me 'W N v 41 in . ,,,4w6w ,,,.,,, f THE LOCAL GENTRY uoA BA! cnsrls Souda Bay was interesting from many standpoints. lt was our first foreign port of call and our first opportunity to use foreign currency, in this case, the drachma lworth about three centsl. Also, it was the first visit to the island of Crete for most of the crew, even the old timers . Thus, this quiet but very scenic spot proved a most pleasant introduction to the Med. ln addition to sight-seeing, the crew en- ioyed a beach party at Kalimite Beach which included softball, ,and swimming. This port also gave the members of the BARTON a first hand glimpse of the Royal Helenic Navy or the Greek Navy. The BARTON departed our first Med port with many good friends from Crete.
