ABOUT THE SHIP . . . Two U. S. destroyers have been named in honor of RADM. John K. Barton, who did much to develop steam engineering. USS BARTON CDD-7221 was launched on 10 October 1943 at Bath 1Marinel Iron Works, first of the new 2200-ton SUMNER class de- stroyers. During World War ll, BARTON saw action at Normandy, Cherbourg, Luzon, Oki- nawo and many other historic islands in the Pacific. BARTON was ordered to Korean duty in June 1952. There as Flagship for commander East Coast Blockade Forces and later for com- mander Wonsan Bombardment Element, she distinguished herself in accurate short bom- bardment and SAR operations. is 1' g LET'S MEET THE ' t CAPTAIN . . . CDR Wiemer was born in Syracuse, New York. He was appointed a Midshipman, United States Naval Academy, after comple- tion of two years' enlisted service with the U. S. Marine Corps. His service subsequent to commissioning on the ninth of June, 1943, has included engineering and gunnery billets during wwn on board uss CHARLES E. HUGHES 1DD-4281. Following the war, CDR Wlemef Spent two years as Navigator, Execu- tive OFficer and, ultimately, Commanding Cf- ficer of USS H. R. KENYON CDE-6831. During On 4 January 1954 BARTON left Norfolk for a four-month round-the-world cruise. After routine operations during 1955, she entered the Charleston Naval Shipyard in Sept. 1955. She depgrfed Norfolk again on for duty with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediter- l'C1I'l6ClI'i. BARTON remained in the Mediterranean area throughout the Suez Canal crisis and then returned to her home port of Norfolk the first part of 1957. Since that time BARTON has operated alternately under the control of Commander Sixth Fleet and Commander Second Fleet, again and again distinguishing herself in battle readiness. On 15 August 1960 RADM F. V. H. Hillis, ComDesFlot Four representing COMDESLANT officially presented the BARTON with thesbat- tle efficiency E for her record during the 1960 fiscal year. After its regular yard overhaul in the winter of 1961, and a short refresher tour at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the ship returned to Norfolk for a brief stay before setting out across the Atlantic on 8 September. 1948-1949 he was Commanding Officer of USS PCE-900, after which he spent three years as an instructor with the NROTC unit at Tu- lane University. From 1953 to 1954 CDR Wie- mer saw duty as First Lieutenant and Gunnery Officer of USS WASP CCVA-181 and as Navi- gator and Executive OFficer of USS R. E. KRAUS CDD-8491 from 1957 to 1958. He at- tended the .Armed Forces Staff College, Nor- folk, during '55-57 and was graduated in July of 1957. Immediately prior to taking command of BARTON in August of 1961, CDR Wiemer was an instructor in Naval Engineer- ing, U. S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Mary- land. His decorations include the American Defense, Atlantic Pacific, European-African- Middle Eastern Theaters, Victory, WWII, .lap- anese and European Occupation, China Serv- ice: Korean, and National Defense Medals. CDR Wiemer is married and has one child.
