CLASS HI TORY 4 1 . JT: In September of 1954, Basalt High School gradually became aware of seven new fledg- lingsg mighty poor replacements, it decided, for the erudite group who had departed the previous spring, The senior class frantically began the process of converting these awkward Greenhorns into presentable Longhorns. Thus, Hugh Glassier, Rosina Usel, Beverley Madda- lone, Leland Hendricks, Carol James, Verna Dean Eiswerth, and George Atwood began to ascend the ladder of secondary education. Entering our sophomore year, we considered ourselves greatly advanced. And to add to our elation, we acquired three new members right off-the-bat: Pat Greene from Aspen, Maralyn Tuttle from Fort Collins and Ginger Calhoun from New Castle. During the second semester, Betty Jean Ross from Los Angeles, California brought our total membership up to an impressive eleven. In the spring, however, Betty Jean left us, making our class enroll- ment an even ten. The Even Ten advanced boldly into year three. Now we really were Utopiansg actu- ally tolerated by the honorable seniors and reverently respected by the underclassmen for so we thought lj. I hasten to explain that although we were still ten in total a few changes had been made, During the summer Pat Greene and George Atwood left us but were replaced by Bill Ericson from Mancos and Chuck Newell from Brighton. ln the fall of 1957 we surprised everyone including ourselves by becoming SENIORS! Through the summer we had lost Maralyn Tuttle who moved to Craig, Chuck Newell who returned to Brighton and Ginger Calhoun who went to Gypsum. ln the latter part of Novem- ber, Joann Grant came to Basalt from Colbran and Vess Quinlan from Pueblo County High School joined our class in January, So, the good Lord and the School Board willing, Carol James, Beverley Maddalone, Verna Eiswerth, Joann Grant, Rosina Usel, Hugh Glassier, Leland Hendricks, Bill Ericson, and Vess Quinlan won't be decorating the corridors of old B. H. S. next fall, incidentally, of the entire class, Hugh Glassier and I have attended Basalt School continuously since the first grade. BY Rosina Usel
