NORTH ATLANTIC PATROL - MARCH l9l8 Send More Destroyers The destroyers thot steamed into battle in World War l were a far cry from the sleek, mighty, guided-missile ships of today. The destroyer of those days was the famous Four Piper . Armed with 4 inch guns and one I inch gun, dis- placement lO9O tons, these beloved ships were pressed into service to stop the U-Boat menace. England had but six weeks supply of food, 900,000 tons of Allied shipping had been sunk, April l9l6 found Eng- land on the verge of defeat. ' July 1917 found 34 of our destroyers on convoy duty. By Autumn Allied ships lost dropped to 300,000 tons. The Four Pipers sunk 35 U-Boats, over holf the number destroyed by all other type ships.
