You have kept closely in contact with us and have seen us grow both physically and intellectually. Among the memories of Bassick, many of which have centered around our homeroom, we shall remember you who have been our friends and advisers through these past three years. Helen C. Anderson Marie B. Or a chronicler of times Who could speak in lofty rhymes Please tolerate this poets' history E'en though its value remains a mystery. OUR ARRIVAL, SEPTEMBER 7, 1949 We came to Bassick in Forty nine To us it was a mighty shrine But Our schedules perplexed us They harassed and hexed us After the very first bout Trying to figure them out We found ourselves at las At the wrong time in the wrong class Highly confusing though often amusing Were directions which hit us unawares For climbing and descending the proper stairs Having struggled in errors FIRST CLASS MEETING, JUNE 8, 1950 We finally gathered side by side With Miss Fytelson as our guide. She had fine plans and held no fears, She thought she could last for the next two years. Gem of Wisdom: Teachers rush in where the reckless dare not tread. CLASS COLORS CHOSEN SEPTEMBER 17 1950 Roses are red violets are blue Nevertheless in a totally impartial election the Class of 1952 chose as its colors maioon and gold to be used for its banner yearbook and graduation gowns CLASS RINGS DECEMBER 14 1950 Rings are things of shiny gold For us to cherish and behold Ours helped to make our Christmas cheerful And surely made Five O a yearful Amongst these grave terrors U J NIOR MOTHERS TEA We let bits of learning silently enter FEBRUARY 14 1951 Our scarcely developed cranial center 3 x hi lah 00 S L 11111 a - 1 Milf .A Q? gf' v Mc gf XA IX I-fsifxa' 'v W I ,RF T . . . hal . .t 2, ,I , , , K., -X Q f . dl Ling, . . . MEN OF MUSIC When you are browsing around the library, make a special note to get the book entitled One Thousand Famous Orchestras, and there you will find a piece about the Bassick High School orchestra of 1952. The article goes on to say that this fine philharmonic society, under the direction of Mr. Augustus Zavory, conduc- tor, and joan Miller, student conductor, per- forms at school assemblies, the Spring Concert, the Senior Play, and the Spring Playg and is indeed an asset to the school. Congratulations to the orchestra for meriting a high place in the distinguished list of Bassick's extra-curricu- lar activities. WHO'S WHO Ten years hence we expect to see the majori- ty of these students up in the world and in the news, for they have the rare combination of both scholarship and leadership. This group might be termed as the cream of the crop, and much is expected of them. Each spring the sophomore and junior classes vote for five per cent of their fellow classmates who they think are worthy of this honor. The following fall at an impressive assembly these students receive their pins, the juniors, silver ones, the seniors, gold ones which they wear only for the ensuing year. At graduation seven per cent of the senior class is eligible to receive these pins which they keep permanently. The pins are donated by the United Civics Club of Bridge- port. Just as big oaks from little acorns grow, so do we have great expectations of these out- standing Bassickites. THE LAST TIME I SAW PARIS As Honore Balzac made an attempt to pic- ture all phases of French life in a series of novels entitled Comedie Humaine, so does Le Cercle Francais aim to help its members become further acquainted with France, its language, its customs, and its people. Guided by Miss Ulrika Benson and the officers: Harriet Borsuk, presi- dent: Marcia Marbury, vice-presidentg Germaine Paul, secretary: Sheila McLaughlin, treasurer, and Virginia Ekstrom and joan Berkowitz, chairmen of activities, the French Club has spent a most enjoyable year with many varied activities. The members of this group, present and past students of French, meet in room 219 the first Thursday of each month to sing songs, present pantomimes, and create puppet shows. An outstanding event of this year was a pre- sentation in conjunction with the Dramatic Club at an assembly where several members of Le Cercle Francais recited short stories in French. Indeed, this club is one of the most outstanding at Bassick. C, , I ai, I gre ll, Q N g, N. , if Q.-,4.,I w s.il ., if li, X Fm XM. To do this in the most interesting manner, movies, speakers, plays, songs, and games are presented. Thus, while being enter- tained, the members also learn a great deal of Spanish culture. Mrs. Marguerite James ably fills the position of faculty advisor. PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST A group in Bassick recognized for their many accomplishments are the Scenic Artists. Under the guidance of Mr. Henry Walsh these artists lay out and paint the sets used at assemblies and Dramatic Club productions. The Scenic Artists did the sets used in the Christmas Assembly, Senior Play, and the Spring Play. Their jobs vary from the delicate work of paint- ing a stained-glass window for the Christmas Assembly to the task of splashing sponges dipped in paint on the backdrop to simulate Hower-patterned wallpaper for the Senior Play. The assignments of the Scenic Artists may vary greatly, but their work is always of the same high quality. The club's officers who are Judy Nosal, presi- dent, Nancy Hoagland, vice president, Dorothy Collier, secretary, and Sheila McLaughlin, treas- urer, all work together under the guidance of Miss Mae McNulty, the director of this fine organization, to bring forth hidden talent. The members of this club, after and during school, are left on their own to put books back on the shelves, check books in and out, and to help and give information when needed. But all work and no play makes Jane a dull girl. From early fall un- til graduation this large group entertains Bassick students at events such as the Christmas Assem- bly, Green and White Revue, and the Spring Concert where they make a particularly im- pressive appearance. One of the factors in the excellence of their production is their charming director, Miss Grace Laing. Besides this vo- , 5 X' . cational guidance, a few simple nursing procedures such as making bc-. . taking temperatures and pulses -1- are also practiced The wonderful response to this new club has cer tamly assured its success ORDER OF BASSICK SECRETARIES Fxrst row Dolores Bloschok Carole Gennette Cyntlua Walter Edxth Markus Mar cella Dowlmg Lols jones Second row Mnss Elame Cooper Barbara Mester Ann Cowan Elame Glannettmo Helen Feroleto Marcna Robxnson Joyce Gibson Eleanor Fazekas Susan Traub DEAR SECRETARY As the name suggests the group 1S extra ord1nary for not any g1rl m the commerclal course can Jom only those who have mam tamed honor grades throughout the year can be accepted as members Mlss Elame Cooper IS the advlsor and she wlth the officers presldent Cynthia Walterg vice-president, Edith Markus: secretary Carole Gennette and treasurer Mar cella Dowlmg carry out the purpose of th1s club The chlef axm IS to prepare the gxrls for future jobs m the busmess world and they have frequent speakers to advlse them Thus Basslck w1ll contrxbute many an efflclent secretary to some harried business man. f,4N:,lU?x?,i 1 l 'W Lf 'K 156: SSS N L-3 pl K nlmlwmf L ,dj 4.4.- M JN - 2, . UNDERCOVER In the compiling of any book, the editorial and art staffs are of utmost importance, for it is with them that the horse-work lies. Advised by Mr. Richard Mayer and headed by Natalie Samelson, the editorial group could have been seen meeting at practically any hour planning the lay-out, choosing grinds, arranging pictures, and typing up the thousand loose ends. The art staff, headed by Mr. Henry Walsh, put their heads together to discover the best possible way to carry out the theme. Need more be said of the job of the yearbook staff? THREE ROUSING CHEERS On for Bassick, on for Bassick, raise your cheers on high! Yes, this can certainly be the motto of this year's cheering squad, which, under the direction of Mrs. Myrtle Humphreys, has shown their school spirit in both dark and shiny weather. We could find our cheering squad on duty boosting the spectators' spirits as well as the spirit of our team. The squad cheered not only the football team but also the basketball team. We know that whatever the circum- stances, we can always rely on our cheering squad'for their lasting support and effort. C' 91 nd ls FOOTBALL TEAM First row: Richard LaBrecque, Walter Kintop. THE YOUNG LIONS A in The words inexperienced, but spirited and determined can be used to describe best the Bassick High School football team of the past year. Its final record was two wins and five losses, Bassick winning the Central and Roger Ludlowe games. The Lions trounced their traditional rivals, Fairfield, in the Thanks- giving Day game at the close of the season by the score, 38-12. Poklemba and Baxter starred in this contestg and they, together with Meyers, scored touchdowns. The coaches of the Lions are Mr. Herbert Harrington and his assist- ant, Michael Kobus. They feel that although this year's team had but a fair season, mainly because of inexperience, next year's team should show to a greater advantage since many of this season's outstanding players will again be with the team. THE UNVANQUISHED Tennis anyone? .The ancient battle cry of the warriors of the racquet is heard resounding through the normally somber expanses of the Laurel Tennis Courts. The Bassick tennis team is playing a home game. Bassick has a tennis team of which it might well be proud. The team compiled an excellent record of thirteen wins and only two losses this past season. In addition, Bassick placed third in the state and second in the county toumament. Mr. Charles Carr is the tennis coachg jim Baird acts as student manager. SHOW BIZ As you sat frozen at the football games, you must have wondered and shivered at the sight of the baton twirlers who appeared at half- times in their attractive, but brief, apparel. No doubt you have noticed the skill in the execution of their complicated routines which comes as a result of the many hours they have devoted to practice under the direction of Mrs. Myrtle Humphreys. In this, their second year of existence at Bas- sick, the baton twirlers have established them- selves as an outstanding group of performers. ai TROJAN WOMEN ua, G. A. I.. A. Although the male athletes at Bassick seem to consistently hit the front pages, the fairer sex has made a most auspicious contribu- tion to sports at our alma mater. In their organization, the Girls' Athletic Leaders Association, Qbetter known to us as the G.A.L.A.j, the girls, guided by Mrs. Myrtle Humphreys, participate in many sports, such as basketball, swimming, soccer, volleyball, baseball, hiking, bowling, and tennis, and have proved themselves worthy members of this honor group. To become a member a girl must have received either a ninety in physical education or compiled seventy-live points in after school activities. Hats off to our women in sports! Fourth row: Charles Donnelly, Howard Aaron, Donald Muirhead, Edward Kuhn, David Synnott, Alfred Sharron, Roger Lerner, Robert Namian, james Pavel, George Kaiser, john Moriarity, Fred Pitt. This is the first appearance of the athletic delegates in the yearbook, and we indeed believe that they merit a page here, for their duties are of the utmost importance. These delegates are elected from respective homerooms and meet monthly under the guidance of Mr. Charles Neary. Their main purpose is to further ath- letics in Bassick and to discuss student prob- lems concerning the athletic policy. Among their many duties, the selling of booster tickets was of number one importance, and because of the huge sale of these tickets, the athletic fund was able to erase part of its deficit. The officers: Ronald Devan, presidentg Joseph Bridgeforth, vice-presidentg Mary Ellen Kirk, secretaryg and Nancy Hogan, treasurer, worked hard this year to increase school-wide interest in athletics.
