Two U. S. destroyers have been named in honor of RADM. John K. Barton, who did much to develop steam engineering. USS BARTON CDD-7221 was launched on 10 October 1943 at Bath 1Marinel Iron Works, first of the new 2200-ton SUMNER class de- stroyers. During World War ll, BARTON saw action at Normandy, Cherbourg, Luzon, Oki- nawo and many other historic islands in the Pacific. BARTON was ordered to Korean duty in June 1952. There as Flagship for commander East Coast Blockade Forces and later for com- mander Wonsan Bombardment Element, she distinguished herself in accurate short bom- bardment and SAR operations. is 1' g LET'S MEET THE ' t CAPTAIN . . . CDR Wiemer was born in Syracuse, New York. He was appointed a Midshipman, United States Naval Academy, after comple- tion of two years' enlisted service with the U. S. Marine Corps. His service subsequent to commissioning on the ninth of June, 1943, has included engineering and gunnery billets during wwn on board uss CHARLES E. HUGHES 1DD-4281. Following the war, CDR Wlemef Spent two years as Navigator, Execu- tive OFficer and, ultimately, Commanding Cf- ficer of USS H. R. KENYON CDE-6831. During On 4 January 1954 BARTON left Norfolk for a four-month round-the-world cruise. After routine operations during 1955, she entered the Charleston Naval Shipyard in Sept. 1955. She depgrfed Norfolk again on for duty with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediter- l'C1I'l6ClI'i. BARTON remained in the Mediterranean area throughout the Suez Canal crisis and then returned to her home port of Norfolk the first part of 1957. Since that time BARTON has operated alternately under the control of Commander Sixth Fleet and Commander Second Fleet, again and again distinguishing herself in battle readiness. On 15 August 1960 RADM F. V. H. Hillis, ComDesFlot Four representing COMDESLANT officially presented the BARTON with thesbat- tle efficiency E for her record during the 1960 fiscal year. After its regular yard overhaul in the winter of 1961, and a short refresher tour at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the ship returned to Norfolk for a brief stay before setting out across the Atlantic on 8 September. 1948-1949 he was Commanding Officer of USS PCE-900, after which he spent three years as an instructor with the NROTC unit at Tu- lane University. From 1953 to 1954 CDR Wie- mer saw duty as First Lieutenant and Gunnery Officer of USS WASP CCVA-181 and as Navi- gator and Executive OFficer of USS R. E. KRAUS CDD-8491 from 1957 to 1958. He at- tended the .Armed Forces Staff College, Nor- folk, during '55-57 and was graduated in July of 1957. Immediately prior to taking command of BARTON in August of 1961, CDR Wiemer was an instructor in Naval Engineer- ing, U. S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Mary- land. His decorations include the American Defense, Atlantic Pacific, European-African- Middle Eastern Theaters, Victory, WWII, .lap- anese and European Occupation, China Serv- ice: Korean, and National Defense Medals. CDR Wiemer is married and has one child. THE 1961-62 BARTON CRUISE Book IS DEDICATED TO MR, MORALE J. D. HAGGARD POSTAL CLE-RK THIRD CLASS Everyone knovvs-l'laggard. His performance in all brancheslof mail service has been so outstanding as to warrant an 'official letter of Commendation from Commander Destroyer Squadron Two. During this deployment, he has done more for the morale of BARTO'N's officers and men than any other single individual, often at the cost of his own liberty hours. ' WELL DONE, HAGGARD. Also, it was the first visit to the island of Crete for most of the crew, even the old timers . Thus, this quiet but very scenic spot proved a most pleasant introduction to the Med. ln addition to sight-seeing, the crew en- ioyed a beach party at Kalimite Beach which included softball, ,and swimming. This port also gave the members of the BARTON a first hand glimpse of the Royal Helenic Navy or the Greek Navy. This was the only English speaking port which the BARTON hit during our deployment and in this respect proved a welcome relief from the usual Mediterranean language barrier. However, the almost disasterous encounter with the British money system convinced most of the crew what a great thing the dollar is. This was our first ltalian port and presented the opportunity to visit Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius, Sorrento lAlways a fine place to go back tol and even make a three-day soiourn to the magical city of Rome. For those who chose to remain in Naples the world famous San Carlo Opera, the many Cameo factories in the hills surrounding the city, and the great variety of restaurants and clubs featuring Italian food and drink served in the Neapolitan manner and ac- companied by wandering minstrels. Our second visit to Naples from 20 to 27 November again presented excellent tour opportunities plus the chance to revisit favorite places in the city itself. But undoubtedly our most enioyable stay in Naples was over the Christmas Holidays. The crew sponsored parties for two groups of orphans and many a wide-eyed youngster came aboard and warmed the hearts of even the saltiest of sailors. The high-light ofthe party was the arrival of Santa Claus, a certain FT3 who shall remain nameless, and the distribution of toys to the children. GE NOA After three days of battling the worst Mediter- ranean storm of the winter BARTON moored in Genoa on 6 November for a well-deserved week's rest. The week went by in a flash for there was much storm damage to repair and a general clean- up needed. However, even with the extra work load the crew found time to visit this famous birth- place of Columbus. For many, Genoa proved to be the most enioyable port to date. The crooked little streets, some no more than ten feet wide, offered excellent shopping opportunities for even the most discriminating souvenir hunter. Also the great palaces of the city and the landmarks, such as the house where Columbus was bo-rn, attracted many crew members. Those with real ambition even ventured to the Riviera of the Rising Sun lRiviera Levantel starting iust south of Genoa at Nerve and extending sixty miles down the coast to La Spezia. King Neptune decided to smile on the BARTON and we left Genoa amid sunshine and calm. x I I X ,w,.,Z N !BF F' 4 , rw 1 ,f ,, , ,,,,,, we ,,,, V., Y if lf 7v f Q! if I YOGI AND BOO BOO - , if 'f stfrf X, ccxy X , dag Xxx f T his I f :Bti . 5 , Q 2 'X , ' ss SQ-NX A 4 .M . ,xx J' su! .kr ,Q .. f ft y W A 5 1' , K: .px tx Q53 1' ' to .- U. x Q , ,ws cha 5 N33 X A 'I . . Palermo is a city of over one-half million but has little of the hustle and bustle of the usual large city. There were, however, many place-s of historical, religious, and scenic significance there for the asking. Palace of the Norman Kings, lPresent seat of the Sicilian Parliamentl the Cathedral Moreale, and the beau- tiful harbor Conca d' Ora to mention only a few. A drive through the mountains was an unforget- able experience. There was also a Sunday Foot- ball game between Gunnery Department Officers and the rest of the ship. However, Livorno did have two outstand- ing features. First was Camp Darby Army Base which opened its doors to Sixth Fleet personnel. Several athletic events were played including a Cricket game with a British Cruiser lln which BARTON barely went down in defeatl and a softball game between the crew and a combined team of Chief's and Officers. lFinal score Crew l7, Chiefs and Officers ll. Second was Livorno's close proximity to Pisa, Home of the Leaning Tower, and Florence, considered the most beautiful city in Italy. Ample tour opportunities were available during our stay and that al- most any time of day one sailor could be seen taking a picture of his buddy holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Tours to Florence provided for many an introduction to some of the most beautiful art treasures of the world, by such mas- ters as Rafael, Michealangelo, and Leo- nardo Di Vinci. I I1 I.. TOULON From 27 January to 4 February BARTON again battled Mother Nature and this time came out on the long end of the stick. Facing seas of nearly the proportions of those of early November thescrew managed to fuel twice on successive days, and in general handled them- selves in the finest tradition of seamanship. The ship suffered almost no damage, nevertheless, everyone was glad to pull into Toulon on the fourth for a well de- served and all too brief liberty and recreation period. There was a bit of trading done here, the American White Hat for the French Navy Cap lPom Pom and alll. NORTH ATLANTIC PATROL - MARCH l9l8 Send More Destroyers The destroyers thot steamed into battle in World War l were a far cry from the sleek, mighty, guided-missile ships of today. The destroyer of those days was the famous Four Piper . Armed with 4 inch guns and one I inch gun, dis- placement lO9O tons, these beloved ships were pressed into service to stop the U-Boat menace. England had but six weeks supply of food, 900,000 tons of Allied shipping had been sunk, April l9l6 found Eng- land on the verge of defeat. ' July 1917 found 34 of our destroyers on convoy duty. By Autumn Allied ships lost dropped to 300,000 tons. The Four Pipers sunk 35 U-Boats, over holf the number destroyed by all other type ships. H 11 Novemssn 1918 The War to End Wars ended 11 November 1918. Peace treaties were ' d The League of Nations was formed. Conference tables would settle sagne , arguments . . no more wars. America quickly scrapped forty destroyers, the public forgot the two hundred destroyers that were quickly tucked away. War was costly. We stayed neutral. Peace at any price. In 1940 titty destroyers were Lend-Leased to England, 22 years after their decomissioning. England WORLD WAR I MOTHBALL FLEET sex., . 1. Four oil-fired highpressure steam boilers produce steam at pressures up to 600 lb. per square inch. Superheated to 8500F., the steam is fed to turbines developing up to 60,000 h. p., which drive twin screws through reduction gears. Evaporators and con- densers transform sea water into fresh water for the boilers. Dynamos provide electrical current to train the guns, hoist ammunition and boats, diesel-driven generators provide power if the dynamos fail. A myriad of pumps and thousands of feet of pipe carry oil and water to the boilers, salt water to ballast tanks and various fire-fighting stations, and fresh water throughout the ship for various uses.. Powerful electric blowers keep up air pressure in the firerooms and other blowers ventilate the ship. Complicated and intricate electrical and electronic devices steer the ship, aim and fire guns and torpedoesg maintain radar watch for planes and other ships, make sonar search for submarines, and navigate the ship by use of loran and dead reckoning tracers. A telephone system pro- vides communication throughout the ship, while radio phones keep it in communication with other ships and planes. While admittedly crowded, destroyer quarters are, in themselves, no less comfortable than those of other ships, : -MM'-in 1 gg, -y 'S' 1 H- 2 i-IQ. If -ur i .gg .. gi ia! WM USS WALLER one-466 The USS WALLER iDDE-4663 won the Rhode Island Navy League award for DESLANT'S most pro- ficient destroyer in Anti-Submarine warfare. 1961 z ffm ' ' 9 ff Q' if 5' 5 ,Q X QXZQSW- ,f s 5, fn. uf. WALLER is awarded second successive An'ri-Sub- marine Warfare HA . WHAT IS A DESTRDYER? In war and peace, a destroyer does many things, and does them well. She was built to be the most versatile ship in the Navy. Because of her tremen- dous capabilities the destroyer is necessary in every type of naval opera- tions, the Spearhead of Sea Power. What are these capabilities? First of all, the destroyer is the primary opponent of the submarine. Only a destroyer has the detection equipment to seek out and actively and accurately pinpoint an enemy submarine. Only a destroyer has the arsenal of weapons such as hedgehogs, depth charges and homing torpedoes to sink the submarine. Secondly, the destroyer is a prime opponent of attacking enemy aircraft. With accurate, long range radar and excellent plotting capabilities, the destroyer detects approaching aircraft and can vector friendly planes to inter- cept and destroy them. And if they get in close, destroyer guided missiles or gunfire can actively combat the enemy planes. Third, the destroyer is a prime oppo- nent of enemy surface raiders. Using high speed torpedoes and rapid, radar- controlled automatic gunfire, the de- stroyer can battle it out against much bigger and heavier opponents at sea. Fourth, the destroyer carries her destructive power to the enemy ashore. Steaming close to shorelines, destroy- ers use their heavy guns to clear enemy beaches for our assault forces making an amphibious landing. Their gunfire support pinpoints enemy strongpoints allowing our forces ashore to move ahead and their bombardment of enemy artillery protects our minesweepers clearing minefields out in channels to enemy harbors. Those are the wartime capabilities of a destroyer. The capabilities that make this warship the Key Ship of the Fleet. For every naval operation requires destroyers. . .and destroyers in large quantities. The fast striking force is screened by destroyers for protection. Destroy- ers operate far ahead of the attack force as pickets to give early warning of approaching raiders. Destroyers screen the huge convoys of merchant ships to protect them from submarines, aircraft and surface attack. Destroyers are necessary to the suc- cess of amphibious assault landings and to subsequent battles to secure positions farther inland. And so it goes. Name a naval operation and you will find that the destroyer is there in numbers, in the forefront. ln peacetime, the mission of the destroyer is to be ready to fight immed- iately if a war comes along. . .any kind of a war. To be ready to tight, the men who man destroyers must work as a team, keeping their armament and detection equipment and their engineer- ing plants in top notch condition. Naturally to achieve this, destroyer- men must train and keep training con- stantly. For it is only through repeti- tive trainingthat they learn to function automatically and work together as a well-oiled machine. Thus in peacetime, destroyermen and destroyers are constantly on the move . . .from one type of naval operation to another. . .getting the on-the-job practical experience that is necessary to success in war. -flim- CHAQL .3 -3 Cspem' ff rf- Qs., I USS CHARLES S. Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, where the forbidden loyalist dialect is spoken and loved. With the romance of the Ramblas, quaint shops, the pageantry of Plaza de Toros, and the pride of a people, Barcelona is unique. These people are warm, and display a pride which is nothing less than aristocra- cy, and yet somehow different, in that wealth and poverty are overlooked. We are Spain, they say . . . this, to them is significant. 'l W While ambling through friendly streets, one might smell the blended aromas of roasting chicken, rotting wood, cheap perfumes, tangy sweetmeats, ancient stone . . . the crashing realization of the old being dragged into the commercial times of today. As if blossoming in mysterious weathered faces, contrast is a medium, like a foreign tongue, used to paint a picture of real- ity. Barcelona is an island apart from the world, which like good wine has been mellowed by the passing of time. fpttffm- VV ,tqf?.i, K 1 get we A . ,. They are also on the job for refueling at sea or high-line transfer. SECOND DIVISION Their job is the maintenance and repair of the ship's guns. The brasses shine, the bores are clean, and the sights are true. FOX DIVISION Fire control technicians, sonarmen, torpedomen. The guns hit their mark, underwater objects are detected, and torpedos, depth charges, and hedgehogs are maintained. Ol DIVISION When you're homeward bound and the fog rolls in you appreciate a top-notch radar gang. When the fog lifts you might want a radio fixed or need a T.V. tube. The men of OI will help you. OC DIVISION When underway one of the busiest groups of men aboard. Plotting the course, visual com- munications, and Radiomen maintaining con- tact with shore. M DIVISION Since the beginning of the U. S. Navy the en- gineers have played an all-important part in the life of a ship. No matter what the weather or the reason the ship must always be ready to go. THE FOLLOWING PAGES TAKE YOU INTO EIGHT DESTROYER DIVISIONS THROUGH THE EYE OF A CAMERA R DIVISION The repairmen - Pipefitters, Damage Control- men, Metalsmiths. Their job often appears thankless, but the fact that a ship is afloat iS often directly attributable to these very men. S DIVISION Most directly responsible for the care and feed- ing of destroyermen. Haircuts, meals, pay, as- prin, or clean clothes . . . all the responsibility of S Division. 1 , I 71 f A 'ff , , 1 ' 1. 1 1 'I wg' ,. L G.f ' '. ' fr If , L :,,,,:y6.
