BARRY was the third ship of the Forrest Sherman class to be built and the fourth ship in fleet history to bear the name of Commodore John BARRY, USN, 11745-18031. ln the years 1956-1966 BARRY took part in many of the significant naval events. BARRY was a member of the task force which landed U.S. Marines in Lebanon in 19585 she participated in the blockade of Cuba during the 1962 Missile Crisis and was a member of the first Atlantic Fleet Destroyer Group to deploy to Vietnam. In 1967 BARRY was placed out of commission to undergo an extensive Antisubmarine Warfare QASWJ modernization at Boston Naval Shipyard. BARRY received an antisubmarine rocket QASROCJ system and expanded communicationsfe- lectronics suite. Significant habitability improvements were also made. BARRY was recommissioned on 19 April 1968. Following a shakedown cruise BARRY became the first ship of the fleet to receive an ANXSOS-35 variable depth sonar in addition to her ANISOS-23 hull mounted sonar. Now the ASW specialist of the fleet, BARRY returned to the Atlantic Fleet and participated in many operations including the task force that deployed to the Mediterranean on short notice during the Jordanian Crisis in September 1970. After regular overhaul in 1972 BARRY changed her home- port from Newport, Rhode Island to Athens, Greece. She took part in numerous Sixth Fleet and NATO operations in connec- tion with the 1973 Middle East War and the 1974 Cyprus Crisis. ln 1975 BARRY was selected as the recipient of the Arleigh Burke Trophy which recognizes the ship or aircraft squadron that has achieved the greatest improvement in bat- tle efficiency. ln August 1975 BARRY underwent regular over- haul in Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Upon completion of the overhaul BARRY changed her homeport to Mayport, Florida. ln September 1977, after successfully completing vigorous refresher training in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba BARRY de- ployed to the Mediterranean for seven months, returning in April 1978. ln August 1978 BARRY deployed for three months to Northern Europe. After returning to the U.S. in November 1978 BARRY began preparations for another Mediterranean cruise. After departing Mayport in March 1979 BARRY spent three months in the Mediterranean as a member of the Battle Group TWO. In June 1979 BARRY transited the Suez Canal and became a member of the U.S. Middle East Force. BARRY conducted operations in support of national interest and se- curity throughout the Red Sea, Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. BARRY returned to the U.S. in September 1979 and in January 1980 commenced a comprehensive overhaul at Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Boston Massachusetts which was completed in March 1981.,Upon completion of the overhaul, BARRY changed her homeport back to Newport, Rhode ls- land after a nine year absence. Post overhaul operations included an interesting assign- ment as escort for USS OHlO's initial sea trial. Following refresher training BARRY deployed on 10 days notice in No- vember 1981 to the Indian Ocean!Persian Gulf with the USS MIDDLE EAST FORCE for 5 months, returning in April 1982. BARRY is 424 feet long with a maximum beam of 45 feet. Fully loaded she displaced over 4000 tons and has navigation- al draft of 22 feet. Four high pressure boilers drive two steam turbine engines and she is capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots. BARRY's armament consists of two 5 inchl54 caliber naval cannons, an ASROC system and two triple tube torpedo mounts. The ship is manned by a crew of 18 officers and 300 men. CAPTAIN MALCOLM W. Since leaving Newport on 10 November, the Engineers have pushed BARRY through some 29 OOO miles of the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and Indian Ocean. BARRY s steam plant has been in continuous operation since leaving home, and her Boiler Technicians and Machinist s Mates have been standing watch without letup since. In addition to getting the ship from Point A to Point B BARRY Engineers have furnished the numerous household services that make the ship into a mobile self contained community BARRY Electricians have generated and distributed all of the electrical power consumed aboard since 9 November - some 2 million kilowatt hours worth. BARRY IC Men have maintained our ship s numerous Interior Communication arteries. BARRY A -Gang personnel have provided hot water for personal use and maintained the ship's many air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The Repair Devision has responded to countless trouble calls from the entire ship. During this cruise many BARRY Engineers achieve significant career milestones. LTJC KAROL, ENS ZIRPS, MMCM TOLBERT and BTCS GUARINO qualified as Engineering Officer of the Watch. LTJG DONOVAN and Surface Warfare Specialists respectively. MM2 DELOGE, MM3 ROBERTS, MM3 SMITH and BT2 TAYLOR, BT2 FAGAN and BTFN MULLEN qualified as Engineroom and Fireroom Topwatches, respectively. BT2 ALESHIRE was slected from among all BARRY crewmembers as Sailor of the Quarter. MM3 DIFFENDERFER was cited for extraordinary services at Commanding Officer's Mast. A special mention must also be made of EN2 DESILVESTER and his team of diesel engine experts - including MM3 SOUTH, MM2 FLINT and ENFN CLOUTIER who tweaked BARRY's motor whale boat engine to a resounding victory in the Great Persian Gulf Motor Whale Boat Race The size and complexity of BARRY s engineering plant mandates a continuous maintenance and repair effort. BARRY Engineers are justly proud of the countless hours of work, worry, and sweat they have expended in keeping BARRY s plant a going concern. The extraordinary degree of teamwork that has evolved is due to the contribution of every BARRY Engineer. The final note Family separation is far from enjoyable and is difficult for both parties involved. Our particular congratulations go out to Mrs BISSELL, Mrs. CRIBBS, Mrs. SLACK and Mrs. BURKE for making their Engineer husbands proud new fathers during this cruise! And most of us have read a book, or heard a lusty tale, About the men who sail these ships, through lightning, wind and hail. But there's a place within each ship, that legend fails to teach. lt's down below the waterline, it takes a living toll - A hot metal living hell, that sailors call the hole . lt houses engines run by steam, that makes the shafts go round, A place of fire and noise and heat, that beats your spirits down. Where boilers like a hellish heart, with blood of angry steam, And of molded gods without remorse, are nightmares in a dream. Whose threat that from the fires roar, is like living doubt, That any minute would with scorn, escape and crush you out. Where turbines scream like tortured souls, alone and lost in hell, As ordered from above somewhere, they answer every bell. The men who keep the fires lit, and make the engines run, Are strangers to the world of light, and rarely see the sun. They have no time for man or God, no tolerance for fear, Their respect pays no living thing, the tribute of a tear. For there's not much that men can do, that these men haven't done, Beneath the decks, deep in the hole, to make the engines run. And every hour of every day, they keep the watch in hell, For if the fires ever fail, their ship's a useless shell. When ships converge to hace a war, upon an angry sea, The men below just grimly smile, at what their fate might be. They're locked in below like men fore doomed, who hear no battle cry lt's well assumed that if they're hit, the men below will die. For every day's a war down there, when the gauges all read red, Twelve hundred pounds of heated steam, can kill you mighty dead. So if you ever write their sons, or try to tell their tale, The very words would make you hear, a fired furnace's wail. And people as a general rule, don't hear of men of steel, So little's heard about the place, that sailors call the hole . But I can sing about this place, and try to make you see, The hardened life of men down there, cause one of them is me. l've seen these sweat soaked hero's fight, in superheated air,, To keep their ship alive and right, though no one' knows they re there And thus they'll fight for ages on, till warships sail no mOre, Amid the boiler's mighty heart, and the turbine's hellish roar. So when you see a ship pull out, to meet a warlike foe, H Remember faintly if you can, THE MEN WHO SAIL BELOW. AUTHOR UNKNOWN 4-+- snuff' I I I , K f M I s s 4 vw- ly' .4 f' ' if f X-, -X ff' . T.:-greg, 1 ' ' -. .:,, 4 P. yr 'f-D: 1 1 Operations The changing tempo of operations between hectic days of Carrier Group Ops and the calm of transit alone was perhaps best felt by the Operations Department. Radio was the one constant of the deployment. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, from before the 10th of November, the BARRY Radio Gang was on watch. During this time BARRY sent out over 3500 messages. The constant background noise of the teletypes never ceased as over 40,000 incoming messages were received. Of particular note were the superb jobs done by RM3 Paul CASPER and RM3 Ronald BANTUM, the teletype repairmen. BARRY operated five months without a significant teletype casually. Be it satellite communications or maintaining a high frequency link with stations as diverse as Guam and Diego Garcia, BARRY Radiomen did it better than anyone else. The radio effort was led by RM1 Harvey SPICER, assisted by RM1 Jim FARRELL and RM1 Gerry WEISS. Special thanks to RM3 Toney CANNIZZARO who handled all outgoing telegrams to our loved ones. ' The Visual Signalling Gang was led by SM1 Henry RIVERS. This group was singled out for praise as the fastest responding signal bridge in the I.O. Battle Group by Rear Admiral Martin, Commander Carrier Group FOUR. SM2 OUICKWELL, SM3 CLANCY, SN ROBINSON and SN BLAISDELL round out BARRY's team of flag, light and semaphore communicators. The Iron men of BARRY's deployment were EW2 Howard SPADER and EW3 Brian HANEHAN who stood port and starboard watches for two and one half months of high intensity operations. BARRY's Electronic Warfare Specialists proved over and over again that they were unsurpassed in signal annalysis. EW2 Chuck MAJOR rounded out the EW Team serving as BARRY's Enlisted Intelligence Assistant and as the operator of BARRY's independent fsmalli TVF station WBRY. BARRY's Electronic Technicians, led by ETC Alan FRID for the first half of the cruise and ET1 Allen MILLS for the second half, kept both the communications equipment and the radars operating throughout the deploy- ment. ET3 Thomas BATTY and ET3 Thomas PACILEO were the keymen in keeping the communications gear on line and ET2 Wayne SUCKOW was the acknowledged radar wizard of BARRY's ET shop. Also leading. the way in watchstanding were the Operations Specialists under OSC Armando RODRIGUEZ. From nights with one contact to hours' with thirty or more the CIC Team kept the bridge informed, talked on radios and checked schedules. Of particular note was the performance of OS3 John ATHERTON on the Naval Gunfire Support Team during Operation Bright Star and OS1 Dave Hegarty who for more than half the cruise ,tg1iSrr!yyHeIo Controller on board. Pine achievements spanned the entire spectrum from- ESWS qualification, and individual goals, to praised profes- sionalism, during BARRY's participation in special operations. I Under the guiding hand of BMCS WILLIAMS, First Division consistently demonstrated the mark of profession. alism. The division successfully completed several underway replenishiments with the Rig Teams lead by BM2 SLOAN, BM3 BARNES, and SN HAVLIN receiving many prases for their seamanship. Every time BARRY joined a group of ships the Captain received compliments on how good she looked, this is due to the leadership of BM3 BOND and BM3 DAVIS and the hard work of men like SN WALDRON, SN MATZUR, SA WINNIE and SN KNOLL. Other divisions that needed cleaning gear or paint could always count on getting what they needed from SN BRUDER in the paint locker or SN KOEN in the cleaning gear locker. One of the high points of the cruise was the Second Annual Persian Gulf Motor Whale Boat Race. Once again BARRY's motor whale boat, Desert Wind , with ENS MARTIN, BM2 SLOAN, SN SUNNELL, and MM3 SOUTH as a crew proved to be the fastest boat on the seas. BM1 HENNESSEY, BM1 SMITH and BM1 KING all became ESWS qualified making First Division to be the first to qualify all CPO's and First Class Petty Officers as ES. Second Division started the cruise off with a successful firing of MT 51 for the first time in two years. This was due mainly to the hard work of GMG2 WALLACE, GMG3 LINN, SN TUTWILER and GMGSN JENSEN and the leadership and expertise of GMGC NIXON. The fire controlmen got their chance to demonstrate their profes- sionalism when the Gunfire Support Team consisting of FTGC SEFFENS, FTG2 SMITH, FTG2 KATSOURIDIS, FTG3 HAGAN and FTG3 GREENWALD participated in Operation Bright Star and received praise for an excellent performance. Many times the ship was at Condition lll and men like GMG1 PAGE, GMG3 CONNIL, FTG2 DECKER and FTG2 FISH stood by their assigned stations ready to defend the ship if needed. FTG1 x1l2UgIg:k2lot:-SZEZESWS qualified and was selected as BARRY's entry for the COM NAVSURFLANT Sailor of Third Division got its first opportunity since overhall to do Anti-Submarine Warfare QASWJ operations with a carrier battle group. From the first l have been continuously impressed and humbled by the dedication, professionalism and heroic achievements of the officers, chief petty officers, and men of BARRY. They have set records and new standards of achievements in many areas, and the innumerable small tasks, functions and routines which must be done perfectly, day In and day out, to build the foundation and structure of a fighting ship, have been done which is a tribute to the outstanding leadership and capability of the petty officers, each of whom has at least a dozen jobs. Your men have, are, and will serve their ship, our Navy, and our Nation in keeping with the very highest traditions of honor and patriotism. BARRY men have succeeded where other failed and performed when others couldn't. They are your husbands, sons, fathers.
