T L M Unfortunately the weather during this time Q of the year was against us. But--, let it never be said a sailor gives up. A French Fashion concern put on a fashion show for the crew and a Bikini was seen by all hands. WOW l!!! was the reaction of the Troops . As the bewitching hour approached on 31 December l96l the low and high fly- ing corks from French Champagne could be heard and seen. This is an outstanding way to see the New Year in. Many of the crew did not wish to leave this friend- ly little country. ,ff LIVORNO .rr-A...,.,. a.:.r if Livorno, Italy, BARTON's home from 20 to 27 January offered less than most of the ports we have visited in the way of Liberty and Recreation opportunities. However, Livorno did have two outstand- ing features. First was Camp Darby Army Base which opened its doors to Sixth Fleet personnel. Several athletic events were played including a Cricket game with a British Cruiser lln which BARTON barely went down in defeatl and a softball game between the crew and a combined team of Chief's and Officers. lFinal score Crew l7, Chiefs and Officers ll. Second was Livorno's close proximity to Pisa, Home of the Leaning Tower, and Florence, considered the most beautiful city in Italy. Ample tour opportunities were available during our stay and that al- most any time of day one sailor could be seen taking a picture of his buddy holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Tours to Florence provided for many an introduction to some of the most beautiful art treasures of the world, by such mas- ters as Rafael, Michealangelo, and Leo- nardo Di Vinci.

Italian Masters at Arms. ,fu Q X A P LERMO BARTON visited Sicily for the first time during this deployment from 2 to 4 December and made a return visit T2 to l8 January 1962. Palermo is a city of over one-half million but has little of the hustle and bustle of the usual large city. There were, however, many place-s of historical, religious, and scenic significance there for the asking. Palace of the Norman Kings, lPresent seat of the Sicilian Parliamentl the Cathedral Moreale, and the beau- tiful harbor Conca d' Ora to mention only a few. A drive through the mountains was an unforget- able experience. There was also a Sunday Foot- ball game between Gunnery Department Officers and the rest of the ship. The Gunners moidered em!!!

I I1 I.. TOULON From 27 January to 4 February BARTON again battled Mother Nature and this time came out on the long end of the stick. Facing seas of nearly the proportions of those of early November thescrew managed to fuel twice on successive days, and in general handled them- selves in the finest tradition of seamanship. The ship suffered almost no damage, nevertheless, everyone was glad to pull into Toulon on the fourth for a well de- served and all too brief liberty and recreation period. There was a bit of trading done here, the American White Hat for the French Navy Cap lPom Pom and alll. As always it was good to return to France. 4 .:.c f .X H ar 3 A 'R M617 , ,,,,r I, ,,,,,,,,,, ci-, LA PEZIA Those who didn't visit the Italian Riviera when we were in Genoa got one last opportunity from I0 to I7 Feb- ruary during our stay in La Spezia, Southernmost point of the famed Riviera Levante. Although this is a quiet spot, especially in the winter, it is one of great scenic value and the camera bugs had a field-day. HLSUC SNA?- i LAY BACK ON IT!
