NAYATT SCHOOL l falm 'w :y,,, PROC RE55 dau Wcblwzq 7TH GRADE-The class of 1956 first assembled as a group in the fall of 1950, when we entered L.R. Peck High School as seventh graders. Wewere assigned to the home rooms 'of Mrs. Speakman, Mr. Williamson, and Mr. Reid. Needless to say, the system of changing rooms and teachers, for each class, in- trigued us all. Classes in crafts taught by Miss lsherwood, art, under the direction, of Mrs. Burns, and manual training, with Mr. Williamson as instructor, furnished us with many enjoyable experiences which will surely be recalled in future years. Our teachers little realized what a unique class this was to become. 8TH GRADE-In the eighth, our presence was enioyed by the following homeroom teachers: Miss lsherwood, Mr. Barrett, and Mr. Biber. This year, because of double sessions, we were for- tunate enough to attend school during the morning, leaving us long, carefree afternoons. The scholastic highlight of the year was the United Nations debate, which was held under the supervision of Mr. Biber. The regular Friday evening canteen offered many of us our first opportunity to display our social interests. 9TH GRADE-We entered the new Barrington High School build- ing as freshmen with a spirit of eagerness, determined to make the most of our high school career and, therefore, to look at things a little more seriously. This sentiment was little realized by Miss Walch, Miss Baker, and Mr. Pinsky, and Miss Gibbs, our homeroom teachers. Members of the faculty were aghast when a missing quantity of copper sulfate turned up in the new aquarium dissolved along with several very dead fish. We all looked forward to the prestige we would gain by holding our first class meeting. The class officers chosen at this meeting were: Richard Butler, President, Ted O'Halloran, Vice President, Ruth Shaw, Secretary, Nancy Ryder, Treasurer, and Judy Fine, Chairman of the Social Committee. Mr. Pinsky, the new social studies teacher, was selected to be our class advisor. Our major social event of the year, the Freshman Class Party, was enioyed by all who attended. It was during this year that several of our boys began to show outstanding athletic ability, while many of the girls took an active part in the functions of the B.G.A.A. 10TH GRADE-We had firmly established ourselves as stalwart B.H.S. students when we returned as sophomores in September of 1953 and greeted our homeroom teachers, Miss Gibbs, Miss Baker, and Mr. Pinsky. We chose the following officers to guide us through the year: Don Minot, President, Richard Butler, Vice President, Sally Wood, Secretary, Joan Knox, Treasurer, and Doris Estep, Social Committee Chairman. 43

Miss Barton took over the responsibilities of being our class advisor when Mr. Pinsky left to take a position in Connecticut. Mr. MacGregor, a newcomer to the faculty ranks, soon realized the extent of his new biology class' enthusiasm, when, one morning, he opened his door to discover a cherry tree blossom- ing forth from the sink, and threatening to grow through the ceiling. llTH GRADE-Now, as juniors under Miss Barton's influence, we began to realize the seriousness of preparing for the life ahead of us. We spent the year in the homerooms of Miss Bar- ton, Miss Baker, and Mr. Barrett. Led by our class officers, Rich- ard Butler, President, Bud Anderson, Vice President, Sally Wood, Secretary, Joan Knox, Treasurer, and Doris Estep, Chair- man of the Social Committee, we made our mark both scholasti- cally and socially. Members of the class took an active part in school affairs including student council, drama club, and varsity sports. The novel Under-Water Fantasy theme will long be re- membered by those who attended our Junior Prom. Our re- designed class rings arrived early in the year. 12TH GRADE-Now, as full-fledged seniors, we found ourselves in the homerooms of Miss Walch, Miss Barton, and Mrs. Hatha- way. We soon became aware of our responsibility to ourselves and our school. Nick Calitri was elected School President and our officers for the year were Richard Butler, President, Bud Anderson, Vice President, Sally Wood, Secretary, Joan Knox, Treasurer, and Doris Estep, Chairman of the Social Committee. Members of our class were instrumental in purchasing a high- fidelity sound system for use at school functions and a camera for the use of the ARROW staff. This year we also supplied the varsity teams with the maiority of their starting players. The acting ability of several of our classmates was displayed when we presented our senior class play, Nothing But the Truth. At our Christmas Formal, a shimmering Christmas tree was the awe-inspiring center of attraction. Later in the year a good per- centage of our numbers gained the distinction of being elected to the Rhode Island Honor Society. At our senior banquet, we took the opportunity to express our gratitude to the faculty for their invaluable help, concern, and guidance. Our senior ball, rounding out scores of long to be remembered events which have taken place during our four years as classmates, left us with the hope that the future might be as kind and care- free as were our days at B.H.S.
