Navigation The Mideast deployment was particularly challenging for the Navigation Department The Ouartermasters got their first taste of the task ahead when we piloted the ship into Bermuda at twenty knots and the pace never slowed down from there Operating with fickle electronic gear in a remote part of the world forced the QM Gang to utilize all of their talents and sometimes a little magic to get us to where we wanted to go We first got underway with just the small team of OM2 CLAUSEN OM3 JOHNSON and OM3 HOPKINS but we finished up strong with the addition of OM2 TORRES OMSA FLOEN and SN KEEFE The Personnel men were continually facing the problem of howto transfer someone back to the States from the middle of nowhere Under the direction of PNC BARROW the PN s came up with more numerous and imaginative ways of transporting people than dld Jules Verne In Around the World in Eighty Days We think they all made it but if anyone knows the present whereabouts of PC2 FOURNIER last seen riding off in the USS JOHN HANCOCK s motor whale boat carrying a set of PCS orders to Australia we d appreciate you dropping us a line A special Well Done goes out to PN3 DEBOALT who was recently command advanced to his present rate and was selected as BARRY s Sallor of the Year Also Well Done to PN2 MCGARRIGLE and PN3 WASHINGTON The Yeomen were everything from typewriter reparrmen to radar operators and they still kept the Executive YNSN KAUTZMANN PC2 FOURNIER was the most loved man on board when the mall showed up and the most despised when it didnt He is now on his way to Harold E Holt Naval Communications Station Australia for duty He left a bug pair of shoes to fill but newly reported on board PC3 SMITH appears to be the man to fill them The Hospital Corpsman is one of the most valued men on board any ship and we are very fortunate to have two of the finest Doc Flewell was always there when we needed him Be it for the shots which we didn t want or for the cuts and bulses we all got now and then His assistant HM2 GRIFFIN is proving to be very capable both as a Corpsman and as an aspiring young writer One can t talk about BARRY without mentioning NCC BORROMEO It is due largely to hls efforts that BARRY is on the way to becoming a retention superstar MMCM TOLBERT is the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Command He IS the senior enlisted man a trusted adviser to the Commanding Officer and Executive Officer and the man to whom a crewmember may go with any problem It is a job which requires both big shoes and a big heart as well as someone of the highest professional caliber and we are fortunate to have just that man In Master Chief TOLBERT 11 I I I I T . .
