BSSN Awards Diplomas to Fifty-Eight On December 21, 1978, the first class of the Baptist System School of Nursing held their commencement exercises at First Baptist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. John Gilbreath, Executive Director of the Baptist Medical System welcomed the fifty-eight graduating seniors. Orman Simmons, M.D. presented a message to the graduating class and Maxine Otey, R.N., President of the Arkansas State Board of Nursing was present to deliver the Commencement Address. Following tradition, the graduates recited the Nightengale Pledge led by Ann Hall, R.N., Co-chairman of Level III. The graduates received their diplomas and a handshake of congratulations from Rev. R. H. Dorris, Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Baptist Medical Center. Shirlene Harris, R.N., Director of BSSN, and Patricia Cook, R.N., Chairman of Level II, presented the graduating students with their pins. The ceremony was a beautiful way for the fifty-eight gradu- ates to begin their well-earned and deserved profession. For two years and five months they utilized every second of their spare time studying in order that they could reach their goal of sitting together for one last timeg dressed in the white uni- form that honors their new profession. 128 W
