This force operates as one unit, bound by the common purpose of serving as NATO's maritime spearhead in preserving the free access to North Atlantic waters. STANAVFORLANT is composed of between four and nine destroyer or frigate type ships, operating as one unit on a continuous basis. Ships of various nationalities will normally remain with the squadron for a period of up to six months. They are then relieved by a unit of the same nationality or a vessel from another NATO naval member. Commanding the squadron is a commodore who is selected annually from one of the countries contributing ships to the force. The commodore is aided by a staff of officers who are also provided by participating countries. Overall command of STANAVFORLANT is exercised by the Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic from Norfolk, Virginia. The Commander in Chief, Eastern Atlantic Area, with headquarters at Northwood, England, controls the force when operating in European waters. ROYAL NETHERLANDS COMMODGRE J. W. H. WEVER NAVY Commodore Wevers began his naval career as Signalman 3rd Class voluntary reserve on 23 May 1945. Holland had just been liberated but the war continued in the Far East. After his primary military training in the United Kingdom, he was sent to the Netherlands Naval Of- ficers Training College in the United Kingdom, at Enys House near Falmouth in Cornwall. On 1 April 1946 he was commissioned. After various assignments in the Netherlands and Great Britain he went to the Dutch East Indies for three years of duty, first as Commanding Officer of a patrol vessel, later on the staff of the Admiral Netherlands, Dutch Indies. Back in Holland Commodore Wevers was given the command of a minesweeper, served as gunnery officer on several ships, followed a weapon technique course at the University in Delft and a guided missile course at the college of aeronautics at Carnfield in Great Britain. His next assignment was the cruiser HNLMS DE ZEVEN PROVINCIEN, where he served as weapons officer after the cruiser was fitted out with the Terrier guided missile system. In 1966 Commodore Wevers followed the staff course at the Floyal Naval Staff College in Greenwich and after that he was given the command of the destroyer HNLMS ZEELAND, which was a part of the Standing Naval Force Atlantic. After this command the Commodore was ap- pointed director ofthe Centre for Automation of Weapon and Command Systems of the Ministry of Defense. Prior to assuming command of the Standing Naval Force Atlantic, Commodore Wevers served as 'Commanding,Officer of the Dutch cruiser HNLMS DE RUYTER. Commodore Wevers is married, and has two sons. The Commodore and his family reside in The Hague. ITH UTHER IE M4 1, E gl ? if ,-xx f ? 5 r ' A X , X , we 4 '3'5 Q A mx Z ,l ,. , - X K .HQ A K 5 1 Q ' K 5 J : ::, -f :Q f W - , I , Wfffmsvw?
