, ,, .. if The U.S.S. BARRY was launched on I Ocfober I955 aT The BaTh Iron Works, BaTh, Maine. Mrs. Erancis Rogers, greaT grand- niece of The ship's namesake, acTed as sponsor. The ship was commissioned on 7 SepTember I956 aT BosTon, MassachuseTTs as one of The EorresT Sherman IDD-93lj class. The Third ship To be named BARRY, The IDD-933D is equipped wiTh modern conven- Tional armamenT and has much greaTer firepower Than any previous class of desTroyers. The messing and berfhing spaces are air- condiTioned. BARRY's dimensions are: overall IengTh 4211 feeT, egxgbirqe Sbeam 45 feeT, drafT 20 feeT, and load displacemenf , on . BARRY's firsT cruise in I956 afTer shakedown Training Took her Through The Panama Canal and down The wesTern coasT of SouTh America. In The busy years since Then her operaTing schedule has Taken her To MediTerranean and NorThern European waTers Three Times, several Times To The Caribbean and once To The WesTern Pacific on a world cruise. In The summer of l958, while operaTing wiTh The SixTh EIeeT, BARRY parTicipaTed in The U.S. landings in Lebanon, receiving visiTs aT sea from The SecreTary of The Navy and Commander SixTh Eleef. I-Ier firsT regular shipyard overhaul commenced aT BosTon in OcTober of I958 and was compleTed in March of I959. During This lengrhy overhaul a major alTeraTion To The ship's bow was accomplished for The insTaIIaTion of a new bow-mounTed sonar dome. This was The proToType model of The SQS-23 sonar. Sub- sequenT TesTs, Trials and evaluaTions aboard BARRY were To demonsTraTe The reIiabiIiTy and effecTiveness of The SQS-23 sonar for laTer fIeeT-wide insTallaTion. AfTer a second shipyard avail- abiIiTy during The summer of I96l, BARRY began a vigorous period of acTiviTy including refresher Training aT Guanfanamo Bay and I-lunTer-Killer Group ASW exercises. In The summer of l962 BARRY deployed To The MediTerranean. ShorTIy afTer her reTurn To The WesTern ATlanTic area, BARRY was called upon To parTic- ipaTe in The ' 'quaranTine" of Cuba. During The summer monThs of 1963 BARRY visiTed I-Ialifax, Bermuda and New York as parT of The annual Midshipmen Training program. She was a key figure in The exTensive Torpedo per- formance evaIuaTion in GcTober I963. Early in I964 BARRY won a commendaTion for her prompT reacTion and heroic efforTs while fighTing a fire aboard The U.S.S. ANTARES TAKS-335. In The fall of I9o1l BARRY again deployed To European waTers in company wiTh oTher DesTroyer Squadron 211 ships and The carrier WASP CCVS-183. She was now squadron flagship. During The de- pIoymenT BARRY operaTed for a Time wiTh NATO forces in The Norwegian Sea, crossing The ArcTic Circle on QI SepTember 196-41. Proceeding souTh To The Mediferraneari, BARRY visiTed Valencia, Spain, Palma de Mallorca, Marseilles and Toulon, Erance and Naples, lTaly, before refurning To The STaTes in Time for The ChrisT- mas holidays. A busy spring schedule followed, wiTh The ship spending February and March of I965 in The Caribbean for annual spring Training exercises. In June BARRY Gcfed as assisTanT recovery ship for The Gemini Eour space shoT. IT was a mosT memorable experience for all hands. The summer of I965 was highlighred wiTh The awarding of The Squadron BaTTIe Efficiency ' ' E" To BARRY as a symbol of her operaTionaI and professional compeTance parTicularly in The field of ASW. In mid-AugusT, The officers and men of BARRY IGGrned ThaT The ship was soon To deploy To The Wesfern Pacific in supporT of The VieTnam War. AfTer vigorous preparaTion, BARRY and five oTher desTroyers of DesTroyer Squadron 211 deparTed NewporT on 29 SepTember on whaT was To become a world cruise. Eor The second Time since her commissioning she passed Through The Panama Canal.STeaming wesT across The Pacific, BARRY sTopped aT Islawaii, Midway and Japan before ioining up wiTh The SevenTh I:leeT in The SouTh China Sea. In nearly four monThs on sTaTion, BARRY parTicipaTed in air-sTrike operaTions wiTh The nuclear powered aTTack carrier U.S.S. ENTERPRISE ICVACNI-65D againsT NorTh VieTnam, fired shore bombardmenT missions in The MeKong DelTa and supporTed Marine Troops ashore on OperaTion Double Eagle in Quang Ngai Province. She was a member of The historic ENTERPRISE Task Group 77.7 when The firsT combaT sorTies were flown from a nuclear powered ship on 'Q December I965. The squadron reioined laTe in Eebruary I966 for The reTurn TransiT To The UniTed STaTes via The Indian Ocean and The Suez Canal. Dipping souTh, BARRY crossed The EquaTor on 27 Eebru- ary I966 enrouTe To Penang, Malaysia and Cochin, India. BARRY compleTed her circumnavigaTion of The world upon reTurn To New- porT in early April I966, following a fourTh passage of The MediTerranean Sea. CurrenTI BARRY is commanded by Commander O D Tiderman U.S. Navyyand is The flagship for CapTain C.A. Sander, Navy,l Commander DesTroyer Squadron 211.
