaps, the team showed true spirit on the field at all times. Leading the team were co-captains Bob Mark and Gerry MacDouga1l, whose outstanding performances were a continued inspiration to their teammates. The loss of the Thanksgiving game was a great blow to everyone, but the Bassick spirit was still indomitable. The victory was uncertain until the last few seconds of the game, and the Bassick squad never wavered. At the Thanksgiving game, as at all the others of the season, our eleven showed true sportsmanship and courage all the way. TENN I TEAM Bassick's 1953 tennis team completed its season with a praiseworthy record. In regular interscholastic competition the team won thirteen games, and suffered only two defeats. One of these end-of-the-season losses put an end to a twenty- nine game winning streak. Of the seven games won, five were against our city rivalsg this obtained for Bassick the undisputed City Championship. Led by the one-hit pitching of Mike Lengyel, Bassick scored its first of two victories against Central by a score of 8-0. The longest game of the season was a sixteen inning encounter with Milford. Even though Bassick lost this game, it proved that it had a very steady team. A second one-hitter during this season was pitched by Dick Mitchell against Greenwich. Batting honors for the year went to Gerry MacDougall who earned a .388 average. He was closely followed by third baseman, Dick Collins. , BVS ffff f x K. 4131 1 Q.: ft fr. CHEERLEADER Under the tireless direction of Mrs. Myrtle Humphreys, Bassick's cheering squad has gain proved itself to be the epitome of energy and enthusiasm. When these girls, led by co-captains Betty Carbone and Jean Zaccaria, assembled on the playing field or gym during any free moments in a game, their excess of spirit was transmitted to the student body, and the air reverberated with songs and cheers. The members of this group were present at all pep assemblies during this past year, and at the last one before the Thanksgiving game, combined with the Football Team to present a hilarious skit. In the early fall several days of tryouts were held for the Cheering Squad, but only the fourteen most agile and spirited girls were selected. These girls spent long hours practicing every action to accompany the numerous Bassick cheers, but this time paid off in their syn- chronized and graceful performance.
