0! Illll ! THE LATRATOR i I 0 CLASS HISTORY GRANDMA'S DIARY OF 1930 SCENE-Living room of the tell tale home, some evening in 1990. Enter Kitty-fPlaying mouth organ. Looks around. Sits on sofa and keeps playing.J Enter Ethelyn-Aw, don't do that! Gee, with Ma gone down to this here graduation of sister's, it's so quiet and still. I can't find anything to do. Kitty-fPlays againj. Ethelyn-fBegins to look through big book in pile on floorl. Say, Kitty, here's a picture of grandma-an' I'll bet she didn't have to go to some old school in the daytime and then stay at home alone nights so her sister could get graduated. Kitty-fPulls book onto her lap, both look 3 she reads from bookl- September 5, 1926, gee, but that's a long time ago, Why that must have been when grandma was only a girl. Gee, diaries sure do go back a long ways, don't they? Ethelyn-Oh, yes! I've got one that's all of three years old myself. fSilence while Kitty reads intentively.J Kityt-Why, Ethel, this tells about when grandma went to school. Do you really suppose they had school that far back? Just listen to what it says: This morning when I got there I started to go in the front door but a fellow called Del Wass stopped me and said that if I didn't go around to the side door, he would send me to a place called Prof. So kind of meek like I went around to the side door. Ethelyn fpointing to opposite pagej-Oh, that must be a picture of that high school. Kitty-When, I got in they sent me up to Study Hall away up on the top floor. Over in one corner was a bashful little boy with a depressed look on his face, who was too scairt to talk. This was Johnny Watson. Across from him sat a pale-faced youngster, glaring -at Johnny. They called him Hall, not study hall, but Charles Hall. A chubby little girl was sitting ,down in the front seat, thinking awful hard, about a little boy in West Somerset, I guess. This was Vera Hall. Across from her sat a girl who they said was awful green, but I didn't see anything green about her. Her hair was awfully red. Mildred Newman was her name. In walked a freckled, little, girl whose feet seemed to say, You let me by this time, and P11 let you by next. Thisvwas Doris Rosseau. I heard some noise and who should come stumbling in, disturbing every boy, but Loraine Brownell, who as she jazzed down the aisle, flirted right and left. I guess she was getting ready for an oratorical contest. I didn't pay so much attention to her because I saw Ella Watts crying hysteri- cally. The poor little girl was so shy and timid. A lull passed over the Study Hall and a short, fat person entered who said she was Jeannette McAdam, and wanted to be dictator of all the classes as she knew how. A paper Wad missed my ear and I looked back to see who threw it and I saw a brightly painted girl with a guilty look. This they said was Eunice Blood. I jumped, for a little bell hid up over the door, so nobody would find it I guess, well just as the bell rang, and just as that big man called Prof came in, a couple more girls hurried in and took a seat. I guess they were late be- cause they had to walk all the way down from Barker. They didn't seem scairt at all. They knew the ropes, they said. But when Prof said, Doro- thy Conlin and K. Ryan, either you straighten up or go tothe office, gee, you could of heard a pin drop. Pretty soon a long, lanky girl. got up and put Page Fourteen
