from an ending . . . TOA BE GINNIN ln l96X. the Arkansas Baptist School of Nursing closed its doors. 'llte diploma program became a thing ol' the past. Nflany believed that closing the diploma programs brought about a decline in the quality of nursing care given to patients as well as contributing to the acute shortage of nurses in Arkansas. Through the efforts ol' many. the diploma program re-opened in August of I976. The leader was the Baptist System: the school was the Baptist System School of Nursing. 'lo have a school. one must have a building. classrooms. laboratories. etc. With reconstruction of yy hat was patient rooms. offices. Central Supply and other areas ol' Central Baptist Hospital. empty rooms were turned into noisy crow ded classrooms, Many people worked: and in August. it was ready: 'llte Baptist System School ol'NLlt'sil1g.

The students of the Baptist System School of Nursing proudly dedicate the school's first yearbook to Mrs. Shirlene Harris. Because of her efforts and dedication to nursing and to the belief that education is the key to the quality of patient care. our dreams have become a reality. As the late Robert F. Kennedy once said. Some men see things as they are and ask why: I dream things that never were and ask why not. So it was with Mrs. Harris. she too had a dream and said why not. We are proud to have been a part of that dream.
