AM Wm M121-S The USS BARNEY gets her name from a man who helped set the standards of American naval tradition. Joshua Barney assumed his first command when he was only fifteen years old He had several commands during the Revolution and after the war served as Commodore in the French Navy for six years When the War of 1812 began he returned to the United States to defend his country On one occasion he led his sailors and marines ashore at Bladensburg and formed the bulwark of the American defense against the British land invasion USS BARNEY QDDG-61 is the third ship to be named in honor of Commodore Joshua Barney She was one of the first ships designed from keel up as a guided missile destroyer. The New York Shipbuilding Cor- poration in Camden New Jersey laid the keel on 18 December 1959 and less than one year later 10 December 1960 she was christened by her sponsor Mrs Harry Wortman On 11 August 1962 the com mlssioning pennant was broken In appropriate ceremonies in Philadelphia USS BARNEY is a fast highly maneuverable destroyer Her automatic combustion control power plant is one of the newest to be installed in destroyers enabling her to carry out any task assigned her with great speed and mobility Her anti-air warfare and anti-submarine capabilities are infinitely greater than those previous classes of destroyers The Tartar guided missile weapons system Asroc torpedoes and a 5-inch 54 caliber dual-purpose gun battery coupled with the most modern communications and electronics b ena Ie her to detect track and deliver rapid salvos of missiles and projectiles against enemy targetS whether on land sea under the sea or in the air
