H.S. saw its largest en- rollment of 173 seniors, 226 juniors, 253 sopho- mores, and 253 fresh- men. We had realized be- fore the school year be- gan that we would be crowded, and during the year we felt the pinch in our lockers . . . ! in the classrooms and in the lunch lines . . . while Dr. Wright and Mr. Gillis checked over plans for the proposed new addition already underway. Following the academic day, our activity hour enabled us to use our varied skills to plan for dramatic, music, and dance productions, publica- tions, athletic events, and class activities, or to pursue our own individual interests. gi wiiw .Ewa T 'kk', 1 L, . How about the terrific Homecoming we had this year? All these things were the re- sult of a year's work of the Stu- dent Council, this year headed by Randy Sparling, presidentg Sue Vaughn, vice-president: Nancy Weckler, secretary: and Bruce Condill, treasurer. Among other major projects is the annual sponsoring of an A.F.S. student, this year Luis Gamir from Madrid, Spain, pic- tured at left with A.F.S. officers and Mr. Hylander, advisor. Additional projects included a new school Hag of red and white. the intramural program and the variety show, plus considerable work on revising and making additions to the constitution. J f yr, , . . In the fall of this year, the Masque and Wig and the B.H.S. music department worked together to present Call Me Madam by Irving Berlin, the story of a United States woman ambassador to Lichtenberg. Pam Quayle and Van Bussmann, pic- tured at right, held two of the lead parts. In February, the Masque and Wig with a cast of juniors and seniors, presented J. M. Barrie's The Admirable Crichton as the annual junior-senior class play.-Lower right. Crichton, the butler, played by Bob Hawley, saves the family he is with when they are stranded on an island during a trip. Bill Green took the part of the Earl of Loam, the head of the family. I9 The number of times the Orchestra has supplied us with listening pleasure indi- cates a great number of rehearsals and good, hard work. Round, circle, and square dances, with Mr. Chiles do- ing most of the calling keeps everyone on their toes while social dancing, again the largest activity in the school, gives students a chance to brush up on their fox trots, jitterbugging, and other pop- ular dances. Science Club covers current discover- ies in the various scientific fields while Natural History Club carries out proj- ects not covered in the classroom. Members of the Space Club Cleftj study the theory and design of missiles, rockets and satellites, also building working models. Who knows, maybe someday during eighth hour we'll hear thatfami1iar...5...4...3...2 ...1...BLASTOFF! SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS FOR A NUCLEAR AGE That's what I like about math courses--no homework! Math classes-at B.H.S. covered courses in algebra, ge- ometry, and trigonometry, and were supplemented by the special math courses offered by the University of Illinois, guaranteed to keep students on their toes. The Slide Rule Club is an extra-curricular activity in the Field of math where interested math students learn how to perform operations on the slide rule and study some of the things going on in contemporary mathematics. ,, -- --,-- My , ,, , our ideas. .ZS 'R- sum... The one activity at B.H.S. which probably takes the most concentration is the Reading Development Club. The purpose of this club, which meets twice a week, is to develop the reading skills of the members enabling them to read faster and with more comprehen- sion. Several different reading develop- ment aids are used to carry out this purpose. C 1? It 'Q 'C it ff as . . . taught us how to communicate lub U in 4. Greek and Italian Clubs are more academic, since they involve the study of languages which are not offered for regular credit. French and Spanish Clubs are primarily concerned with learning more about the culture of France and Spain . . . and the cuisine of France seems to play an important part in some of their soirees . . . hmm? As the year goes on, how- ever, these typimy and primting students End they really aren't as unco-ordinated as they thought they were. Then at the end of a year of hard work, the typing and printing students are able to display a mastery of the typewriter and printing press. Being able to type proves to be quite an asset for these kids, as they can type their term papers and extra long assignments. The more advanced typing students can use their skill in office practice. Printing classes are kept busy doing posters, school forms, including those good old report cards, and other printed material. . . .and learned to Work with them. -an-ni 1715 A .W ,I f I Putting out a school newspaper is harder than most people realize. The students above have worked hard all year to keep us posted on the latest school events, such as the Karousing Kid, the Wishing Well, Thought for the Week, Brief Biogs, and others. Proof of the popularity of the BRONCHO is easily seen in the eagerness with which stu- dents reach for their BRONCHO every Friday afternoon. Publications kept us posted on school events . . P- Well, you finally got your Corral, and good or bad it's the result of these people's efforts who have been working away vacations and after school under the tyrannical whip of Mr. jones since a year ago when the book was started: Clay Timon, A. K. Schunk, Ruth Kerman, Kay Oman, Dottie Anderson, Pam Quayle, Diane Livingston, and Dottie Lattof. While activities allowed us to fur- ther our interests. 'nu--- 'iw X :iff Because B.H.S. is fortunate in having a long list of extra-curricular activities, stu- dents here have the opportunity to round out their education. All our activities could not possibly be pictured on these pages. Among these are Record Club, Chess Club, Travel Club. Sports History Club, Camera Club, Future Nurses, Future Teachers, R.T.D.C. and D.S., and Electronics Club, all of which contribute a great deal to the success of Barrington's activity program. -Y H F' r I Q W Q -.Z Nxt M ,.?5,1w Ab, , x V t iw awfxggg .N AL , , . , . -ws K I I ' 4 A fl. ,MTW Q, ' . 1 - ,I MEM. :'f'f'W X' hymn x N., ye I-V i ,UV fffwf' -f sf s swffkh --0 1 'i'!?? z M, f - x, ' . -V, W, ,, if ,, . Spring sports in '58 saw the golf team, tops in the conference, take a fifth in the state, while the baseball team tied for first. The Broncho trackmen, playing host to the conference meet in May, placed a strong third. Fall sports got underway with an equally strong start with the football team placing second in the conference, dropping their only game to Liberty- ville. Fall of 1958 also saw cross country added to the growing list of sports at Barrington High. With winter coming on sports moved indoors with basketball and wrestling teams sharing the spotlight. 37 VARSITY FOOTBALL Seated-T. Johnson, B. Rogers, T. Riggs, P. Lahti, C. Schaller, R. Reetz, J.
