Now on the threshold of this life, Before proceeding on our way, With faith to Thee our eyes are raised. O Lord, we pause a while to pray. We ask not wealth, but a Worthy duty, Sharing laughter, song, and beauty. Endow us with a spirit free To work for all humanity. With steadfast purpose, aim, and Will Not just to do our share, but more, To aid our brothers with our skill, To struggle, hope, progress, and score! For, if the goal is worth achieving, Forever we'll go on believing That we must try to do our best, our bestg And leave to God, to God and time the rest. Father, grant our plea, All our trust we place in Thee. Amen diff lj:iili.iligiE,Esl-jjiif gi tt ati 000 00 'G' EDITORIAL STAFF Wada and Mum Ag eazlool .Qaff Editor-in-Chief . . Lasting friendships with classmates and faculty members have enriched our lives and have better prepared us to face the future. Because We are eager to share success, joy, and an everlasting associa- tion with each other, our class hereby announces its earnest intention to hold a reunion in ten years. The reunion committee, consisting of the class officers and the author of this pact, assumes the responsibility of making public the exact date and plans for the reunion in all local newspapers, in the school bulletin, and by any other available means. It is understood that all members of the class are expected to attend, regardless of social status or engagements, alone or with their families. We, the undersigned, pledge our sincere desire to fulfill the terms of this pact. SENIOR DELEGATES Two people from each senior home room, one boy and one girl, have the thankless task of squeezing fifty cents from the students of their home room. You would think that once they had performed this ardous duty they would be permitted to rest quietlyg but no, these over- worked people then have to decide how to spend the money they have collected. For some strange reason, they seem to find that this job is a trifle easier to perform. In general, the senior delegates have a hand in all of the class festivities. They have charge of publicity, tickets, and decorations for senior dances, they organize the class trip, they spend days and nights counting votes for the class characteristics. In addition they must keep their home rooms informed about all senior activities. And for all their pains, they are rewarded with such comments as VVha'd'ya want, more money? or Don't bother me, I gotta finish my homework. f ll ou ze Boy Richard Norell Herbert Gullberg ll Richard Nore John Saul Zoltan Lucas Richard Orsage Robert Scanlon llartin Swanhall Fred lhloody Nicholas Abriola Gus Seaman joseph Cottle Kenneth John a ehatactet, lllos t Popular Best Looking Don JI rllost S011 F lllost for C11 155 'lost Izzfliwirlual Likely to Surreed .Most Collegiate lllost Talkatiw rllost Frinzdly Quietext Cumr Bm Arhleff Biggm Flin Bm .lvtor lhlarjorie peat Girl Brennan Patricia Pettit lhlarjorie Brennan Janet Skane Natalie Comen Estelle Leonowicz Sara Klein 'SOB Greta Andei Claire Gifford Elizabeth VVargo is Florette Dion Ann Klarie Yveingart Rud Boy Richard Luca s james Dionis R ohert Gulyassy Klarshall Kidder Christy llletsopoulos Raymond Norell Richard Orsage Robert Gulyassy Kenneth Johnson Calvin Larson olph Tohis Iohn Pericas llfosl Pleas .qeniot P n 2110 W irfim flloxt Optinzisfir llflost Dignified fllost Business-Like lllost Jrlisfic Best Dressed llflost Courteous llfost Reliable Peppiest Xl lost fl'I11xi1:z1l lien' Danrer Best 14 dress 25 ing Personality Louise MCK Estelle Le se McKnight Greta Anders Helen Dore Dorothy Vanco Lorraine Le Girl Helen Dore Dorothy Krosky Rita Repko Anna Foley Agnes Odette night onowicz on dger lVIarjorie Brennan ufvetything .9've get fefonga to ou CLASS WILL OF 1948 We. the Class of 19-l-8 of Bassick High School, still being of sound mind and body and having gain- ed parole from our beloved Institution, realize that we must go forth into the world and face common ordinary people, adjusting our lives to conform to the accepted standards of society by disposing of our superfluous characteristics acquired during our three, four, or in brilliant cases five years in high schoolg therefore we bequeath our treasured possessions: First: To Mr. Roth, who has affectionately called us His Class , we leave pleasant memories of our days at Bassick, our sincere appreciation for his many kindnesses, and our deepest sympathies that he didn't graduate with us. Better luck next time, F. G. R.! Second: To Miss Gallahue we leave our grati- tude for her patient and untiring efforts in our behalf. Third: To Miss Kavanah we leave a compto- meter machine to assist her in her financial duties and our thanks for making our three years at Bassick run so smoothly. Fourth: To lVlr. Garand we leave our hope for continuing success in his dealings with errant underclassmen. Fiftlz: To Miss Orlin, our super class adviser, we leave the happy memories of all the fun we have had under her guidance and our appre- ciation of her helpfulness and understanding. Sixth: To the Class of 1949 we leave a hard- to-beat reputation . Seventh: Rich Norell, our President, leaves a bound volume of his corny jokes to be read at future senior class meetings. Eighth: Ken Johnson, our treasurer, leaves Danny Olah the secret formula for balancing the class budget. Only Ken knows how many hours he spent juggling the figures for the class's advantage. Ninth: To future rah-rahs the Black Rock girls leave their bewitching innocence. Tenth: Marge Brennan leaves her cute vivacity as that extra special ingredient contained in the vitamin pills given all Directors of Social Acti- vities. Sefventh: To Hazel and Claire Stenquist cute Greta Anderson and sweet Liz McKnight leave their inseparable companionship. Twelfth: Jack O'Leary and Herb Gullberg leave the junior football stars their technique in holding Fairfield down to a 6-6 tie. Next year may it be a 7-6 tie! Thirteenth: The seniors leave Cushwa! Fourteenth: To Bill Venman, lVIarshall Kidder leaves his glorious Daisy voice. Fifteentlz: To Jack Warren, Dick Lucas leaves his artistic ability. Sixteenth: Sweet Betty Wargo wills her win- ning charms to Ruth Hultgren. SefLfenteenih.' Helen Dore leaves her musical voice to anyone who can find it. Eighteenth: Bob Dienes leaves his complete obli- vion of his female fans to John Pardy. Nineteenth : To Connie Pettit, sister Pat leaves her beauty. Twentieth: King Frazer leaves-he hopes. Tfwenty-first: To lVIr. Davis and the beloved lab we bequeath pot holders, a box of Duz, gas masks, an adequate ventilating system, and Bob Scanlon's distilled Water. VVith Mrs. Katherine Mullins as 'conductor' the home room presi- dents meet once a month to discuss issues of im- portance to the school or to vote on particular measures, with harmony as their chief objective. Under the spotlights are Robert Gulyassy, presi- dent, Patricia Shannon, vice-president, Nlarilyn Holmes, secretaryg and Robert Sass, treasurer. The chief work of the council this year has been the placement of a bronze plaque in the school lobby as a memorial to the alumni who gave their lives in World War ll. On the lighter side, issues of general interest to the student body are thoroughly investigated. The choir opened its season early in November with a combined high school con- cert at the Klein blemorial, which turned out to be a bang-up success. Before anyone had time to catch a breath, Christmas loomed near. This Christmas found the choir caroling on a radio broadcast, on a program heard through the tower of the Hungarian Reformed Church, and finally at our own impressive Christmas assemblies. The members have worked end- lesly since last September, selecting senior grinds, writing up club activities, typing all material, reading proof, and-above all-checking the spell- ing of names. This group is made up of dele- gates chosen from each senior home room. Along with their editor-in-chief, Donald Pious, they have worked practically every night after school to make the yearbook a musical interpretation of life at Bassick. The staff has had lots of laughs in bringing this yearbook to you, and it sincerely hopes that you will have just as many laughs reading it. 83 i l COMBINED CHORUS First Row: Myron Freedman. Any time, any day one can find a group of choris- ters melodiously tuning up under the direction of Miss Laing. After weeks of this constant practice of chords, scales, and do, mi, sols , the members of the chorus were finally ready to make their big debut at the Christmas assembly. Their successful performance at this assembly was duplicated at the Spring Concert, which featured equally delightful singing. Everyone who heard the program agreed that each selec- tion by the Combined Chorus was truly a song to remember . Ram, fian, Ram .1 .1 'QQ Riff 'qgyusiiu 'SX ll FOOTBALL TEAM OF 1947 Firxt Rvfwi. The Green and VVhite opened its 1947 season by trouncing Mil- ford. lt then went on to defeat Central. For- tune turned, however, and Bassick was upset by strong Harding and Greenwich Squads. It was also overpowered by Stratford and Danbury. A pounding line and smart backfield upheld the traditions of Bassick by tying Fairfield, its arch rival, in the annual Thanksgiving Day game. In the first half, Bassick could do nothing against its heavier opponent. But in the second, playing on sheer nerve and grit, it completely outplayed the rival team. Although hampered throughout the season by injury and the loss of players, Bassieles football squad proved itself well worthy of the school's reputation for fighting teams. That's how they went all season with Bas- sick sprinting in the last few minutes of every tense game. The quintet started the '47-'48 season with five straight wins. This winning stretch included the big upset of the regular season, the last-minute victory of the Green over Central's Red and Black cohorts. Stamford knocked Bassick out of the undefeated classy and from then on, the Lions ll ive lffe 'pvc fffinutes funn had a little rougher sledding, winning seven, while dropping three contests. All in all, how- ever, it was a most successful season for the team, with the final totals showing twelve wins against four losses. This was more than enough to quali- fy Bassick for the state tournament. After an easy qualifying victory over Meriden, Coach Lyon's boys had an off night, and Were badly beaten by Hillhouse. But this defeat in no way darkens the bright season record, and the boys who helped compile that record deserve, for their sparkling play, plenty of credit.
