The name Barney has been a part of our Navy since before the Revolutionary War. Then it was Barney, the man, not one of the three ships later named in his honor. Joshua Barney was quite a man. When he was only 15 years old, he assumed his first command while en- route to the Mediterranean. He had several commands during the Revolution and after that war served as a Commodore in the French Navy for six years. It was during the War of 1812, however, that Joshua Barney left his mark in naval history. He led his sailors and marines ashore at Bladensburg and formed the bulwark of the American defense against the British land invasion. In size, from the little Torpedo Boat 25, to DD-149 to DDG-6 of today, Barney has grown by leaps and bounds, much like a healthy lad. The third USS BAR- NEY is almost three times as long as its Torpedo Boat grandfather, and boasts a beam over two-and-a- half times as great. The displacement tonnage is 27 times larger. Today's BARNEY requires about 340 officers and men to operate her, as opposed to its 1919 destroyer dad's 101, and the 1900 grand- dad's 29. A, f-Nw I l 4-A
