Bartlett Yancey senior High School Yanceyville, North Carolina 27379 1984 YAN-TAT BEGINNINGS TABLE OF CONTENTS The Chinese people say that a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. The 1983-84 school year has been one of those steps toward the future of Bartlett Yancey High School. From the new principal to the new football stadium, the past year has been one of change and beginnings. The 1984 Yan-Tat is an attempt to capture this year of beginnings in pictures and words so that we may look back on this year and learn from its lessons. As you consider the 84 Yan-Tat try to remember the opportunities that were made available to you at Bartlett Yancey. Learn from the past and treasure the memories found there. Consider this moment the beginning of your future and use the knowledge gained at B.Y. to make your future the brightest possible. We, the 1983-84 Yan-Tat Staff, hope that, in some small way, this yearbook will capture some of these beginning moments for you, the students and faculty. Our efforts have been sincere, and we ask that you be patient with our mistakes. We trust that you will enjoy the 1984 Yan-Tat from . BEGINNINGTO ... THE END 2 A bad beginning makes a bad ending. So to make the most out of this year everyone should be equipped with good friends, love, hard work, and de- termination. ■ ■ mi W4 3 4 The turning over of a new leaf, and the work that goes with starting over from scratch may be hard, but with our excellent teaching staff, and responsi- ble caring student body we can surely help make our year something spe- cial. 6 A new school year also brings new faces. We welcome these new con- rads to Bartlett Yancey High School. We hope your stay here will be one of great accomplishments. 7 8 9 Freshmen arrive nervous, anxious, and excited. They are ready to begin this wonderful phase of their new life as high school students. Fresh re- solves have been made in hopes they will be ful- filled. Young people make the most of your short time period here, because this fantastic opportunity to expand your minds, and capabilities may never come in this form again. 10 A new school year brings many new changes, like the changing of our principals and the construc- tion of ournew football stadium. Of course we shall miss the old way of doing things, but there has been a new door opened for us. One that will enrich Bartlett Yancey more, we gladly accept these new changes which have been bestowed upon us. We will nurture them to their fullest and make this and future years the best ever. 11 Computers are a new beginning for the stu- dents at B.Y.H.S. They've made a big impression on the students and even on the faculty mem- bers. Computers have played an important role in the Jets Club. Mrs. Dalton is teaching evening classes to anyone who is a Jets member and to those who would like to know how to work the computers. The Yan-Tat staff also has a good use for the computer. That's how they typed all their copy. . O- 12 13 This school year brings a new be- ginning of friendship. It helps peo- ple learn the meaning of love, work, and play. 14 People come to school for different things. A happy beginning usually has a happy ending. is DEDICATION Helpful, understanding, sincere, and dedicated are only a few of a long list of adjectives that describe Mr. Weldon Slayton. He's always willing to listen and advise or just listen. He always gives his honest opinion. Of his many qualities, his greatest is his dedica- tion. He's dedicated to education, but most of all he's dedicated to his students who rely on him to prepare them for their futures. By using computers, he has taken away alot of paper work. Now he stores tests and class plans that can be accessed at the touch of a button. Taking all of this into consideration, the 1984 YAN-TATstaff takes the honor in dedicating the 1984 YAN-TAT to Mr. Weldon Slayton for his total commitment to the school, to his fellow teachers, and to the students. 16 1984 17 S$twieMe mum b f p t m s b ] mum Qeoayne SHmo ct blow a boll ol emun bl [ tuli (role mu i 19 fia vne A nda foo ey 20 £d2)o tna fjau din zrudvn djrui dt, in fJordon Otoynn Aaron u ynn 21 . a ton d hwnlelt f e iMa dfta l x low ?ner (a .( mold c toncl Mon { wry Ityli oax' r 22 Jerry ffiy er £ (ven o yn a nei s faeftAenia fte iAanie jfieffriea SmigU $oAn o n . tstron jfiJinMvn- s fonweMe nAOTt . y{f nn ,tA ,%tny 23 c£ea, {cyn Jt«i dfyiMxynt i 2ft)renda ony m ottna Sfcacey £y nc i Cywn 24 'ey fo iar ea . At the invita- tion of the North Carolina Library Association and as a part of their Biennial conference, 95 students met to form the nchsla. Since 1938, North Carolina school librarians had been planning for the formation of the association, and the details of the organizational meeting were worked out in a school librarians' workshop in the summer of 1947. The NCHSLA was organized for the purposes of increasing pupil interest and participation in school library work, promoting better understanding between local and state high school library clubs, and arousing interest in the study of librainship as a profession. Books are the key to knowledge is the association s motto. The state pin depicts the NCHSLA seal and motto. The Media Club Is a part of the North Central District and is very active in the meetings. They attended the district meeting in Reidsvil- le on November 2 where the president, Melissa Reagan, presided. They are now planning to have a poster sale to raise money for a trip to the state meeting in Wilmington, North Carolina. The Media Center has recently added a video recorder as part of its equipment. This will provide students an opportunity to see pro- grams that are recorded at an earlier date. Many of these programs will not be available for students without the use of the video re- corder. Media Officers Melissa Reagan, President, Tonya Marshall. Vice President, Shar- on Gwynn. Under the sponsorship of Mr. William Wells, the club members learn cheers and sit together at games to augment the cheerleaders and generally express pande- monium at our teams' success, in the past, they were identified by their distinctive T-shirts. Because of various problems, the club has not been as active as in past years, but individual members have tried to attend as many games as possible. The Future Farmers of America, an organization for students en- rolled in vocational agriculture, was organized in 1948. The Local Chap- ter at B.Y. was organized in the 1930's and has been very active. There are a variety of fund raising activities including the sale of candy, fruit, and plants raised in the greenhouse and nursery. The B.Y. FFA chapter is very involved in special events including participation in the National Convention in Kansas City, MO, and in several national contests over the past years. Highlights during the year will include a parent-member banquet and a possible trip to the international Land Judging meet in Oklahoma City. The Chapter has also had its share of offices on both the state and national levels. They have also had students who have had the oppor- tunity to meet with national figures including the President of the United States. Their future plans include many community service projects and the possible participation in the restoration of the old jail in the town of Yanceyville. Advisor- Cv Vernon President. They combine both popular and school spirited music to inspire the players and to get the crowd in a jubilant mood. The directors of the Pep Band are Wanda Barber and Beth Crichton. 67 The Marching Band ordered new uniforms last fall and received them in the spring. Through donations and fund raising projects the band was able to purchase them. Being in the band does not always mean fame and glory. Along with many hours of hard work, practice and preparation of music, they spend many hours raising money to meet our expenses. For fund raising projects, the band has sold suckers, pizzas, doughnuts, and many other products, over the years they have bought instru- ments, uniforms, supplies and many other needed things to keep the band functioning. Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3, 1984, 28 bands from different counties participated in a contest held at the Civic Center. Each band was judged individual- ly and received a rating of 1 through 5. Thanks to the help of the Bartlett Yancey band students, parents, Mr. Amos, Mr. Sawyer, and many other people, the con- test was a great success. MARCHING BAND The Barlett Yancey Marching Band is composed of woodwind, brass, percussion and several auxiliary corps. They have been under the direction of Mr. Ron Amos for five years. Mr. Sawyer, the assistant band director, has been in Caswell County for four years. The Bartlett Yancey March- ing Band won first place in the Reidsville Christmas Parade in No- vember, 1983. They have won the parade for three consecutive years and therefore they have won the Mayors Trophy. This year the band was a showcase as it per- formed as representatives of the school in contests over the East Coast. In April, 1983 they went to Washington, D.c. They entered the Cherry Blossom Festival in a marching contest and placed 4th in the nation. The Bartlett Yancey Band is the pride of Caswell County. There are also different types of music that is studied from Pop music, performed by the Show Choir, to the more classical and contemporary compositions performed by the Chorus ll and Ninth Grade Chorus students. For the many years of working with the Choral Department, director William Wells and the Choral students observed Music in our Schools week . This observance was set aside by the Mu- sic Educators National Conference for the week of March 5-11, 1984. Being proud of this great feat, the Choral Department wore pins that whole week. Besides the wearing of pins, the Choral Department made plans for a special ban- quet that was held at the Caswell County Civic Center on March 8, 1984. At this banquet the Choral Department presented a musical entitled In Search of the Perfect Song, a Musical Journey . Besides teaching and directing, one of the main responsibilities of director William wells is making sure all props are built and ready for choral performances. 70 Chorus Officers L to R: Sharone Coleman, President; Joyce Merritt, Vice- President; Melissa Reagan, Secretary; Angela Cunningham, Treasurer Ladles' Ensemble Row i: (L to R) Vanessa Farmer. Rowland Mr. Robert Fleming A New Administration The 1983-84 school year marks the beginning of an era at Bartlett Yancey High School. Perhaps the most important change has been the appointment of Mr. Floyd Rowland as the new principal, replacing Mr. Ed Meador who had been principal for the past 17 years. Almost as if fate were in- volved, at the same time as a new principal was appointed, Caswell County employed a new superintendent, new sports and revised course outlines were developed at the high school, a new gymnasium was planned, and Atwater Field was augmented by the addition of the new Buccaneer Sta- dium. in the midst of these changes, the Yan-Tat interviewed Mr. Rowland to ascertain his reaction to his new assignment. in 1964, a new graduate named Floyd M. Skippy” Rowland was 18 and had just finished four years of high school, includ- ing driving a bus and playing football. The last thing on his mind was returning to any school, much less Bartlett Yancey High School, as principal. Today he Is concerned with every aspect of Bartlett Yancey in his new position as principal. He looks forward to the development of the school's new facilities, such as the new gym and vocational building, as well as dealing with respon- sibility for creating an effective atmosphere that allows learning and fun. Other goals no 18-year-old would have though of are upgrading the academic curriculum and find- ing new ways to create interest in the curriculum. The high school has brought different problems from the ones he faced as principal at Pelham Elementary School and Dillard Jr. High School. The new conflict areas, he says, arise in maturity and age difficulties, new procedures, and adjusting to the high school environment. For himself, a major adjust- ment Is dealing with the sheer number of hours involved in being a high school principal, especially in attending so many sports events. He likes seeing the students perform however; especially when he is watching those he knew as eighth graders. During his free time he enjoys sports, both as participant and spectator. He especially likes tennis and skiing. He and his wife, Margaret, who is also involved in education, seem to be enjoying the challenge of their new home and Mr. Row- land's new job as principal of Bartlett Yancey. Perhaps the two biggest changes came with the installation of the new principal and the new urgency given to the effort to provide computer education in response to the growing demand by students and parents. While there were many events and changes that made a difference in the new year, these two additions would seem to be the most far-reaching in their effects. Mr. Rowland brought a fresh approach to the campus with a particular emphasis on examining the academic program. After successfully completing the accreditation by the Southern Association under former principal j.e. Meador, Mr. Rowland and the staff look forward to building a brighter future upon that strong foundation. Already the new computers are having their effect. Mr. Rowland has decided to do all scheduling using the computers, and students and teachers are beginning to Jockey for time in computer classes and at the various keyboards. Word processing is beginning to replace typing, and even the Yan-Tatcopy was stored on computer disks. With the potential each has for bringing real change to Bartlett Yancey, it seems only fitting that Mr. Rowland and the computer lead off the special events of 1983-84. Radio Shack's Best Printer The new Model-4's wait for the new computer class to begin. 127 New principal, Mr. Rowland, ponders the challenges of the new job. Frederick Moyer performs for the students. THE HATlOflAL OPERA COMfiTNY COSIBINTUTTE (School For Lovers) MOZART Part of the lobby display during the Shakespeare Festival. 128 The Prince of Denmark was featured at the night performance. Drama and music were part of the special events in 1983 and 84. Music in the form of pianist, Frederick Mover, the National Opera company, and the North Carolina symphony was presented to the student body and to the community at large. The school system and the Arts council cooper- ated in bringing a wide variety of quality perform- ers to the area. Drama was provided by the Shakespeare festival and a fine production of Ten- nessee Williams' Class Menagerie. Frederick Moyer and the National Opera Compa- ny were especially welcome because of the time spent working with small groups and individual _____ students. The opportunity to speak with and learn from these fine professionals was greatly appreciated by the many students who had had no chance to work with real professional musicians before. The dramatic highlight of the year was the Shakespearean Festival. For more than a week students were given opportunities to experience the Bard in many ways. From the exhibits in the Civic Center to an Eliz- abethan banquet, the festival tried to pro- vide for everyone's interest. The finale of the festival came with the performance of Hamlet The students again were excited to be able to learn from the various actors who performed and graciously discussed the many aspects of the acting profession with small groups and individuals. The arts enjoyed a banner year at B.Y. dur- ing 1983-84. We hope that events like these will begin a long tradition of quality enter- tainment to the campus. Actors of This Wooden 0 discuss their profession with the students. In response to the concern over quality education in the state, the General Assembly established the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham as a residential school for academically gifted students from all over the state. The requirements for admission are extremely rigorous and only about 200 of the 800 applicants are accepted. Bartlett Yancey Is very proud to have three of their own as current residents of N.C.S.S.M. Adolphus Gwynn is a senior at the school and plans to graduate this spring. Adolphus was the first Bartlett Yancey student accepted at N.C.S.S.M. and has done well. Of particular note is the fact that he is a member of the student government and has had many responsibilities given to him during his two years of study. Lorrie Apple and Neal Henderson are the latest N.C.S.S.M. students to come from Bartlett Yancey. Both are juniors at the school, and if invited back, will graduate in 1985. The school offers many courses and opportuni- ties that are not available at B.Y. and provides a challenging atmosphere of learning and accomplishment. We hope that these three students will be the first of many from Bartlett Yancey to enjoy these opportunities. Lorrie Apple Adolphus Cwynn Neal Henderson Students begin careers as blood donors to the Red Cross. Juniors anticipate the beginning of their year as seniors with the purchase of class rings. Eighteen year olds begin their adult responsibilities with registration. Beginnings are always a lit- tle frightening as well as ex- citing. Many of the events of 1983-84 were firsts for many students even though the events were not new them- selves. The first time a student gives blood can be a lit- tle scarey. Registra- tion to vote can bring an aware- ness of the approach- ing respon- sibilities of adulthood, but excitement and antic- ipation are the primary emotions for the juniors receiving their class rings as symbols of their im- pending promotion to senior status in the school. Even with all the important and significant events and changes which occurred at Bartlett Yancey during the '83-'84 school year, it may be comforting to remember that the one event that seemed to remain constant was the yard roll . Not only were various residential homes decorated but for the first time in memory, good ole B.Y. herself received the full treatment. Maybe the old adage is right: The more things change, the more they remain the same. 130 SRNIOR STATISTICS writ your m«, co-up-, ! U. IW w,nlf, NAME rnl «ddrt-M b«loi« « if you wert a car - ADOR F.
