Gar- and, who ,is leaving Bassick this year to as- sume greater responsibilities in our school system. We look upon Mr. Garand's leaving us with mixed emotions. We are proud and happy because of his success, and yet we cannot help a feeling of regret that Bassick is losing so well-liked and so capable an administrator. With you, Mr. Garand, go our sincere wishes for further success and happiness in your new position. May the coming years be satisfying and fruitful. Pk MISS MARY l. GALLAHUE Assistant Principal MR. FAITHFULLY YOURS The Senior Delegates are members of the senior class who have been elected to represent their homerooms in the planning and carrying out of class activities. Each homeroom elects a boy and a girl to represent it. Some of the jobs that fall to the members of this group are the collection of class dues, the counting of votes for class officers, and the bringing of suggestions and requests from the homerooms to the attention of the class advisors and oHicers. These delegates, as representatives of the homerooms, vote on important issues which affect the class and then report the results to their own homeroom. With all these jobs to do and meetings to attend, the Senior Delegates are among the busiest people in all of Bassick. 12 GARY SNYDER President W I V NANCY HOGAN Vice-President - X N , MRS. WISH YOU WERE HERE One of the highlights in the activities of the senior year is the day on which the girls entertain their mothers. This is the day of the Senior Mothers' Tea which takes place in the school library. This year the Tea was on February 11, with the theme centering around Valentine's Day. The mothers were cordially received by Mrs. Helen Spillane, the senior class advisor, and oflicers Ann Reath and Nancy Hogan. Pourers were Ann Foothorap and Ann Shultz. Entertainment was provided by Nancy Bassing, Doris Christenson, and jean Di Siena. Delicious refreshments of dainty sandwiches, cookies, and cakes were prepared for the mothers. The girls showed they could be gracious hostesses, and their mothers had an afternoon of pleasant entertainment. 52 ALAN cLAss HYMN 1953 STARR HOSBACH Fil f I'-J FFP J.+l-JJ r F kt Il- l' 1 i I l 'l Nl H173-Q 4-rlsl -I 11 Z III lI Y51ll Z2l Almlghty God we glVe thanks unto Thee We llft our hearts ln true humxlxty Be w1th us God as we go forth th1s day And for Thy guldance fervently we pray Lord llght our way wlth wlsdom and truth Preserve the faxth and credence of youth Sustam our strength and Splflt th1s day As bullders of peace dear Lord lxght us the way O God make strong each heart and every mmd That we may serve Thy wlll and all mankmd Thy nghteous ways 1mpart to us we pray Insplre Thy youth as we go forth th1s day God grant us the vxslon and courage we need In pathways of freedom our natlon to lead Imbue us wxth rev rence for Justlce we pray As bullders of peace dear Lord hght us the way N JF' Ld-.L ZW ff E' 1' ..L,LJ.'::L ,3- -1L. Second row Charles Donnelly, Ann Marie Hogan, james Bowe, Robert Beslove. FATHER OF Tl-IE BRIDE The play's the thing, and Father of the Bride was the pro- duction which the seniors made the biggest hit of the year. Many hours of work and rehearsals went into the play, with students and teachers working together for the play's success. We'1l never forget George Buckhout as Mr. Banks, the father who was so be- witched, bothered, and bewildered by his daughter's wedding. Gigi Archambault lent her pretty self to the part of Kay Banks, the bride, who watched her wedding grow from a small, family affair to a monstrous 52,000 extravaganza, almost causing a rift between her and her sweetheart, Buckley Dunstan, played by versatile Bob Purciello. Miss Mae McNulty directed the play, Mr. Warren Brown headed the stage crew, Mrs. Helen Spillane supervised the ticket department, and Mrs. Marguerite james was chief of the properties. 60 COME BACK LITTLE SI-IEBA CLASS OF 1953 REUNION PACT Now that our equally profitable and enjoyable h1gh school days at Basslck have come to an end we members of the Class of 1953 do pledge ourselves to reunlte Eve years from now 1n 1958 We wlll come together once agam to revlve the memorles of that t1me durmg wh1ch we were molded 1nto people able to face the World We know not what awalts us 1n the mterlm but at our reumon we shall be able to recall the good txmes of Basslck announce to our fellow members those successes that have come and maybe even add a measure of cheer to that one who needs lt Therefore untxl reunlon 1nv1tat1ons beckon one and all ln 1958 we remam true B8SS1Ck1t9S strxvxng Onward Ever gomg Backward Never Author Rxta Lundstrom Presxdent Gary Snyder Secretary Ina Shulkln Treasurer Edwm W1ckson G1rl Co D1rector Ann Reath Boy Co D1rector Ted Stafstrom 61 7 , . YES, MY DARLING DAUGHTER Snow Women was an appropriate theme for the tea for the members of the Junior Class and their mothers. The Junior Mothers' Tea was held in the school library on January 8, 1953. Judy Kurowski was General Chairman and Lois Johnson Mistress of Ceremonies. Debbie Bogin and Betty Lee Baum, class officers, together with Mrs. Rose Iodice, Class Advisor, welcomed the mothers. The dainty sandwiches were made by Barbara Soloff and Florence Nemic. Judy Berry's singing and Barbara Wheeler's tap dance added much to the enjoyment of the day. A soothing atmosphere was maintained by the background piano music of Joan Matey and Joanne Bovick. As the happy and satisfied mothers left, and the restoration committee took over, Mrs. Iodice and the Junior girls could look back with pride to a successful and enjoyable Junior Mothers' Tea. 67 L ': CLASS 1 'Q Y I ,S J. l,5'Yf I' ,, -'LJ 1 wx Gb ,glby -N7 ' f.-smsgv A I Al? The pins are worn for one year and returned in the hope of receiving another, in the case of the juniors, a gold pin for their senior year, and the seniors, a gold pin which they may keep. These fortunate juniors and seniors are elected by their own class on the basis of their scholastic ability and qualities of leader- ship. Since only a small percentage of each class is allowed to receive the pins, you may be sure that they are really qualified to wear this mark of distinction proudly both in school and after they have been graduated. 76 STUDENT COUNCIL First row, left to right: Carol Govla, Dilys Williams, Lucile Emond, Johanna Olayos, Herman Lebovics, Deborah Bogin, Edwin Wickson, Richard Bull, Judy Atkinson, Betty Ballas, Joan Weed, Kathrine Baker. The home room presidents not only attend these Student Council meetings but also conduct their own home room meet- ings, and lead their room at assemblies. This year the Council and its officers: president, Edwin Wicksong vice-president, Richard Bull, secretary, Deborah Boging and treasurer, Frank Perry, have granted the school many worthwhile improvements. All work done on the sets is done by Mr. Walsh's select group of artists, some of whom have been in the Scenic Art group from two to four years. Besides working on the sets during their regular art classes, the group also meets after school. Those who contribute to the sets have a right to feel proud to see their creations on stage, for what is a play if it has no background 82 ORDER OF BASSICK SECRETARIES Seated, left to right: Lucille Pucci, Jeanette Boscaini, Katherine Baker Helen Hesse Pat Boston. SI-IOWBO T Closely akin to the backstage madhouse before curtain time is the behind-the-scenes action at one of Bassick's plays. Aspiring thespians quake in their shoes, if they remembered to put them on, and wish they had never felt the itch for acting. But, as usual, under the superb direction of Miss Mae McNulty, the play is a scintillating success. The Senior and Spring plays are only two of the many activities of the Dramatic Club. Under the direc- tion of Mr. Stephen Gaspar, these musicians have had another active musical year. Besides playing at football games the Band livens up the school assemblies with their peppy marches, and is an invaluable asset at pep rallies. Among the band's many traditions, there has been a new trend-that of adding some jazz scores to their repertoire. Whether it's Dixieland or one of John Philip Sousa's rousing marches, the Band has played its way into the hearts of all Bas- sickites. 4 ff 5 4 GZ CHOIR First row, left to right: Ann Foothorap, Jeannette Subick, Mary Zamary, Lucille 4 V Woods, Barbara Burr, Gail Ford, Harvey Paulin, Miss Laing, David Hartman, Sidney Nelms, Audrey Tesch, Ann McNeill, Mary Lou Tyer, Joan Matey, Jean DiSiena. The Choir has been in existence for nine years, and the strains which float through the halls every 5B period grow sweeter each year. It's a busy year for the choir what with school performances and the yearly competition in city and state choir festivals. Joan Matey and Nancy Bassing spend many hours at the piano while the choir practices. WATCH ON THE RI-IINE The German Club, through its activities and functions, helps to arouse interest in German culture and makes German a more interesting language to study. Members, who know the club as Das Deutsches Hous, take part in German quizzes, games, and hear lectures based on German themes. The club's social agenda lists a Christmas party and a picnic in the spring. Together with Mr. Emanuel Kleinwald, faculty advisor, the staff seeks advertisements for the paper, directs circulation, and obtains subscriptions and orders. These rugged sophomores, juniors and seniors also make sure that each of the advertisers gets a copy of the paper as it comes off the press. These duties are extremely interesting and, doubtless, will prove beneficial to the Business Staff members in their future lives. The Business Staff is carefully chosen by Mr. Kleinwald each fallg and, although usually very small in number, the staff always succeeds in giving the students of Bassick an inexpensive, yet in- teresting and popular, school paper and yearbook. 94 YEARBOOK STAFF First row, left to right: John Takacs, Milton Wilkes, William Gergely, Herman Lebovics, David Merrill, Joseph Seliga. THE PLAYBILL The playbill needs no introduction, for here it is, right in your hands. The conscientious staffs of the yearbook, both art and literary, have been the Angels of this production. Broadway angels invest money in plays, but these Bassick angels invest their time and energy in readying the playbill for publication. Any time this year you might have seen this production taking place after school in rooms 12 and 306. The art staff would be busy with the layout of the playbill, the candid photos, spot drawings, and dioramas for the division pages, which go to make it up. The literary staff would be sorting senior pictures, writing up school activities and originating grinds Pro- duced by faculty advisors Mr. Henry Walsh of the Art Staff and Mr. Richard A. Although this group was first formed to be of service to the school, it now also enjoys a busy social life. Included in this year's program were the Christmas Faculty Tea, Induction Tea for the new members, food sale, Senior Banquet, and picnic. Because this group has been of such service to the school and be- cause it has been so enjoyable for the members, the Library Squad will continue to be one of the most important organizations at Bassick for many years to come. They have good prospects for winning the championship again this year. The members of the chess team are: John Halsy, Stan Lessler, joel Karlin, and Alan Lovins. Since 1935 the Chess Team has compiled a record of 153 wins, 27 ties, and 41 lossesg for a 7522 winning record. The Bassick Chess Club offers Bassick students an organization to play one of man's most fascinating games. CHESS CLUB First row, 'left to right:. The Chorus also sings at many of our assemblies and practices daily for these events. The group meets in the audi- torium under the direction of Miss Grace Laing, music supervisor. Members range from enthu- siastic freshman to anxious seniors, totaling one hundred and seventy-five. The music lent by the Chorus to the Christ- mas Assemblies helps to make them memorable. The Bassick Chorus started many years ago, and we hope it will continue many more to turn out the music that we love to hear. You can see, now the main goal of the Chorus is enjoyment. I 11:31 1 . RAZZLE-DAZZLE Bassick's young Football Squad, during the past year has obtained for themselves a record which, considering the factors of injury and inex- perience, has shown steady improvement. Under the expert coaching of Mr. Herbert Harrington, head coach and Mr. Michael Kobus, assistant coach, the squad has had a hard fighting record. Bassick's return of their injured captain, Rudy Poklemba on Thanksgiving Day, led them to victory over their traditional rival Fairfield by an overwhelming score of 38 to 6. With captain Rudy Poklemba and co-captain Art Robertson as their leaders, the team was undoubtedly in- spired. As a whole, Bassick definitely has shown a marked improvement. All of us hope that these boys on the football squad keep up the good work and bring in those winning points! AN AND Good sportsmanship and fighting spirit were displayed as our basketball team's basic qualities during the past season. The team got off to a good start by conquering the Alumni 47-55. A slump followed this victory, however, due in part to misfortune that took several of the regular players out of action. During the rest of the season, Bassick succeeded in placing the Green- wich, Central, and Stamford games in the win SUPERMAN column. All the games were worthy of the fine support that the students showed throughout the season. Ed Balla, outstanding forward, led the team as highscorer. Mr. Harry Lyons, coach of the team, Ronny Framson, the team's man- ager, and Larry Gress, captain of the team, deserve hearty applause for the fine work that they have done with the team this year. The team won sixteen matches in regular interscholastic competition and lost one. In addi- tion the team was host at the annual Fairfield County Tennis Tournament which it won by a close margin over a powerful team from Greenwich High. Team captain Les Zuckerman placed first in the number one singles position while Jim Faulkner won the number two singles by a wide margin. It was the sterling play of Faulkner which pushed the team to victory. Aaron and Fagan took second place in the doubles. Mr. Charles Carr did his usual great job of coaching the team while Jim Baird acted as manager. 106 BASEBALL TEAM First row, left to right: James Petro, Monty Mate, William Brown Kevin Tobin Richard McKnight, Kenneth Berger, Michael Lengel. Third row, left to right: Mr. Harry Lyon, Harold Rappaport, Norman Chacho Robert Beslove, Peter Cummings, Mr. Herbert Harrington. SEASON IN THE Coached by versatile Mr. Herbert Harrington the baseball team of SZ showed some fine hitting and all around good ball playing. The hard hitting of Rudy Poklemba, the tearnls outstanding shortstop, and Captain Luke Zinsky spurred the boys on to beat Central twice, with a close score of 9-8 in the first game and a larger margin of 8-4 in the second. The ability of catcher Kenny Berger and pitchers Mike Lengel and Dick Mitchell gave added support. Senior Richie McKnight showed some good hitting in the Danbury game, but Danbury had the edge of 12-11 at the end of the contest. Another thriller in which the team displayed its skill was the victory over Fairfield with a 5-4 score. A fighting spirit and the best of sportsmanship were a part of every game. This is a regular sight at Bassick football games during half-time. The girls not only perform on the football field, but also they open the pep assemblies with their baton tricks. The Baton T wirlers can be found in the gymnasium any morning before school working on their intricate routines. The Twirling Squad is three years old, and despite its relatively young age is one of the most impressive groups in the school. Mrs, Myrtle Humphreys, girls' gym teacher, has spent much of her valuable time in advising the girls' activities and teaching them some new tricks. The football field may be cold, but out there the girls have their pep to keep them warm. l08 Betty Carbone Judith Berry Sandra Crosby Elberta Moreland Jacqueline DeShon CHEERLEADERS Jacqueline Snetsinger Joyce Soldi, Jeannette McEachern, Jean Zaccarea Marie Nobile Mona Faulkner Joyce Sayball Barbara Hanz, Mary Ellen Kirk AS THOUSANDS CI-IEER They've got the style, and they've got the pep--they're the spirit behind both the football and basketball games at Bassick High. These lively cheerleaders, under the guid- ance of Mrs. Myrtle Humphreys, have put all their energy and vitality into boosting our athletes to victory. On the football field and the basketball court you'll find them leading the school songs and cheers with all the pep and spirit that's needed to insure a winning game. Even in the assembly hall they help inspire a spirit that makes Bassick a school of which one may be proud. These peppy cheer- leaders are not merely an added attraction in sports, but have become a necessityg and no game is complete without them. They've done a good job this year, and they'll be back next year for a command performance. 109 FOLLOW TI-IE GIRLS Under the direction of Mrs. Myrtle Humphreys and the leadership of President Iris Garcia, the Girls' Athletic Leaders' Association, better known as the G.A.L.A., has completed another successful year. To be a member of this club a girl must earn honors in Gym or 50 points in the interclass sports which take place after school. Having achieved this goal, the candidate must suffer through initiation day before she becomes a full-fledged member of the G.A.L.A. In addition to making available a wonderful sports program for girls, the G.A.L.A. sponsors several big events such as All Girls' Day, Play Days, and the all-important Sports Night. On Sports Night the girls play basketball against the members of the Boys' Varsity-the gentlemen under a slight handicap of wearing boxing gloves. Truly, a girl who has had the opportunity of belonging to the G.A.L.A. will have many pleasant memories to which she may always look back. G.A.L.A. SONS 0' FUN Thanks to the Athletic Delegates chosen from each homeroom, a full sports schedule was demanded by the students, and an active interest was aroused in the school's teams. The delegates had a tremendous job on their hands and they showed that they could tackle it successfully. One of the main tasks that this group accomplished was the selling of booster tickets to erase the athletic debt. The important idea behind the organization of the Athletic Delegates, which was brought together only one year ago, is to further interest in athletics at Bassick. An important phase of that work is to encourage maximum attendance at games. These delegates meet monthly with Mr. Charles Neary and officers: president, Edward Kinsella, vice-president, Mary Ellen Kirk, treasurer, Michael Lengelg and secretary, Nancy Hogan.
