SHIP'S HISTCRY USS BARRY ,,,

Page 9 text:

FROM THE CO: The USS BARRY'S 1979 Mediterranean Middle East deployment was the finest, most challenging and most enjoyable cruise in which I have been privileged to participate. The many superb accomplishments and the fine reputation of the BARRY is testimony of the dedication, professionalism and comradre of the offi- cers and men who were a part of the crew during this deployment. To a man, the officers and crew knew their job, performed it well and took great pride in the fact that they did their jobs well. Preparations for and deployment to the Mediterra- nean was completed in a professional yet routine and well managed fashion. Operations in the U.S. Sixth Fleet reflected that BARRYMEN could operate in any role, under any conditions with U.S. forces and our NATO allies. After two and a half months in the Mediterranean, BARRY was deployed on short no- tice to the Middle East to augment those forces al- ready assigned to that area of harsh environmental conditions and explosive political turmoil. Prepara- tions for this unplanned re-deployment again reflect- ed the can-do professional attitude of the BARRY Crew and the keen state of readiness of the ship. It is especially noteworthy that, although BARRY was the oldest ship in our Battle Group, throughout the de- ployment in both the Med and the Mid-East, BARRY experienced fewer material and equipment problems than any other ship in the Group. This can be attribut- ed directly to the professionalism, sincere dedication and devotion to duty of each BARRYMAN. This cruisebook depicts those BARRYMEN who helped make the cruise an enjoyable, satisfying and successful contribution to our country's defense. It depicts hard work, the long hours and the demanding evolutionsg it reflects the good times, relaxing activi- ties and enjoyable port visits, it recalls our sea time, our liberty time, our work time and our play time. But most of all, it reflects the USS BARRY, her officer's and crew doing what they do best and what no other crew can do better, getting the job done. I hope you will all cherish this cruise book as a momento of your suberb performance and your con- tribution to the security and defense of our country. You can each take pride in the fact that you were a part of the best crew in the United States Navy!
