'filnw MALTA After a very interesting five day at sea period which introduced us to Sixth Fleet underway replenishment the ship put in to the island of Malta on the fourteenth of October. This was the only English speaking port which the BARTON hit during our deployment and in this respect proved a welcome relief from the usual Mediterranean language barrier. However, the almost disasterous encounter with the British money system convinced most of the crew what a great thing the dollar is. We only spent two liberty days in Malta but we came away with many fine remembrances. ,c W M A Q 1 gi Q A 7 an-wwf, Wk Wa? I WV' V 4 n is Z 1 s 4 7 'sf Z

MW, 411, PLAZA-NAPLE WITH CAMEO FACTORY IN BACKGROUND NAPLES Following our longest at sea period, two weeks in all, the ship entered Naples, Italy, on 27 October for the first of 'four very pleasant visits. This was our first ltalian port and presented the opportunity to visit Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius, Sorrento lAlways a fine place to go back tol and even make a three-day soiourn to the magical city of Rome. For those who chose to remain in Naples the world famous San Carlo Opera, the many Cameo factories in the hills surrounding the city, and the great variety of restaurants and clubs featuring Italian food and drink served in the Neapolitan manner and ac- companied by wandering minstrels. Our second visit to Naples from 20 to 27 November again presented excellent tour opportunities plus the chance to revisit favorite places in the city itself. But undoubtedly our most enioyable stay in Naples was over the Christmas Holidays. The crew sponsored parties for two groups of orphans and many a wide-eyed youngster came aboard and warmed the hearts of even the saltiest of sailors. The high-light ofthe party was the arrival of Santa Claus, a certain FT3 who shall remain nameless, and the distribution of toys to the children. Guess who played with them the most? ss ws, wgw, si-gsfff A cf ,-s vs x,.wf,,, s, Wifi! . :K Wai . 'A A
